Outlook Express problem
by Guest Jeff- 7 replies
I have a problem with my Outlook Express not being able to open my *.dbx files. I noticed one day when I started OE that my personal folders were gone, and that my inbox was empty. I knew that I did not delete them, so I closed OE and navigated to the store folder where the messages are kept. Inside, I found two copies of each folder: inbox.dbx and inbox (1).dbx, outbox.dbx and outbox (1).dbx, sent items.dbx and sent items (1).dbx, etc. etc. OE appears to be using the files with the (1) extension. The original ..dbx files show a signifigant size to them when I look at their properties, but they will not open. I have tried deleting the (1) files, but…

Windows XP could not start ... File missing or corrupt
by Guest Alberto- 7 replies
This will be the second time in 2 months that this problem happened on my eMachines T3504 running XP Home. The file that is missing or corrupt is \Windows\systems32\config\system I used the OEM restore disk last time, and it was such a hassle to get back to working shape with email and the profiles and all that. I have read quite a few posts here, and have tried many of the steps, but one of the most frequent answers deals with copying files from a *repair* directory while in the Recovery Console. Well, once I was in the RC I looked for the Repair directory and it can't be found. I have tried chkdsk /r, but that didn't work. Is it possible the file I need …

After lightning strike, built new machine, then booted old C:\ drive from damaged computer. Now I'm repairing the damaged machine. I have a disk image I would like to restore to this repaired machine. Since I am running this WinXP OS on the new, can I purchase a new WinXP disk and use the repair function to enable this old disk for the repaired computer? Thank you John PS: After reading the thread in this most excellent newsgroup, (If the motherboard is changed), I think I have my answer. It will be no big deal if it doesn't work, need to install OS anyhow, just would be nice ,I have lots of favorite things on the old disk. Heh, one of the things is S…

I have a computer with XP Home. It was infected by a virus (despite having the McAfee Security suite). I have replaced the McAfee with Kaspersky and successfully removed the virus. However, my Control Panel icon has disappeared and whenever I try to access Add/Remove Programs from other menus I get the error Operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. I am also unable to access Properties on My Computer and Windows Update fails. I can access Regedit. Ihave already checked the Policy section of the registry and cannot find anything amiss. (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsof…

'Device Wizard' popping up after booting.
by Guest paullie- 3 replies
The other day I tried installing an HP printer and ran into a world of trouble that ended with the system freezing, the printer stuck 'on' and indicating an error state, and requiring me to kill main AC power to end and shutdown. After re-boot, I completely uninstalled the HP drivers and all associated folders/files. The problem is that the HP installation apparently added a Windows Hardware Driver wizard and an associated toolbar popup that says "new hardware found" to the registry, and they both appear everytime I boot. VERY annoying. There is no new hardware. As a system driver check indicates, only the hardware and drivers that I know about present…

'Windows - No Disk' err.msg on startup
by Guest Pitgull- 3 replies

I'm not scanning anything, I'm just starting up. I have to hit cancel again and again - about 5 times - before this message goes away and the startup can continue. This happens on every startup. The body of the message is: Exception Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bf9c 4 75b6bf9c 75b6bf9c The only thing new is that I installed a new printer (Kodak easyshare 5300 all in one - the installation was hellish) about a month ago but I can't be sure if it's connected - I also renewed my antivirus protection and bought a couple of games recently. I also have a couple of very annoying automatic updates that I can't seem to shut down and set to manua…

Can't change time zone
by Guest Kathy- 8 replies

Somehow all my XP machines have changed their time zones to Mexico time. When I try to change them, only Mexico and South American time zones are shown in the dropdown list and no map is displayed. The time zone was originally set to US/Canada Central time, but was mysteriously changed. How can I set to that zone? How can I fix this problem? I only noticed this today because my PCs weren't updated for DST. The DST update was installed last year. Thanks.

by Guest Levlg- 1 reply

I have a computer under Vista. The Windows Media Player does not play back mp3 files, downloaded from the Internet. The progress bar is moving, time is running, but there is no sound! But mp3 files, which were put in the system during installation (samples), are playing back normally. And another player on the computer is playing ALL mp3 files. At the same time ALL mp3 files from the computer played through home network on another computer (under WinXP) fine. Why does this happen? How can I fix this? Thank you Lev

Las ventanas se cierran
by Guest ritagoldberg@stlawu.edu- 4 replies

English XP Pro with Chinese software in Chinese?
by Guest Lenard- 2 replies

My friend wants to use my old XP pc in their language but my old pc is English XP. They would like to install chinese office and other naitve chinese software for their use onto that machine. Possible without any conflicts? So, using WinXP Pro English version with the regional settings & IME set to chinese, this will display everything in chinese on the desktop and webpages presumably? How about if they install native chinese software to this system also? What about windows update, will it update English and Chinese software - if genuine of course? Any drawbacks except, it is not readable being a foreign language?? Kinda need an answer quick…
