Computer freezes at Windows logo screen
by Guest yaro137@googlemail.com- 3 replies
- 106 views
I tried swapping almost every component except for the CPU and motherboard with all the nonessential disconnected. It behaves very strange to start with. I can get the system running in Safe Mode. Also I can get to Last Known Good Configuration. However as only I try to start the system normally it freezes at the Windows logo. BTW I had a lot of problems with the keyboard which not always catches up although it was taken from another PC where it worked fine. There is nothing in the Event logs and scandisk doesn't find anything either. Hitting ESC at Windows logo does nothing. Any help or ideas? Thanks yaro

Hard drive with 2 drive letters.
by Guest Ka1oxd- 12 replies
I am having a problem with my Windows XP. I have one single partion and one drive. When I start up the recovery console, and type MAP the hard drive comes back as drive c: and device\harddisk0\partition1 which is correct. If I go into Windows, bring up windows explorer, I have both drive c & d. It seems that for some reason, it is assigning the one physical partition as both c & d and the OS keeps assigning the %SystemRoot% to d:\windows\system32. I have tried using fixmbr, fixboot, and other items. nothing gets rid of the ghost drive that does not phsyically exist. anyone got any ideas?

Opening or saving files causes HANG on newly installed XP
by Guest Gareth- 2 replies
I recently re-installed while using 'complete format' windows xp pro eng and my computer. One of the reasons I re-installed was that whenever I used the standard file dialog box to save or open a file and try to navigate to other than the default folder, it would often hang with 'not responding' in the window caption. Eventually, I would get to the required folder. The problem returned after all my applications were installed. The problem is extremely annoying and a friend with similar applications installed has exactly the same problem. 'Total Commander' has no problem navigating the file system. Presumably it uses other modules to perform the naviga…

IP Address 0.0.0.0
by Guest Michelle- 3 replies
I recently had to restore factory defaults for a home computer (Windows XP Home Edition). Now, my IP address only reads 0.0.0.0 I have tried several things including ipconfig, ipconfig renew, changing Networking Settings, re-installing router software, etc. I have tried searching the Microsoft Knowledge base....found some articles, but none seemed to fix the problem. Linksys has even tried to fix my problem (through their online Networking tools.....) I can't ping it, because there is no IP address. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would appreciate any help! Thanks! Michelle

Network connection limits w/ XP Pro
by Guest bru- 3 replies

I have a network with a few systems (mix of XP/Pro, XP/Home 2000/Pro) without a domain server. On Friday I configured one of the XP/Pro (#1) with a shared folder and one of the 2000/Pro (#2) with a shared folder. On a 3rd computer (#3) (an XP/Pro), I had configured two network drives to the two shared folders. However, today, the XP/Pro network drive did not connect. When I tried to recreate it I get the error: <Workgroup> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.... No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as the computer can…

Poor audio perfromnace on playback
by Guest X-Eyed_Bear- 3 replies
Can I get some advice on where to look for the cause of this problem, please? Playback of recorded music (irrespective of format) is frequently poor on my system. As soon as I do anything (for example open a web-page) the playback of recorded audio is interrupted. If the application I start requires more than minimal CPU - for example opening a large image in Photoshop - the playback either stops completely or is broken up into a stream of sub-second 'bleeps'. I have an Asus A8V mobo, with Athlon 3700+ CPU, 2 Gb of dual channel mmeory, 2 fast SATA disks, a fast Matrox display card and a Creative Audigy card. I'm sure there is enough compute power he…

Yes ,all the program shortcuts on my desktop/start menu are not working. For some strange reason Firefox is working! It seems the main reason why i am having this problem is that for some unknown reason the Program Files folder has disepeared from dics C!! Windows Explorer context menu problem
by Guest Steve Barnett- 2 replies
If I right click on an HTML file in windows explorer, the context menu pops up and includes a bunch of options for editing the file, such as Edit with Dreamweaver, Edit with WeBuilder and a couple of others. If I click one of these options, the relevant application is started and the file loaded. However, if I select two or more HTML files and right click, while the same menu appears, selecting one of the edit menu options does nothing. The hour glass appears for a few seconds and then reverts to the pointer. No application starts and none of the files are opened. Does anyone know why this should be and how I can get the files opened? I'm on Windows/XP…

Ctrl + Shift gives an annoying alignment
by Guest d99alu@efd.lth.se- 2 replies
Hi! When editing text in almost any MS editors (Notepad, Word, address bar of IE, ...), the key combination Ctrl+Shift changes the alignment of the text and adjust the text for languages writing from right to left. (Arrow keys work in opposite direction, Delete deletes the character to the left of the marker, typing types to the left etc.) This is very annoying, I use Ctrl Shift often with other keys for marking entire words etc, and when changing your mind, missing a key etc the text flips like this. (This is not the key combination for switching between different input languages/keyboards, that feature i have already turned off.) Is there a way to dis…

Unwanted Account Changes.
by Guest M.I.5¾- 2 replies

Here's on I've not seen here before. My principal account has mysteriously changed from being an Administrator account to a guest account. It no longer appears on the Welcome screen, it only being possible to log on by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get the classic logon screen. I cannot change it back to an Administrator account because it is not listed on 'Control Panel'>'User Accounts'. It isn't listed in the available accounts in 'Control Userpasswords2' either. So how do I change it back to Administrator status? This is Windows XP Home by the way.

Weird behavior of mouse (actually stick between G and H on laptop)
by Guest stephnrhumphreys@gmail.com- 1 reply

I have a Toshiba Sattelite with the post/stick mouse control. I've had it for almost a year (used) and it has worked just fine. Today, though, the arrow only moves side to side on one horizontal plane. the up and down motions do nothing whatsoever. After rebooting it may or may not begin to work again. I did a system restore (resets the registry to a backup point) and it began working for a bit, then went to only horizontal movement again. RIght now it is working, but I anticipate it will happen again. What could possibly be happening to make it that I have no vertical control. Also, (and I've seen this on other laptops), the cursor decides it has…

Windows XP with all updates I am having a problem copying a user profile. I researched the MS Knowledgebase and found article 314478 giving instructions for copying a user profile which says Click Start button, right click My Computer, click Properties, click Advanced Tab, Click Settings under User Profiles. Then click the Profile you want to Copy and then click Copy To. This where I have a problem. The Copy To button is grayed out on the Profile I am trying to copy. It is grayed out on some of my Profiles but not on others. I have tried- 1. Rebooting 2. Logging in as a different User- not the one I am trying to copy (also with Admin priv…

backup local profile
by Guest john454- 3 replies

Is there an easy quick way to backup local profiles (C:\Documents and Settings\local profile) across the network without having to reboot and log on with a different ID? When I try and just copy/paste the profile to a network drive, I always get the message files are in use, even though all applications are closed. I'm assuming they are system files that are in use, but I'm hoping there is a way to quickly back it up as we have 4 computers in the house and I backup the profiles off each of the 4 pcs to our version of a "server". Thank you
