Why does my list of RUN commands keep disappearing ?
by Guest dave xnet- 2 replies

Hello, perhaps once a day or every other day, the drop down list of used commands in the RUN box completely clears itself. I can reload, because I've got a .REG file with a list of my frequently used commands to update the RUNMRU keys, but the queston is, why do they keep disappearing. I am not deleting any history I'm aware of. Thanks for any info.

Multiple XP Installs
by Guest evan- 8 replies

I have two 160GB drives in my PC and 3 different installs of XP pro. The C: drive now has 2 old XP Pro installs and I want to reformat the C: drive with a clean install. The D: drive has the latest XP install. I edited the boot file and removed the two C: installs but couldn't delete the C: windows directories. I don't understand why when I reinstalled on the D drive, XP recognized the two old installs on the C drive. I thought since D is a different partition the install would go as a clean install? In any case, I'm concernced that even if I reformat the C drive the new XP install will still recognize the install on the D drive. Suggestions as to …

Desktop/Screen settings
by Guest marc cyrano- 2 replies
Hello I recently changed my screen/desktop settings by adapting the screen properties, thus creating a 'new' theme. All works as advertised but when I restart the computer the screen settings revert to a "standard" scheme. My 'theme' however is available (as shown in the 'Theme" available menus) and current, but is not activated. I then have to activate it and, after a few seconds waiting time, it works. I use the settings: 'Windows-classic' for windows & buttons and 'windows-standard' for colour combination. Can someone explain me what to do in order to start with 'my theme' when I restart the computer? MC

My IEE1394 devices (video camera and external storage) stopped working a few days ago. They had been working for a year+. After saving a powerpoint file, a box from Microsoft was displayed that indicated if I disable "BlackIce" then performance problems would go away ... what really happened is that it disabled my IEEE1394 devices. How do a re-enable them?

I run a small business and I double up as the tech guy running the company's small network. The server is still the old NT4.0, although all workstations are XP Pro. Internet connection is via a TI, and all computers are on private IP with the server static and all workstations dynamic. I have enables the host desktop to accept remote connection. The computer that is intended to be the remote is a laptop. With the laptop connected locally on the LAN I can invoke remote desktop from the laptop and sign-on to the host desktop by specifying the host machine name. The problem I ran into is when I am truely remote with the laptop connected to the Internet …

Disable sub-pixel hinting?
by Guest A User- 1 reply
I really like the font smoothing provided in Windows XP, with one exception... Windows does sub-pixel hinting - uses the red or blue pixel to create a "1/3 pixel". While this is OK most of the time, sometimes I will get extreme color artifacting around smoothed fonts. The characters may correct themselves if I select the area, or minize/restore the window, but it's annoying to seel. Also, my monitors rotate. Sub pixel hinting makes font smoothing absolutely horrible on a rotated monitor. I've check the normal places for a sub-pixel setting, and ran the MS Cleartype tuner, but still no joy. Is there a registry entry, or third party app, or some o…

It's not a public hanging.....but its a start..... ------------------------------------------------------------- "Virginia's Supreme Court on Friday upheld the first US felony conviction for spamming. A Raleigh, North Carolina, resident who made Spamhaus' top 10 list of spammers, Jaynes was arrested in 2003 even before the CAN SPAM act was passed by Congress. Jaynes was convicted in 2005, but his lawyers appealed the conviction. This past Friday, the Virginia Suprem…

Deleting multiple files, maybe using an input file?
by Guest Rick- 2 replies

Hope someone can help -- I need to delete about 50 unrelated files (with no easily-matching patterns in their filenames) from a single directory. I need to do this on the same directory on several different servers. I have all 50 of these filenames to be deleted inside a text file. Is there some way in XP to easily delete all 50 of these files, perhaps using my text file as some sort of input file? Maybe a third-party utility of some sort? Thanks.

How to create a drive access password?

Hi, I was wondering if there is a way in XP Home Edition to create a password to grant access to an external USB drive. In a few words, when I plug the drive in the USB slot, I want to be asked a password to access it. If not via XP, can you suggest a freeware external application to achieve this? Thank you :-) -- Alex

Install Windows from 2nd partition
by Guest Q- 1 reply

We need to reinstall Windows XP on an elderly laptop without a currently working optical drive. The I386 folder is already on the data partition of the drive - used earlier for running SFC. Is the < winnt.exe /s: d:\I386 > command suitable for the install - after first navigating to that folder with a boot floppy? That partition is FAT formatted. A replacement optical drive is on order but will take a week to arrive. And this laptop needs to be up and running a.s.a.p. (an involved story). A very recent back-up image of the system exists - on an optical disc! And We don't have the right adapter handy to hook up the drive to a working desktop to restore …

A message popped up yesterday saying “You may be a victim of software piracy” which I ignored because I know my windows is genuine. When I restarted my computer today the message came up again in the windows startup screen before windows finish loading and asked if I wanted to resolve this issue. I selected no and windows finished loading then restarted my computer. It did this several times until I selected resolve now then windows finished loading and started explorer. It took me to Microsoft but I really didn’t want to mess with it at the time so I closed the page. When I did so my computer froze. I left it a while to see if it would fix but after 20 mi…

what instead of fixboot
by Guest j_slobo@hotmail.com- 3 replies

probably due to virus affecting boot sector as well, win98 disk wont boot or even be accesed when in another win XP PC any more although it can be seen in bios. Read a post saying fixboot can change fat type and screw up file system if virus had changed the fat signature the fixboot relies on so which tool would you suggest at least to fix the boot sector temporarily (to try some other antivirus)? I found avboot from win2k cd but it is not updated by ca.com any more http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/core/fnhb_trb_cwsz.mspx?mfr=true and http://invircible.com/iv_tools.php#Ivinit but it seems it has to run off the sick disk whic…

Folder list on Windows Explorer
by Guest kevin19- 3 replies

I have XP Pro SP2. I have an icon in my Quick Launch toolbar to bring up the My Documents folder. It used to bring up the folder list on the left side and the file list on the right side. Now it only brings up the file list and I have to click the Folder icon to see the folder list. It seems like I remember a register setting to bring this back, but I can't find it. It's cant be fixed by modifying the View menu; I've tried. I never had to add a switch to the icon settings before so I can't figure out how to get it back. Any ideas?
