Ping wrong IP WINXP Prof
by Guest Sapient- 3 replies

Comment: When I execute the command ping http://www.hingedmind.com I get a local ip address. i.e. 10.0.0.10 and when I ping hingedmind.com I get 75.125.60.9, which is the correct address. The problem: I am unable to access this URL through any browser. Another system on the same network has no problems. The other system on the network when they ping sees the correct ip address for both ways. This makes me feel the problem is my system (XP Prof). What is it that is making my system default to a local ip address when I ping a domain name? Hope this makes sense and thanks.

Hi,, I am currently trying to help my friend get his computer right, (someone here already helped with another question I had) and my question is regarding why his computer is working just fine but has yellow Q mark next "Other" in device-manager of which relates to 'video controller'. After right click on properties of the yellow Q, I find it says that there is an 'error 28',, no drivers installed for this device. ??? yet, his screen is just fine to look at and the computer runs fine too. In the Q-mark area, it states that it is a 'video-controller' problem;;;; is the video-controller the equivalent of a video-driver? is it trying to tell us th…

Hi Im experiencing some problems on some of my user machines in my 2003 domain. When they try to save their work from the appliaction that they are running (mostly a 3d CAD program called Solidworks 2007), they get an error message saying Z:\ is not accessible Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. There are enough memory free in the machine so it doesnt seem to be a problem there... If you try to open explorer and access any mapped drive you get the same message... Closing down other applications such as outlook MIGHT give the machine enough power to access the mapped drive again and thus save the work. I have t…

What does delete really do?
by Guest Dave- 5 replies
Not sure I'm on the right list, but --- Let's say I have a rather large Win XP document, no longer needed, so I just 'delete' it. It goes into my Recycle Bin, but let's also then empty it as well. As I understand it, the document is still on my HD someplace (maybe more than one place?), however, by 'deleting' it all that really happened was some of the first index bytes of the appropriate cylinder/track/sector were changed to indicate that particular c/t/s was now available for overwriting. As long as no new material is saved to the HD which overwrites this c/t/s, then, the document is still recoverable by undelete and/or related techniques. Now t…

Windows System Error
by Guest Gordon- 1 reply
I have recently been seeing a Windows System Error pop-up with the message; Insufficient system resources to complete the API, after my computer has been idle long enough to go into sleep mode. I can not figure out what is "insufficient." This is a new computer I built last November, using a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, two 1GB memory sticks and a 500 GB Western Digital hard drive. I am running Windows XP Pro SP 2, MS Office 2007, Adobe Photo Shop, and a few other minor client programs. The system is by no means overloaded. What is likely causing this error message. When it happens the computer won't go into sleep mode b…

Hi there, We're using junctions to mount partitions using diskpart, e.g.: select disk 0 select partition 3 remove noerr select partition 3 assign mount=C:\DATA noerr Unfortunately deleting folders beneath a junction point to the recycle bin doesn't work (no problem with files though): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319368 Bright ideas - other than disabling/bypassing the bin - on how to work around this issue are highly appreciated, thanks.

XP after new motherboard and HD
by Guest mdt- 12 replies
Geek Squad replaced the HD and motherboard in my HP 4/5 years ago. HD crashed again and is unrepairable. GS said they didn't know about "tattooing" 4 years ago, so my Recovery Discs don't work. HP tells me I have to buy XP again. The online retailers that have it for the lowest price tell me Microsoft will ask me for receipts for all my computer components. What the Hell? I'm pissed enough that HP and Microsoft didn't give me the XP discs to begin with. I still have my original Key Code. Is there any other option besides paying Best Buy $200+ for XP, which I supposedly already bought? Thanks

Install Windows from 2nd partition
by Guest Valmiki- 0 replies

I need to reinstall Windows XP on an elderly laptop without a currently working optical drive. The I386 folder is already on the data partition of the drive - used earlier for running SFC. Is the < winnt.exe /s: d:\I386 > command suitable for the install - after first navigating to that folder with a boot floppy? That partition is FAT formatted. A replacement optical drive is on order but will take a week to arrive. And this laptop needs to be up and running today (an involved story). A very recent back-up image of the system exists - on an optical disc! And I don't have the right adapter handy to hook up the drive to a working desktop to restore it di…

Power Surge on Hub Port
by Guest D- 2 replies

Power Surge on Hub Port A USB device has exceed the power limits of its hub port. This error message began popping up recently (no recent hardware or software changes). Message appears even if there is nothing connected to a USB port, and if a wired or wireless mouse is used. It occurs both on wake-up from standy, and on start-up. I have tried re-setting the port (as recommended), but the message reappears after a few minutes. Disabling USB 2.0 seems to work (as recommended by Microsoft), but that's not a solution! Googled the error message, but no luck there either even though it looks like a very common problem. Some people suggest removing Servic…

USB 2.0 in XP SP2?
by Guest meo- 7 replies

Is the XP SP2 update suppose to upgrade USB 1 capabilities to high speed USB 2.0? I have an older Dell Inspiron 4150 notebook with the SP2 update installed, but my USB port doesn't function at USB 2.0 speeds. I have bought a USB 2.0 PCI card, but it would be more convenient to upgrade my original USB port to high speed if that is possible. Is that possible? I've been poking around on these forums to research possible advice and solutions, but there is so much info to wade through, please forgive me if this question has already been asked elsewhere. Thanks for any advice, meo

Compress drive to save disk space
by Guest mcp6453- 5 replies

A previous user of a computer with XP Home checked "Compress drive to save disk space" on a data drive. The drive is 300GB, and it has 275GB of compressed data. What happens if I uncheck the selection? Will the compressed files be expanded back to their normal size? How much space has to be available on the drive to make this happen? What happens if not enough space is available?

MP3 Properties/Summary Problem
by Guest Charles Lee- 1 reply

I have been going through some of my mp3 music files & updating the properties.... Now, nearly all of them have the expected standard Artist, Album Title, Year, Track Number, Genre, Lyrics... etc.... under 'music' in the summary.... but.... I do seem to have a few random mp3's that only list Track Number, Title, Comments, & nothing else at all under 'advanced' which doesn't make sense to me... xp identifies them all as the same file type, standard MP3 Audio... I certainly cannot spot any file differences at all.... any idea how to enable the full summary selection so that I can add the Artist data etc.... Tia....
