Re: broadband I am writing this letter to ALL Wireless Router manufacturers. I have a Linksys Wireless Router Model:BEFW11S4. It is 7 years (yes, count them, all of seven little years) old. I have visited the Linksys website numerous times trying to set up the WEP/WPA security on that wireless router (as all responsible wireless router owners should!). I found that there are no links to any wireless router setting websites that are congruent with the screen shots from Linksys' own self help technical support site. I have had to call Linksys several times to resolve this issue only to be placed on hold for lengthy times (sometimes my call was droppe…

Wireless access point periodically fails...?
by Guest Kenneth- 20 replies

Howdy, We use a Linksys wireless access point in our home... On occasion (and apparently randomly) the systems show a message saying "Unable to connect to wireless network." At that point, if I try to reconnect, I see a dialog saying "Waiting for network" but no connect is created. When that happens, I have learned that if I power down the wireless access point, and power it up again, all the systems will connect in moments. What might be causing such a failure of the wireless, and might there be a way to correct it? Many thanks, -- Kenneth If you email... Please remove the "SPAMLESS."

Search mysteries in xp
by Guest Cheska99- 1 reply

I've finally got one of my computers to run search really fast--and it's becoming a really useful tool for me, finally. But I'm confused about many of its ways. For example, when I look to see where the file it's found is located, it will give me incomplete information. It says a file is on my desktop, but it's not visible to me on the desktop and must be within at least one folder. Do you know of any good tuts that delve deeply into the search feature so that I can really make it work for me?

Hi, Is there a fix for there not being buttons to remove or change installed applications in the Add/Remove part of the Control Panel? Most entries do not have the buttons, but some do. Any ideas? -paul

taskbar annoyance
by Guest Paul Pedersen- 6 replies

I use applications that have buttons near the bottom of the screen. If I move the mouse to those buttons and click, the taskbar unexpectedly jumps up and intercepts the click. I assume that Windows thinks it is being helpful, but this is really a pia. How can I turn off this "feature"? "Enhance pointer precision" is off.

Windows XP Theme & SP3
by Guest WJB- 3 replies

Hi, I just installed Windows XP Pro SP3, and when I rebooted, my display theme reverted back to the old Windows 2000 classic theme. The original Windows installation was Windows XP Pro SP2, so there's never been any hint on this computer of Windows 2000. The display theme does indicate it is set to Windows XP (the default blue theme). I even tried to change it to Olive Green then to Blue again hoping to trigger a change, but no success. Is this an SP3 issue or is there something I can change in my configuration? Thanks

Automatic updates becoming compulsory?
by Guest spamlet- 12 replies

I have noticed of late, a tendency for automatic updates to just start up on their own without any warning. On a laptop with little space, I recently had to pull the plug pdq to stop service pack three loading without so much as a by your leave. Then today I turn on my pc (XPPro) and instantly the little shield appears telling me it's downloading updates, with no indication of what or why. Again, luckily, I have a wireless connection and can instantly pull the usb dongle... I always have my machines set to inform me of updates and only allow those that I particularly want. Now I find that the pc has been reset to completely automatic without any ac…

Cant Install Some Programs

A friend of mine is running Windows Media Center. He had a virus and killed his system so I restored it from an image that was a year old. We put Service Pack 3 on his computer and updated all critical patches. Installed Explorer 7 too. Before the virus, he never had Service Pack 3 or IE 7 but I installed them since I wanted to get him all up to date before he takes his computer home. When he took the computer home, to install his personal software, he ran into similar issues with two of the installations. Quicken 5 and FireFox will not install. Firefox error indicates that it can't write to the Registry and the Quicken 5 error states something si…
