CODEC:KillingJoke
by Guest robb- 1 reply

This is from KillingJoke, dated Sept.7,2003, the Google Group is Alt.Video-Divx, and the subject is Codec: I would like to configure this and I do not know how. Can i get some help, please? I am running MS Windows 95, Service Pack Candidate 3. Ideally i would be able to configure and use the ideas provided by KillingJoke: ADVISE. Here goes: "UNINSTALL ALL CODECS YOU HAVE INSTALLED". I.e. don't have any codecs on your system unless you intend to rip your own stuff. You need 3 things to watch AVI files: ffdshow ac3filter and a decent player - BSplayer at http://www.bsplayer.org That's it - nothing else, nil, nought, zero else. Ok Kj "

I have a friend sitting far away from my home. He is not a computer expert but wants to follow my advise to split his (only) current partition (C:) into two partitions (C: and D:). I would do such an operation from a bootable CD with Partition magic or Paragon Partition Manager. Howver as I said before I am NOT sitting in front of this computer and he can not do such operations like choosing extend partition and create logical and ... So I am searching for a way to tell his computer (through remote session) from a running session to do the patition resize+creation at next startup/boot. In detail the following should be done: 1.) Shrink partition C: fr…

Windows XP SR2. I have a user who reformatted his disk and reinstalled Windows XP. Whatever he did, he now has a C: and an E: partition, with C: being small and E: having the rest. This guy should only have C: and it should have all the space of his 200 GB drive (argh!!). How can I help him merge E: with C: without starting over from scratch? Thanks. -- Dr. Doug Pruiett Good News Jail & Prison Ministry http://www.goodnewsjail.org

by Guest Yvonne- 1 reply

This has happened to me twice in the last few days. I have uninstalled programs in which I don't use any longer. But I can't seem to my memory availability on my computer. If I look into system it only tells me how much I have. I want to know how much is available and how much virtual memory I have. Is there anything I can be doing to keep this from happening in the future? Does it mean that I need to purchase more memory? Thank you in advance for any and all assistance in this matter. Yvone

Getting BSOD -- in safe mode as well -- drive still seen in bios, but booting off CD -- file system not recognized (NTFS -- not listed -- while slave drive is fine). Would running recovery console fix mbr or fix boot be useful -- then could do a checkdsk /f as well. BSOD says says to run chkdsk /f. Computer is used to run an instrument in lab -- files on HD would like to recover -- what are the recommendations?? Thanks.

Files in \windows\installer folder
by Guest Lee M.- 1 reply

There are almost 5 gigs of files (including dozens of about 100MB each) in the \Windows\Installer folder (XP Home, SP2). I moved some of the oldest ones to another folder and everything seems to be running fine. The 100meg files are all labelled "windows installer patch." What are these and can they be deleted? Thanks.

I had Windows Search on my IBM laptop with XP Pro. On Saturday March 8th, I had 75 GB Free Space. On Sunday March 9th, I had no space on my hard drive. I found the file taking all the memory that related back to Windows serach is under all user files. I have uninstalled Windows Search, and I have my memory back. Some of the office programs ( Outlook ) want me to reinstall Desktop Search. I sent Microsoft and email, not sure if this will help.

My Admin Accounts are MIA
by Guest Top Shelf Jim- 4 replies

Experts, Instead of the Windows blue welcome screen with user icons, our PC now offers only a black screen with a log on box for a default user with limited rights. We can log on and access my wife's docs and get online, but have no access to either of our two admin accounts. Any chance I can restore/regain access to these accounts? Neither one was password protected.

Quicken and Com Error
by Guest the third party- 6 replies

I am updated with Windows XP and recently my Quicken program stopped working. Each time I try to start it I get a Crash with a Com Error. After going a long way with the Quicken people, we believe it is a problem with the system. I have no idea where to go from here. What is the Com Error, it gives no other details. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program too many times to mention.

systray.exe not displaying all icons
by Guest YellowTump- 2 replies

I'm having a problem with the display in my System Tray (aka Notification area). It's worked fine since the computer was new (about a year) but recently the Volume control has disappeared, as has the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon, which used to appear when I had a USB card reader attached. I've also noticed that the Instant Messenger icon has re-appeared, although I've done my best to kill it permanently. Other icons (notably BBC iPlayer) are sometimes there, sometimes not, but that's not a big issue. I've followed the procedure for re-displaying the Volume Icon (both in Task Bar and Control Panel), and got it to reappear, but I cannot get the 'Safely …

by Guest Kurt M. Sanger- 2 replies

When I log in as admin under safe mode I can not turn off the screen saver. I select properties on the desktop, settings, screen saver, select none, but it doesn't take affect. If I close and reopen properties they are back to the defaults. Please tell me how to disable the screen saver when logged in as admin under safe mode. I think its related to why I can't finish running spybot.

Keyboard/Pointing Device Locks up
by Guest john454- 0 replies
I have a laptop running Windows XP Pro. When the laptop is undocked, and I boot up the machine, everything works until I get on the sign on screen....both the keyboard works, and the touchpad/mouse. I can wait 10 min or so at the sign on screen and everything is fine. Once I do a ctrl-alt-del and logon, 50% of the time, the keyboard and/ or touchpad/mouse will lock up and stop working. The only way to fix it is by rebooting and hoping on the reboot there are no issues. A look in event viewer shows the following message: Event ID 7000 - The parallel port driver service failed to start due to the following error: The service cannot be started, either be…

Another Stolen Laptop Question
by Guest Recursive Error- 15 replies

My HP Laptop with preloaded XP Pro was stolen. I do have the HP branded XP Pro install disk ("only for distribution with an HP PC") that came with the laptop and the product key from the sticker on the now stolen laptop. I got some insurance money and I am looking to buy a replacement computer (probably a desktop model, also from HP) but Vista is my only OS option. If possible, I would like to reformat the new PC using my old XP Pro disk. Most of the discussions surrounding this scenario seem to say I'm not able to use my old disk to install XP Pro. A few opinions seem to differ. I believe there are both licensing issues and technical issues. The licensing …
