Dell Dimension 5150 not displaying thumbnails properly
by Guest cam35pilot- 1 reply
HI, I have a Dimension 5150 that I bought for editing my HD videos and digital photos for my website. It's out of warranty (sat in a box while I moved, then didn't get set up for a long time), so I thought I'd just ask this group about the one problem it has. It will not display thumbnails properly. In a folder of images, or on the desktop, it will not display the thumbnail in anything but the lowest resolution (looks like a 1Kb bitmap image, smaller than a normal thumbnail). It will also not put the thumbnails into normal "row order". In other words, instead of the folder showing 6 or 8 thumnails across, it will show one, then on the next row down, an…

got this trojan mscmsr.dll - don't know where it came from...
by Guest David D- 8 replies

I am dealing with this issue of a trojan that my Anti-Vir software continues to inform me about when I run any spyware programs like Lavasoft or Spybot. I delete the file with the Anti-Vir, but it seems to keep popping up. I think this is a new one because the google search I did on it says 'March 04, 2008'...lucky me. So what do I do about it? Right now I am running Anti-Vir full system check in Safe mode. The files is located in the Windows/system32 folder. Anybody else have this trojan? Any suggestions? I can't do a system restore because I have been instead backing up my hard drive about once a month (and it has been close to a month since the last bac…

I've been getting this message every now and then and it won't stop coming up until i restart my computer. "The application failed to initalize properly (0xc0000142). Click ok to terminate the application." Clicking ok closes the error, but I get the same error with any program. Task Manager fails to open on CTRL+ALT+DEL and a couple programs in the system tray wont open (uTorrent always fails to open from the system tray when thios happens). The only way to get my computer back to normal is to restart it, but the shutdown process takes about 20 minutes to complete. Usual shutdown time is less than 2 minutes. I'm running windows xp pro on an amd …

Explorer.exe Hanging
by Guest Malcz86- 1 reply
We've had a few PC's recently with a funny problem. All applications on the computer work but the taskbar and start menu stop functioning. They are still visible but there is no response from clicking on a task or the start button. Launching task manager then clicking "File" "New Task" and typing explorer.exe seems to resolve the problem. Has anyone got any idea what could be causing the issue?

Can't login locally after Remote Desktop session
by Guest mjlazar- 5 replies
Has anyone ever heard of this? I can't find anything on the internet. When I remote into my PC at work (we use Cisco VPN Client) and disconnect or log off, I can't log in locally when I come back into the office. All I get is my blank background on all of my monitors (I have three monitors which may be causing the problem to begin with). The mouse pointer moves around the screen, but when I press cntl-alt-del to bring up the login screen, nothing happens. If I go to another PC and try to remote into it, it works no problem. Only option is to do a hard reboot (or restart it through another remote desktop session), which sucks if I am running a large …

Autoplay Freezes computer
by Guest Russ- 2 replies
Hi I am having a problem with an XP Home computer. When you insert a DVD into the DVD burner drive, the computer regularly freezes, requiring a manual restart. I have tried different drives and cables but the problem remained. I then tried disabling the autoplay function (via the registry) and this appears to have fixed the problem, the computer does not appear to freeze any longer. The question is, does anyone know what could cause this issue and what can be done to fix autoplay? Note, the computer is only about a year old and has decent specifications. Any help would be appreciated.

Moving my hard drive to newer PC
by Guest cam35pilot- 6 replies

Hi, Can anyone give me an idea on what I need to "watch out for" when I take the 20GB hard drive from my Pentium 3PC and add it as a "slave" to my 1st generation IBM P-4 PC? I have all of my website and email mailboxes on the P3 computer, and I want to just move that to the newer (still only a 1.4 GHz P4) PC so that I can get some room on my work-station. They are both Windows XP Pro machines, so I think it will be fairly easy. Am I wrong there? Rich

CD drive hiccup?
by Guest ManyBeers- 0 replies

I downloaded a PCLinuxOS 2007 ISO image to my desktop. Used Hashcalc to do the md5 checksum to make sure the download was not corrupted which it wasn't. I used Isorecorder to burn the image to cd to make a live cd. This worked fine just like it did when i did the same procedure earlier in the day to Open Suse 10.3. I used OpenSuse fLive cd for about an hour and everything went fine. PcLinux was much slower than OpenSuse to get going. Finally after 30 minutes or so i was at the desktop after logging in as Guest. I immediately went to Suse's Start button(or equivalent to Windows) to shutdown. But the button didn't work and i was basically stuck there. So th…

Repairing XP Media Center Edition with an XP home SP2 disc? Safe?
by Guest Indeliblebird- 8 replies

I have an Acer Aspire 5100 notebook that came pre-loaded with MCE and that is now starting to cause me problems (blue screen, various errors, etc.) I had these problems a few months back and was able to simply do a system restore to solve the problem, this time however, I cannot restore (all of my system restore points prior to the middle of last month have disappeared). My dvd-r drive will not recognize cd or dvd-r media properly (I have avi's saved that it won't pick up at all), my user accounts except for the administrator account have disappeared and when I try to remove them they aren't listed. When I try to re-create them, MCE tells me they already…

Since my new computer uses SATA drives, after years of faithful, dependable service, I think I'm going to have to abandon Norton Ghost 2003 and switch to something else. I do have a valid copy of Norton Ghost 9.0 which I've never used. Will Norton Ghost function dependable with SATA drives? Will it work for copying a SATA drive to a PATA drive and vice versa?

Windows Defender Registry Key HKEY_USERS

I hope someone can help me with this. I have had a number of issues related to Windows Defender and Windows Automatic Updates, and despite Microsoft logging on to my computer umpteen times and trying to overcome this, am still having issues with this. I was informed that I needed to contact my laptop manufacturer and find out how to do a clean install and reinstall everything. I am doing an online course right now and do not want to take this drastic step unless I absolutely must. I want to ask a few more questions of those who may know the answer to my question. I went into the registry and looked at the key for Windows Defender, as noted above in t…
