desktop icons
by Guest Johnny- 5 replies
I want to create my own unique icon graphic. I am using a custom made inventory program. The desktop shortcut icon is assigned by me by choosing an icon from "Windows/system32/shell32.dll". I do this by clicking on the "change icon" tab in the properties dialog box. It seems like I should be able to create a picture in Paint and use it somehow for my icon graphic. Any ideas on how to do this?

Hello all I have recentrly tried the game Bioshock and since it has problems running on my pc I then uninstalled it. Unfortunately it has left Securom on my pc, which I want to get rid of. I contacted Securom and they gave me the link to a program which they said would remove Securom except the drm data. ( I downloaded this program and when I tried to run it I was informed by my antivirus (AVG Free) : Threat Detected While opening file C:\SecuROM_Uninstaller.exe Trojan horse SHeur.AUGX I contacted Securom and informed them of this and their reply was This is a false positive detection. We will contact AVG regarding this issue. The program was deleted by AV…

Looping Userinit.exe when logging on
by Guest bigfub- 0 replies

After running a health check on the laptop of one of our remote users yesterday (defrag, disk cleanup etc) I updated the virus scanner to McAfee V8.0 hotfix 13 and ran a complete scan. The only thing the system stated it had found & deleted was a single trojan proxy.piky. This was in a *.tmp file that had popped up in notepad as soon as the desktop opened following logon. However, after rebooting, the laptop runs the login script but then goes no further. Taskmanager shows 100% cpu usage and the userinit.exe process running in excess of 100 times. This is the same when trying to run in safe mode but if I edit the registry and replace userinit.exe with …

Many DVDs will not play
by Guest Sirtokalott- 4 replies

Please can someone help? At some point last year both my DVD ROM and my DVDRW decided to become picky about which DVDs they will play. Some DVDs will only work in one drive, which is not always the same one. I have no problem with CDs. Both drives used to work fine. I haven't made any changes to the hardware. I have tried installing the firmware from the manufacturer. I have done a full system recovery. I have the proper codecs installed. I've installed service pack 2. I've tried uninstalling the drives then rebooting. Nothing seems to work the drives even have the cheek to say they are working properly. I've seen this problem posted elswhere by…

Message: My computer returned a critial stop message to me today 3/4/2008. So on that message I was asked to send the report to Microsoft, which I did at around 5 pm. EST. The message stated it might be due to a new driver, I haven't installed any drivers recently. The last one was a driver for a microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse about 6 weeks ago. I have been trying to run a system resore, when I'm in the sys. restore wizard, the March calendar is up with today's date. When I try to go to the previous month by clicking on the left arrow, nothing happens...As if there were no previous restore points! That is impossible, The system restore memory s…

Windows Classic Question
by Guest Joy- 5 replies

When I first got WinXP in my computer, I opted for Windows Classic. Now we have the same situation in my husband's computer. I selected Windows Classic for the desktop properties, but when you go to the Start menu, it's still showing WinXP choices (layout) whereas in mine it's definitely the Classic choices. How can I can/correct that in his computer?

Error after upgrading to genuine version of XP
by Guest karen- 3 replies
Hi, I've just upgraded my Windows XP to a genuine version by buying the windows genuine advantage kit. Everything seemed to go well. But later, when I went to the Microsoft web site to check for updates, the computer took longer than normal to opening up the web site. When it did open I clicked on the express update and it began checking for the latest updates. After some time it came up with a message saying I had a problem with my computer and an error code 0x80072EE2. I don't seem to have any trouble opening up other web sites Does anyone have any idea what this means and how I would fix this problem? Karen

A tech removed a virus but when tried to log in again it now has a window asking for a password. We never put a password in originally as it's a family computer and we only use one password for things like this. Someone said there's a microsoft generic password like starblankstar combination for times like this but it doesn't work either. How do you get back into your computer? Everything online says to download a file etc. I can't do that if I can't log in?

I have Windows XP, SP #2, 4200+ AMD CPU. When I run PCPitstop it shows for PING 0 ms, yet it uploads and downloads fine, or I would not even be able to access this newsgroup. When I go to "RUN" and the "CMD" and type "ping pcpitstop.com" it comes back and says it does not recognize such a command. What is causing this?

best practise to clone a user profile folder
by Guest OM- 5 replies
Hi, Can someone advice me what is the best approach to clone a user profile folder within a Windows XP Pro machine? I have been seeing different behaviors when I tried using the copy profile feature within the system properties. Sometimes, the profile that I tried to copy from doesn't include the my document folder. However, when I changed the domain membership around, e.g. disjoin from the domain, the profile folder might include the my documents folder again. And I always try rebooting the machine before I do my profile copy. Is it true that the copy profile function doesn't copy the local settings folder? Should I just copy the profile folder and…

I have 3 PCs on a home network. There are a few things that are blocked by the firewall that I can't seem to allow such as a simple status query from my UPS software. Is there some way to set the firewall to allow anything to go from/to any of the 3 computers on the home network. I can't see where I can allow by IP or Sub address. Thanks for your help.

Looking for Windows backup prog with a catch
by Guest scott Ehrlich- 1 reply

I am looking for a backup program for Windows XP that can back up mapped network drives to a physically attached tape library. There are some catches: - it must be able to perform incremental backups - the built-in backup program can, but it doesn't seem to consider date/time stamp, thus incremental backups really become fulls - no special service, agent, or other software to be installed on the hosts to be mounted and backed up - the backup program must be self- contained, as is the built-in Win XP backup program. Thanks for any leads. Scott
