Files with a .epcx extension
by Guest ygold6- 8 replies
I just started receiving e-mail files that have attachments but they are now getting zipped with a file extension of .epcx. It appears that the only way to open them is with a product by Microsoft call winzip. My service provider tells me its not them that is doing this as when the file is sent to me, the sender has not zipped the file. Does anyone know if MS is doing this or does anyone have any knowledge as to why this is happening. I have not changed any settings on my PC to warrant this change.

Hello, I have installed WDS with group policies successfully, and have configured an intranet search site using the group policy template file from Microsoft. No other settings in the template file have been configured. WDS works ok, but the intranet search does not show on the computer. I looked into the local machines registry, and the setting is there. Has anyone experienced this? Thank you, Krzysztof

by Guest Aaron- 14 replies

I recently decided to reformat my os and start from scratch. I own an Acer Travelmate 2420 and run Windows XP on it. I created the startup CDs and have done this once before. Since I had all my important files backed up I decided to check out Ubuntu since I've heard wonderful things about it. I installed it and tried it out. It was nice except I'm not that technilogically advanced to fully understand and use it. So I decided to go back to XP. However after putting my startup CDs in Windows XP will not load. It appears that I have loaded part of Windows XP and still have the Ubuntu OS on there as well. The only thing that is running correctly is …

I was changing servers and ran a system recovery, because my CA security suite told me I had 7 viruses but stopped giving me an option to remove or quarantine them. When recovery finished all was well EXCEPT there was no volume (sound) icon in the bottom tray (lower right hand corner) and no sound at all. Adjusting all the other volume controls (knob on speakers, slider on videos I watch) does no good at all. No sound. HELP !

Hi, I set up a VPN connection through windows XP pro SP2's new connection wizard, and I have windows xp firewall as the only firewall. I found that if the firewall is enabled, the VPN would not connect. Otherwise, it's OK. When firewall is disabled, I see from the logs the following lines: 2008-03-03 13:13:00 OPEN TCP 192.168.1.111 206.191.121.211 1518 1723 - - - - - - - - - 2008-03-03 13:13:03 DROP TCP 206.191.121.211 192.168.1.111 1723 1518 72 AP 1483709829 2369502654 65211 - - - RECEIVE It seems the outgoing connection from 192.168.1.111:1518 to 206.191.121.211:1723 is OK, but when the server connected from 206.191.121.211:1723 to 192.168.1.111:…

Windows XP can't join Windows Server 2003 domain
by Guest ship- 2 replies

Hi I can't get my laptop running WindowXP Pro (SP2) to join our local Domain on Microsoft Windows Server 2003. I have just rebuilt the hard disk on my (IBM Thinkpad) laptop - i.e. reset the disk to factory defaults. In effect I have reformatted the hard disk (I believe). My desktop PC has joined OK, but not my laptop. I have tried to use the same settings on my (IBM Thinkpad) laptop as are on the PC. The laptop can see the internet, but not the company domain. If I go to System Properties > Computer Name, it gives the correct computer name as it was called before I rebuilt the disk. So far so good. But if I then click on the "Network ID" button &…

Can't see network drive contents or print after hibernation.
by Guest bguill00- 1 reply

Windows XP pro SP2. Dell D830 (also happened on D810 and D820). I rarely shutdown when I leave for the day (hate to wait for Symantec to do it's thing when it's a fresh boot). I generally, hibernate at the end of the day, come out of hibernation at some point at home, work for a while, hibernate again and then come out of hibernation when I am at the office the next day. The issue is 9 times out of 10 when I get in the office again I can't print and I can only see portions of my network shares. If I access a network drive I may see 5 sub folders, sometimes 20, where there are hundreds. If I browse to the the share, same limited contents. I have a few short…

Scheduled Tasks
by Guest bsbm525- 10 replies
Hello, I logged onto a Windows XP SP2 client using a 'Standard User' account & then added 'Disk Cleanup' as a 'scheduled task' using a different 'Admin' acct. (NOTE: I am still logged on as a Standard User) When the Disk Cleanup scheduled task starts, the disk cleanup popup doesn't appear and when I view the scheduled task under the scheduled tasks folder in Control Panel it's status states it's running but it just stays there and nothing else happens. Is there a resolution for this? I am trying to avoid giving the user Admin permissions if possible to run scheduled tasks. Thanks....

xp pro - lost sound
by Guest pc- 0 replies

I've an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe, XP Pro, all the service packs and patches. The board has Realtek ALC850 sound. It's been a no brainer for years. A couple of weeks back my sound went out. About that time the Plextor software I use for ripping audio started acting up. I uninstalled and reinstalled it several times, but it has just stopped working. No big deal, except for the boken audio. This may or may not be related. I reinstalled the latest NVIDIA drivers which include the sound drivers. Nada. I disabled audio in the BIOS, installed a 24 bit soundblaster audigy card, got the latest drivers and installed them. The sound drivers installed ok, but I've go…
