XP Setup Does Not Show Repair Option
by Guest Bob L.- 3 replies
I am running XP Pro and my computer has two hard drives as one is a backup. I have upgraded my motherboard and video card. After doing so, XP would not boot so I tried to do a setup/repair using my CD. The problem is after I press F8 to do the repair, setup doesn’t show the XP installation or other partitions correctly. All that is listed is one "Unknown Partition" of 131072mb. The hard drive I am trying to do the repair on is 500gb. I suspected maybe my CD is bad so I reinstalled my original motherboard and video card and setup works fine and shows all setup and repair options along with the correct partitions at which point I didn’t go any further. XP al…

Monitor user network connections
by Guest eljainc- 3 replies

Hello, Is there a built in system utility or control panel application that can monitor network connections made from other computers? For example, WinXP Home allows 5 simultaneous connections, and WinXP allows 10 connections. In the case of Windows XP Home, if 5 users connect, and a 6th tries to map to a share, they will get an access denied error or similar error. Is there a utility that can be run on this computer that can monitor who is connected and to manually release any connection that is not desired? Thanks Mike

We have a user who connects into our system via VPN. At the end of the month when She tried to VPN her VPN icon disapears! If she backs her clock up by two days the icon reapears! So the big quesiton is: What causes the VPN icon to disapear at the end of the month? P.S. WinXP Pro. All updates installed. Windows SBS 2003. All updates installed. Any ideals? Scott Burke

"You do not have the authority" - ???
by Guest Tony Meloche- 9 replies

I am the only user of my computer, since the day it came out of the box, and Control Panel/User Accounts verifies that I am the owner/administrator. (There are no other user accounts except the disabled "Guest" which appears to be a Windows default to be used if needed). But when I try to schedule Avast! to run automatically at a given time, it requires a "password". When I put one it, it refuses it: "You do not have administrative rights on this computer". I've tried doing it both through Windows task scheduler and Avast's resident scheduler - same result. This may look a lot like another thread here today, but it hasn't been discussed specificall…

Audio / CPU problems
by Guest gaikokujinkyofusho@gmail.com- 7 replies
- 94 views
I have had trouble playing audio on my computer, specifically mp3. When i try to play audio (wmplayer, vlc, winamp, so far) the player ramps up to 50+% of my CPU usage and trying to use any other applications makes the audio skip (it actually seems to get worse the longer i run it to the point that it seems to make itself skip). I had thought at first that it was the player but after trying 3 very different players i think it is the system itself. I am not quite sure where to start here so any suggestions would really be appreciated. Cheers -Gaiko

Hello, It does not appear that dsofile.dll is installed on Windows XP by default. Is it installed on Vista or one of the dot net packs by default? Is there any way of reading office document properties, besides using dsofile.dll? Anything built in to windows xp, vista, or dot net? thanks

Query
by Guest ayshwaryamohandas@gmail.com- 1 reply

Hi I have a query. For certain applicationsin WinXP, when fired to printer , some characters are getting wrongly scaled. But the prn seems to be proper. The problem is found only when directly fired to the printer.. On debugging it could be found that the Wrong Character Scale obtained is due to the incorrect value obtained for pdev- >cgs.FontXForm.eM11 when directly fired to printer...The value should ideally be 0.018880861 for eM11 and eM22 which is obtained when the application is print to file. But on directly printing to the printer the value of eM11 is getting changed to 0.059503075 and eM22 is same as 0.018880861 ..For scaling calculation , th…

Can't open "network connections"
by Guest JClark- 4 replies
XP Pro SP2 all updates I can't open "network connections" to look at tcp/ip settings. I right click on "network connections" in control panel and then click on "open".....nothing happens. If I open "network setup wizard" in control panel, it hangs up on the second screen when "next" is clicked. Everything else seems to be running fine. I have another machine on the same router and it has no problems in the same area. I ran sfc /scannow (one of the few suggestions I found in google search), put in the WinXP CD as instructed, let it run until completed, rebooted. No help. Any thoughts? With thanks, Jack

offline files behaving strange
by Guest Ad- 0 replies

we use offline files for a few years now and it's working fine. A few weeks ago some of our users noticed that synchronizing was very slow. Normally it took seconds to check for differences, now it took minutes. They also noticed they missed a large amount of their (offline) files. I re-initialized the offline files cache (kb 230738) and created a new local copy. The files are still missing. When I look with the explorer, tools, folder options, offline files, view files I see all the files and most of them say "local copy is incomplete". I tested on another PC with another user and it works fine. Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong and how to …

I know this may sound like I have a Wake up On Lan problem but I have always had the wake up feature of the NIC switched off and I don't have any automatic switch on enabled in the BIOS. But for the last 2 weeks whenever I switch the PC running WIN XP Pro SP2 into Hibernate - it switches itself back on - seems to mainly happen at 7 am. I usualy wait around for about 5 minutes after it goes into hibernate to check that all the lights have gone off. Any suggestions/thoughts?

by Guest JanR- 6 replies

My Windows Explorer (Windows XP Pro) keeps crashing when either deleting files (any type e.g. .doc files), or copying files. It is erratic in that I can delete 3 files, and then on the 4th it crashes. I have checked for viruses/spyware etc, and have repaired Windows in case of corruption, but it is still doing it. PC is 2 years old (Dell). Any suggestions? Thanks. Jan

This is probably a stupid question, but how does one log on to the computer as administrater for purposes of doing a repair or upgrade when changing motherboard, processor and memory? I have downloaded the procedure but have never tried to do this. Any advice will be appreciated as I attempt this complicated process(upgrade, repair).

Howdy, We run XP on a few of our systems... On one system only, while browsing the web, as many pages load, a dialog appears saying (in effect) that there are both Secure, and Non-Secure objects on the page, and asking if the user want to view the page. How can we prevent that dialog from appearing? I have reviewed the help file until my fingers were bleeding, but I can't find a way to turn that thing off. Thanks for any help, -- Kenneth If you email... Please remove the "SPAMLESS."
