XP is forgetting language settings
by Guest Paul B- 0 replies

Hi, Suddenly Windows XP-h has been forgetting which input language is selected. I run the Dvorak keyboard layout under the English-Canadian language specification. I've turned off switching languages by shortcut to avoid doing so accidentally. Yet a couple of weeks ago it started happening that I'd be typing along, typically in a browser such as Firefox or Opera, and the language would revert to English-US with the QWERTY keyboard layout. At that point if I switch to another application, such as a notepad replacement, the Dvorak layout is operative. So the fault usually seems to be application-specific. This language switch has also happened in the Win…

Cannot access certain websites
by Guest bob- 11 replies

I have a weird problem with my computer. I cannot access a handfull of websites (get the "IE cannot display the webpage" warning). These are not fly-by-night sites -- they include my.yahoo.com (my start page), moneycentral.msn.com, buy.com, morningstar.com and some others. Everything else can be accessed normally. On my home network, I have a host computer (XP + IE7), another desktop (XP + IE7), and a notebook (Vista + IE7). They are connected by a wired router (Linksys BEFSR41). Generally, the second desktop exhibits the same problems as the host. The notebooks has no problems (at least yet) accessing any website. I tried accessing some o…

WTC Towers: The Case For Controlled Demolition
by Guest schoenfeld.one@gmail.com- 2 replies

WTC Towers: The Case For Controlled Demolition By Herman Schoenfeld In this article we show that "top-down" controlled demolition accurately accounts for the collapse times of the World Trade Center towers. A top-down controlled demolition can be simply characterized as a "pancake collapse" of a building missing its support columns. This demolition profile requires that the support columns holding a floor be destroyed just before that floor is collided with by the upper falling masses. The net effect is a pancake-style collapse at near free fall speed. This model predicts a WTC 1 collapse time of 11.38 seconds, and a WTC 2 collapse time of 9.48 seconds. Tho…

Realtek AC97 sound drivers
by Guest n1ospam@gmail.com- 11 replies
I recently had to reinstall XP due to too many software conflicts. All the hardware was working properly though. Now I have a clean install of XP SP2 with the latest patches but I can't get the sound drivers to work. I installed a driver for my motherboard 865M-G8 and the new hw wizard now recognizes my onboard sound card as Realtek AC97 and installs drivers for it automatically. However it appears with a 'question mark' in device manager and the status window under properties says 'failed to start'. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling but to no avail. I am thinking it's a driver issue as I had sound working prior to reinstalling windows, but not sure what…

My original configuration was: Primary IDE - HD, master Secondary IDE - CD master, HD slave I decided to replace an old primary IDE HD with new SATA drive. I bought Serial ATA PCI card from CompUSA and Western Digital 250Gb HD. Using utility supplied by Western Digital I copied my old disk to w new one, rebooted from the old HD and everything was OK. I saw my new disk as g:\. Now I disconnected the old HD and tried to reboot with a new HD - I am getting a screen: http://www.evkosystems.kgbinternet.com/evkosystems/PC-problems/WinXp2.jpg Does not matter which option I choose - the system reboots. Problem installing XP with SCSI Machine
by Guest mattebrown- 18 replies

So I am pretty tech savvy, but I seem to have reached my knowledge limit. Maybe someone out there can help??? I built my home computer years ago, buying all the cards and devices separately and put the thing together myself – so I know the system pretty well. It is SCSI based. I originally started using Windows ME – then got the upgrade disk to XP. Later downloaded SP 2 and have kept the system up to date constantly through the Windows update feature. The SCSI hard drive I originally put in was 36 Gigs. The drive is getting old, and I need more space, so I got myself a new hard drive (73 Gig) and bought an OEM version of windows XP – yes, I skipp…

I am having a problem with my Recent Docements Lists getting accidentally deleted. I am not talking about the Document List that can be accessed via START-> DOCUMENTS. I am talking about the Recent Documents Lists that may be found in the various Microsoft Office products like Word, Excel, & Powerpoint. My workstation is running XP Pro/SP2 & has Office 2007 standard (licensed). I would like to know where the Recent Document Lists for the various Office products are stored. I'm thinking that the accidential deletions of these lists may be because of some housekeeping program is running amuck. Knowing where the Recently Used Documents Lists are…

spoolsv.exe - 50% CPU usage
by Guest Smirnoff- 1 reply

XP Pro I recently set up file and printer sharing to enable my niece to print from her laptop using a wireless connection. Have since noticed that spoolsv.exe is running in Task Manager and is using 50% of CPU. Did some searching and discovered that it could be a virus, so have run all my (up-to-date) anti-nasty programs and it seems genuine. I then turned off file and printer sharing and all network connections and re-booted but it still appears in TM. If I End Process, my printer icon disappears from the System Tray and I have nothing listed in my Printers and Faxes folder. Have tried using Manual setting in Services and also disabling it. …

Is there still a root fille limit

Back in the day, I learned that you don't use the root directory for files. It seemed like, at the time, the limit was 256. Has that restriction been changed?

I am having trouble doing a scratch install of XP on a (formerly) preloaded HP Pavilion that suffered a HD crash, taking with it the HP Recovery partition. I have tried using XP Home SP2 Integrated install CDs (Retail or OEM) but both won't respect the XP Home key code printed on the sticker on the side of the PC. Once again, there is no HP XP "media" because it was lost inside the crashed HD. I have previously reinstalled XP on an eMachines with an 'XP Upgrade' key code using an Integrated XP SP2 Integrated OEM CD. It just doesn't make sense that I have a valid license, am trying it on the same PC, but can't get it installed. Can someone please help me get…

Hi, I want to rename multiple workstatitions through command line. i searched on the net and came up with the Netdom utility, but this works only if the computer is part of a domain. the Workstations I want to rename are all part of a workgroup running windows XP SP2. if there is a command line to rename them, that would be great, if not, how about a third party utility? When I perform a classic search with the built-in search tool the also files INSIDE ZIP archives are found. This is ok, but unlike "normal" matches the location of the ZIP file is NOT shown. While for "normal" (=non zip archives) matches the directory is shown (e.g. D:\myproject\test\) matches inside ZIP archives are NOT displayed but only the relative path from the root of the zip archive (e.g. "xsd\subset"). How do I find out where in the directory tree the zip archive is located which contains the matched file ? Kevin

I have been given some *ebooks* by a friend. Investigation revealed that I needed *Microsoft Reader* to open them (.lit) OK, so I downloaded and instlled it... I am apparently supposed to *Activate* it... When I tried to, I got: Your browser does not support activation We're sorry, but the Activation process requires you to use one of the following browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 and higher Netscape Navigator 4.08 Netscape Communicator 4.5x Netscape Communicator 4.6x Netscape Communicator 4.7x Oh PANTS!" I don't use or want any of these, I use FIREFOX, so there! I thought MS were supposed to stop this sort of nonsense. The softwar…

Windows Installer box
by Guest Jeffrey Brown- 2 replies

Recently, around the time that I installed Sympatico security securities on my computer, I have found that whenever I start up my computer, I receive a box on my screen with the title "Windows Installer" - Preparing to install. Then it says "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD rom on other resource disk that is not available. Install disk and click OK" I'm not trying to install anything from a CD rom, and it seems to try to grab the same file name all the time. In this case, it tried to install something called "Sonic Update manager." Before that, it tried to install Corel Photo. I don't use the program anyway, so that I deleted the program,…
