Foiled Again? XP Not Quite Recovered
by Guest Watty- 14 replies
Here's the short tale of my story. a. C-drive fails b. All contents of the c-drive are captured onto an external drive c. XP is installed on a new drive. d. unstoppable copier puts contents of external on new drive. Program Files folders and all else are replaced with the 'old' folders e. Put new c-drive into machine and boot up Supposedly the new drive should be identical to the original. True or false? In my case, it wasn't, but the desktop looked good. However, few if any apps from there would fire up. One large non-MS app fires up. Icons are missing from the tray. Folder contents seem to be in order. All Start items are available.

Can't force a reboot.
by Guest ShadowTek- 3 replies

I need to script a forced reboot that will occur when certain conditions are meet. I tried to use "shutdown -r -f", but it would only shutdown Windows to the point where it says "Saving System Settings...", and then just it hangs there and never progresses past that point. I need a method that will actually force a reboot. Is there something else that I can try? I'm using XP Media Center SP3.

RE: WGA Notifications Current News Please I have to cime in here after reading numerous posts on numerous newsgroups and blogs, and on Microsoft non helpful help areas,. etc etc, on the web; you get the pic. Bottom line is I;ve been trying to remove this "tool" for days now, and have tried all of the conventional methods described and known to most folks on the general and other xp groups...none have worked. I've used ones p osted here and other places, and have even found the same inefetive "solutions" on yutube; still here. What I am finding is not the same as many have described as their problems. I am using a genuine version of xp BTW, and it has …

Strange trouble in IE7
by Guest Marco Castro- 5 replies

Hi, I'm experiencing a strange problem in my Windows XP (Version 2002 Service Pack 3). I have IE7 installed and it seems to be IE7 (7.0.5730.13). But I have two problems: 1. My bank account site says that I have a IE below than 5.5. When I try to type a number in an Edit Box that handles 4 digits, it moves to the next Edit Box when I type 3 didgits. 2. I try to connect to a Remote Server and my password is not acnowleged (in other micros it works). Any clue other than reinstall everything (I have 74 installed programs in it)? Thanks, Marco Castro

Cannot go into standby or hibernate - hangs
by Guest redyellowgreenblue@gmail.com- 3 replies
- 286 views
Hi I'm using Windows XP Home edition. I've never been able to use the Standby or Hibernate features, but thought I'd give it go a fixing it to save a bit of electricity. When I select Standby or Hibernate from the start menu, the system will begin to shut down as appopriate, then move onto the blue screen that states "Preparing to Stand By" ---- and that's as far as it gets. It never actually goes into Standby mode, and I'm forced to restart the computer. I've had a look around on Google and haven't found anyone with this problem. I assume some process is not letting the computer standby, but how can I figure out which it is?

win.ini [INTL]
by Guest Jeff- 8 replies

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me. I recently purchased a PC game off of Ebay only to find out when I tried to run it I received a win.ini [iNTL] error. Now the program appears to install properly it is just when I try to run the program that I get this error. I looked on the internet for help on this error and all I have found is that it refers to an INTERNATIONAL error associated with my win.ini file. I have even tried the Windows compatibility wizard but that does not seem to help. The game I am trying to run is an older Win 95/98 program so I believe it has something to do with that but other than that I don't have a clue. It is funny b…

Unable to enter data in PHP Order Form
by Guest cmjames- 4 replies
I am starting a small home business and I have asked a developer to create an Order Form in PHP. My developer has been using both IE 6 and IE 7 to test the form and he does not have any issues. When I tried testing the form on my end in IE 7, I was unable to enter some of the fields and see the updates. I have tried re-installing IE 7 on my PC and I have cross-checked my Internet settings with my developers and I have not been able to resolve the issue. I also tried downloading Firefox and tested the Order form in that browser and it appears to be working fine. I am not sure why I am unable to do the same in IE 7. Can someone help me please? Tha…

Changing Windows XP update download target drive?
by Guest Ian Hayes- 3 replies
I have a friend who has a laptop with two hard drives: an 80MB 'C' drive and a 5MB 'D' drive. Currently there is plenty of free space on the 'C' drive and zero free space on the 'D' drive. For some reason when the Windows Update process is run it is trying to download and store files onto the 'D' drive. As there is no free space on the 'D' drive the Update process fails with an error. How and where can I change the target drive so that Windows Update uses drive 'C' instead? I've checked all the environment variables and they all point to drive C.

Recently I got the "blue screen of death" and since then, I lost my background tab and my screen saver tab and cannot change either one. I purchased the windows live one care package and that didn't help to fix this problem. How do I find out if they have been erased? Or are they just hidden? Is there a way to reload them? Or would I have to take my comp to a technician and have them reload windows. thanks

by Guest Stan Hilliard- 5 replies

Each day I download the identical mp4 video file with program Miro.exe to a laptop and to a desktop PC. On the desktop PC the file size is 441 MB. On the laptop the "same" file is 115 MB. Both PCs are running Windows XP. Desktop=XP-Pro, Laptop=XP-Home. The difference in file size is consistent day to day. What might explain the difference in size? Stan Hilliard

Re: Saving Folder View Settings - Further

Re: Saving Folder View Settings - Further I may have read one too many threads today, but I have not found a solution to: When I run WindowsExplorer (.exe), the My Documents folder is always displayed 'opened' (with all of the subfolders displayed). "Tools/folder options/apply to all folders" seems to apply only to the "view" that is selected, not whether the folder is open or closed! Am I missing something here? (should I re-read a thread or two?) "RobRW" wrote: > Thankyou Ed. That worked. Set the default just as you said and then > customised the individual folders. Settings are now remembered. Am working on a Gateway MT6840 laptop with a SATA hard drive. I've already erased the hard drive with Gateway's GW Scan512 per their tech info. Have also run Killdisk and written all zero's on the HD. 1. I'm unable to format it to the size or nearly the size of the 160GB hard drive. Each time I run fdisk and specify a new format, it only givies me a Primary Disk Partition of 15262 MB. 2. XP Pro does not recognize the hard drive at all. When I let the XP Pro disk boot up in the CD drive it gives me an error message as follows: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and pr…
