How to add Bluetooth to XP Home SP2?
by Guest mr_espresso- 8 replies
This probably sounds lame, but I couldn’t find an answer anywhere on this. My control panel doesn’t have a Bluetooth icon, which apparently I need in order to install two new Bluetooth devices ( Samsung YP-T10 MP3 player and Insignia NS-BTHDP wireless headphones). Both devices are fully charged and connected to the PC's USB ports. Windows recognizes the MP3 player but not as Bluetooth; Windows doesn’t recognize the headphones. I gather I need to get these two devices to handshake (or ‘pair’) for them to work together. Where do I start ...? Thank you in advance!

Extended usb printer cable/ where buy ?
by Guest James- 23 replies
I need a usb printer cable, 18 ft. long. I have searched for a 20 ft cable, thinking that would be a likely length to fit this specific need. I don't find such a 20 ft cable. I find 6 ft 10 ft , and 15 ft, but nothing longer than 15 ft. I would not mind buying two 10 ft cables and joining them with a usb adapter, but to my surprise, I can't find that either !! Anyone have any recommendations for me? The ideal for me is to find a 20 ft usb printer cable. Alternatively, I could solve my problem if I could find a connector that would join two 10 ft cables together. Thanks for any help , including online sources. James

Welcome Page

My wife was watching Oprah's webcast last night and our computer totally froze. So I manually turned it off as I could not do anything including shut down. Now, when I boot up, I get to the multiple users login page, but the system does not allow any users to login beyond that point. We do not have any passwords on the user accounts so it used to just start up when you would click on any of the user names. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

System Not Going Into Standbye Mode
by Guest NJITGS- 1 reply
Why is that my computer will not go into standbye mode after automating my windows fax console? I have set my modem to allow it to bring the system out of standbye mode in it's properties and in the services settings for fax console I have also set to automatic and started. Now my computer will not stay in standbye mode as it was prior. It should be, (as it once was) that my computer will automatically go into standbye mode according to the Power Settings of my choice, then when the fax line that is directly connected to my data/fax modem rings it should bring my computer out of standbye mode and automatically receive and print the fax on my printer. …

by Guest TimK- 1 reply

Hello all, I'm helping a friend of mine build his PC. We're now at the point of installing Windows XP, an OEM version. This is how it goes for us. We make the PC boot from the CD. Put the Windows XP CD in the DVD drive. Get to the blue "To set up windows, press enter." screen. We press enter. The computer than reboots and goes through the same process. We can't get the License Agreement page. It keep going through the same loop over and over again. The Motherboard is an ASUS P5K, with an Intel Core Duo. The HDD is a Western Digital 500gb SATA HD. I've tried formating it with my PC using the Disk Management utility. I've tried so many different thing, but…

I have very little space in which to place my computer for the next month. I will be using it daily. I had heard a long time ago that it was bad for the CPU to lay it on it's side, permanently, so to speak. Is this still true?

Outlook & Mapped Drive Problems Over VPN
by Guest Rafael- 1 reply

Please could someone help? I have a laptop running Windows XP Professional. I connect to the corporate network via a VPN using Netgear ProSafe VPN Client. This connection is established without problems. I have 2 issues once connected over the VPN and these may or may not be related: 1. Outlook will open however, it will not connect. I just see it trying to connect and then it says 'Disconnected' in the bottom right of the screen. 2. I cannot access the mapped drives to the corporate server either. When I click on them to open, I get a message which reads as follows: "An error occurred while reconnecting DRIVE to \\SERVER\SHARE, Microsoft Windows …

Problems playing dvds on Dell Optiplex 745's.
by Guest Mike- 0 replies

I installed Cyberlink 5.7 dvd software on some Dell Optiplex 745's using an external Pioneer DVD. However, I installed it under a user account choosing right click, run as administrator logging in with administrator account. When I play dvd's, the dvds only play under the admin accounts and not under user, power user accounts. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software under the admin accounts and the user accounts and just can't seem to run dvds under power user, user accounts. I've contacted Dell and they really haven't been much help.

Printing is 50-fold slower
by Guest Peter Olcott- 3 replies

I recently installed a different copy of Windows XP Pro on my computer, and found that printing a single page of text to the network printer takes minutes instead of seconds. The install was from a complete re-formatted hard-drive. There are a few differences with the copy of Windows XP, one of them is that I can not create an "Administator" login.

Monitor will not keep display settings
by Guest wlhj@news.postalias- 0 replies

I work for a public library. We provide computers for the public to use. We lock these computers down using group policy with active directory. The public is not allowed to change any settings and if they do manage to change them the settings are not saved as we use mandatory profiles stored on a Windows 2003 server. I set up this profile on a computer and then copied it to the server and then locked it down. Recently we updated our monitors to flat screens from CRT monitors. I set the profile up with the flat screen monitor. Some of the monitors will not keep the setting used with the profile. They adjust at login up to the smallest icon and p…

Strange Desktop Problem
by Guest Victor- 1 reply
I recently have had a problem with Wallpaper Master with a deleted desktop image. Now whenever I minimize an application to show the desktop, the desktop icons don't show. In order to show them I must click on the "Show Desktop" icon in the taskbar. And oddly enough, when I click the "Show Desktop" icon a second time, the icons disappear. The "Show Desktop Icons" Option is checked off in "Arrange Icons by". Any suggestions for a solution? Thanks.

Unread email notification icon on taskbar - removal.
by Guest Poster Matt- 15 replies

Hi, Windows displays an unread email notification 'envelope' icon on my taskbar - that is as opposed to Thunderbird's new email notification message which I've turned off. The Thunderbird forum informed me the envelope icon is a Windows icon which can be turned off by specifying 'always hide pm@nsfm.com has xx new messages'. However I don't like hiding 'inactive' icons - I like to see what's in my memory and find the 'show all' button fiddly. Furthermore... Tweak UI has a 'Show taskbar notification icons' setting but if I switch that off won't I then miss important notifications like my Firewall informing me of an update and such like? Perhaps the…

WebDav - WebFolders - Slow on XP clients
by Guest Ian Robert- 19 replies

Hi, We have a new Sharepoint website which uses the WebDav folders on it. From a windows Vista machine and some Windows XP machines it is fine but we have a set of Windows XP machines on which the Folder browsing (the Explorer View) is slower than normal and actually makes it very difficult to work with. I have tested on a Windows Vista client and all works fine, however on the XP machines the Explorer says "not responding" and the screen doesn't redraw. I applied KB907306 which improved the situation, explorer doesn't seem to hang anymore - but it does still take a long time to be able to navigate the folders - comparing the windows vista to xp mac…

change proxy server programmatically
by Guest pretentious_indifference- 1 reply

Hi, I have Windows XP and IE7/6/5 and I need to have some programmatic way of changing the proxy server (anything will do from scripting to IE addons to a third party application). The key here is that I need the proxy change to take place immediately without closing and restarting IE (if you could restart IE it's very simple - just change the corresponding registry key). That's the problem - I mustn't restart it. :) Any kind of solution or hint would be appreciated. I know some people directed me to IE7 Extension Development forum and I'm thankful for that. I'm fishing for some more solutions/locations. Any other web resource / forum which might be helpf…

Software or Hardware HD Failure?
by Guest Serge Skysi- 6 replies

My 500GB WD MyBook finally keeled over. I restarted my computer yesterday and the drive didn't show up either in Explorer or Disk Management. I tried to restart the drive manually by pushing the on-off button and disconnectinf the usb and power cables, but this doesn't help. The drive actually starts to spin, but then there're tree clicks one after another; after 3 seconds there's another 3-click succession, after which the drive spins down. Those three clicks -- are they the sound of the heads crushing? I'm assuming this drive is finished and can't be restored to a working state. --------------------------------- I have a lot of data on it that I need restore…

Windows XP - Extended Desktop
by Guest Neileuwek- 3 replies

Hi All, I have an Inspiron 9300, running Windows XP, set up to use an external monitor as an extended desktop. This works fine. My problem is how to switch off this feature ! I use the laptop for presentations and, therefore, I need to use it with an external projector mirroring my desktop from time to time. The darn extend option just won't switch off ! I get rid of the tick in Display Properties and it puts it straight back as soon as I try and toggle the projector on using the laptop keyboard control. I guess I must be doing something silly here but I am mystified as to what. Can anyone make some suggestions ? Many Thanks Neil

Why do the following commands result in garbage stored in tractest.txt for Windows 98, but puts the date and time headings into the file "tracetest.txt" for Windows XP as I want? Can these statements be changed in some way so that the date and time are stored in the file properly? date >> tracetest.txt < nul time >> tracetest.txt < nul I have a batch file that puts the date and time in the header of a section of a file prior to running a test.
