sign in error
by Guest GreggP- 0 replies

When I log in after changing the username and password on XP Pro w/SP1, I get a message box with the title "Sign In," which says: "Username and password do not match. (You provided erinkp)" There isn't a problem with logging in, it accepts both the username/password, so I don't know why I am getting this message. Does anyone know what needs to be done to get rid of this message?

Shortcuts to Device Manager and Services in Control Panel, How?
by Guest Poster Matt- 10 replies
Hi, Control Panel is a convenient and sensible place for Windows (XP, SP2) to store the various system utilities and dialogs. BUT 2 of the things I use most regulary, 'Device Manager' and 'Services', are started from either a secondary folder (Admin. Tools) or from the 'System' dialog's 'Hardware' tab -- how inconvenient !! Today after living with this inconvenience for many years I finally got around to creating 2 shortcuts in Control Panel, one for Device Manager and one for Services, only to find Control Panel won't let me add shortcuts. I've added shortcuts to them on my desktop which work fine, but I can neither add a shortcut nor copy one to C…

Acronis Truie Image froze my machine
by Guest Three Lefts- 21 replies

I guess all of the dire warnings on Amazon and elsewhere are valid. This afternoon, I downloaded Acronis True Image 11 Home. The rest of the day was spend trying to recover. The install seemed to go OK. I then tried to do a full disk image backup. My hard disk is 111GB of which about 31GB is used (80GB free). It said it was going to do 2 processes. I only saw one, but that one took about 40 minutes, so I might have missed something. When it was done, I had a .tib file about 18GB in size. I then tried to Mount the volume so I could look at its contents. All hell broke loose. The system froze up so solidly that I could barely start teh Task Manager, and wh…

I have been testing XP SP3 on several machine types and have encountereed a reproducable issue on IBM laptops of the R Class. After installing SP3 the system will boot, but if you run the lenovo system update tool and apply updates the system will no longer boot and sits at a black screen with no activity. System will boot into safe mode. I have tried disabling all unnecessary services and startup programs to no avail. The only solution I have found is to uninstall SP3.

Hi - From my wife's XP laptop (whose XP does not start up anymore) I have copied all files to an external FAT32 HDD using the CD-bootable Linux version Knoppix 5.2 and the normal 'Copy to' command available via the KDE GUI. My plan is to copy the non-system files back to the internal HDD again once I have re-installed XP using the Linux CD. Can this be done safely or will I run into problems due to the NTFS and FAT32 format differences? Please note that the files copied are NOT part of a partition or drive image but just normal file copies (I believe this will make a difference since I have learnt from a previous post that full images can be copied back …

Default folder locations in XP
by Guest Stephen- 2 replies

Hi, I'm struggling with a problem with my default folders (My Pictures/My Music etc.), when I first used the PC, I restored a load of data from my backup drive on the LAN, XP seems to have taken that destination as the default for My Pictures/My Music etc. The problem is, when I go to install certain programs, - particularly those which compute disk space before installing- I keep getting an error which says the location is inaccessible/unreachable, this of course is a real headache when the laptop is away from the LAN! I've followed the advice given in the Help & Support centre, but when I enter the console, the option advised is missing from the c…

OT: Seagate HDparm ? ...
by Guest RJK- 4 replies

Anyone know where to find, on the Seagate web site, the utility dos program for Seagate hd's (if one exists) / equivalent or similar to Hitachi's HDparm, for setting accoustic characteristics etc. I've been searching for ages and all I can find is the diagnostics / self test download. Though it's beginning to look a little like accoustics are designed and/or handled differently in some Seagates models. TIA regards, Richard

Does anyone know a way to "Show icons for networked UPnP devices" or "Hide icons for networked UPnP devices" via the command line? It's usually accessed in My Network Places under Network Tasks. I've come up empty in my searching. Thanks, -- Terry R. ***Reply Note*** Anti-spam measures are included in my email address. Delete NOSPAM from the email address after clicking Reply.

222MB MSOCache and Cabinet Files on my Data drive- Why?
by Guest Taxed Mind- 3 replies
"I have recently reinstalled windows afresh onto my C: drive. My D: drive (for data) which I formatted just before the windows reinstall has a Hidden folder called MSOCash. Under a series of sub folders are a big collection of "Cabinet Files". This second drive is partitioned, such that Drive D is supposed to be for Data and Drive E for Recovery Files. I am using Win XP. What are they and why are there so many and taking up so much space? Can they be deleted? Thanks in advance (ps anyone having trouble with the search feature on this forum always returning "not found"?)

Does anyone know how I can do a complete workstation registry search and replace based on a keyword. We migrated to a new file and print server and in every workstation registry is the old file server name all over the place. I ideally would like to just replace the old server name "w2afpsys000" with the new name "w3sfp1" in the registry. Thanks Chad

Can not enter password at welcome screen
by Guest ABQMAN- 22 replies

I have a log on problem with not being able to enter the password at the welcome screen. This problem is common on all three of my computers running Windows XP SP2 with all updates and are made by different manufacturers. They are all configured with welcome screen and fast user switching. All users have administrator accounts. Symptom: The first log on is always normal after a reboot. When you log off from one user to another there is no flashing cursor or insertion point to enter the password on the welcome screen. This is intermittent happening about 25% of the time. I have not noticed the problem when using the “switch user” mode. The work around…

MP3 attachment are recieved as untitled.bin in Outlook, OutlookExpress is OK?
by Guest MelvinEdward- 3 replies

Our office has 45 workstations. When Clients send a PM3 attachment to our office (Example mps size is 2Meg file) it shows up as a (1meg) on all the Outlook workstations as an untitled.bin file, and it won't open up. With the exception of two workstations that use Outlook Express and they receive it ok. I tried the leve1remove in the registry that was not help. I can play a MP3 on all the workstations so the file association is ok. It can't be the ISP as two workstations receive the MP3. The virus protection is a different vendor on the affected workstations, so it's not associated with that. I did find that you can rename the untitled.bin to xxxxx.mp3 and it …

I moved the page file to a thumb drive but Wxp ignores the thumb drive and put a 1500mb page file on partition C. The registry correctly shows the page file as being on the thumb drive. It appears that I have found another page file bug. Would someone confirm my discovery?

dll file causing slowdown?
by Guest Luke- 1 reply

a strange event occurred the other night: i was surfing the net and, simultaneously, clearing some un needed programs from my hard drive. i selected a demo of an old game (Soldier of Fortune) for deletion through the start menu and immediately afterwards i received a ".dll exception" message and explorer had to kill itself, forcing a restart. i do not recall the exact dll file, as i sort of freaked out and later couldnt recall the exact error code. i do not think that my attempt to delete the game file caused this because there were no vital dll's in the game file, i think it was coincidental, but what could have caused it? after restarting, all of…

DVD RW write operation is normal until the system has been in Standby. After starting from Standby the write operation will appear to complete but then goes into Not Responding status. A system reboot will reset this state and write operation will complete. This is consistent Using XP Pro with all updates installed. Nero 6.6.1.15 installed
