Where is the .csv file?
by Guest JD- 16 replies

In an attempt at backup, for future restore after reinstalling Windows, I "exported" my WAB into a .csv file. However, I was not asked to designate a location. Surely I need to move this file to an external drive if it is to be of any use to me in the future. Where can I find it?

by Guest JD- 5 replies

We use only the default "Owner" logon, with no password. I am curious as to what would happen if one of us carelessly clicked the "Logoff" button when shutting down. I'm afraid to try it to find out.

How Do I View My Current Memory?
by Guest Sarah K- 5 replies
Hey Everyone, I'm looking for somewhere in XP where I can view what my current memory percent is? I've been having problems with it being low lately, according to a source I'm not sure I can trust or not, and want to compare it to what my computer says/xp says. I know there was something, I think in the ctrl-alt-del window, in 98 that showed the RAM percent currently not being used, but can't find it in XP. Thanks tons!

Taskbar acting strangely
by Guest Rodf- 0 replies

Hi, I have XP Home edition running on a Dell 5150. All working fine until yesterday when I noticed that when I want to swap between applications via the taskbar - e.g. Word, Excel, IE - I have to click the icon in the taskbar 3 or 4 times before the window maximizes. Normally, you only need to click the minimised window ONCE in the taskbar and it will open. What happens is this - when I want to change from Word to IE, I click IE in the taskbar once, the minimised IE window icon changes from blue to orange. I click IE in the taskbar a second time, then the icon starts flashing orange. I click IE a third time and the IE window opens. This is a real anno…

Turning off the computer without Windows.
by Guest Frank Martin- 6 replies
Can I turn off my computer at the main switch without going through the Windows method? I have Windows XP. When I shut down the normal way the computer starts up again all by itself, and I have tried all fixes without success. If I wait for the HDD light to stop flashing would it be OK to turn off the power then? I'm desperate. Alternatively, can I isolate the HDD and other critical components by using the WindowsXP software before throwing the power switch? Please help, Frank.

Bridge Sound from TV Tuner Card to onboard Sound Card?
by Guest Spare- 2 replies
My last PC had some connections on the motherboard to bridge the sound from the TV tuner to the onboard sound card. My new PC (Dell Vostro 400) does not have those connections on the motherboard. Can I splice a headphone jack connector onto the three-lead wire so that I can then plug it into the "Line In" jack on the exterior of the case? Is the signal the same? What is the wire->connector mapping? Thanks!

Disk Error: Cyclic Redundancy Check
by Guest Tau_Ceti_2- 7 replies

Hi all, I have stored all my media files (.avi) on a single 500GB Western Digital USB drive. When backing it up to an identical 500GB USB drive, I got this error: "Error: Cyclic Redundancy Check" It seems to be affecting several files within the same folder. I have 2 questions: 1) Even if I erase and then reformat this drive (erasing it wish DiskWipe for example) can I still trust this drive to store all my media in the future? 2) How do I know whether or not it is a physical problem with the drive, or if it is just the files that are corrupted? - Tau_Ceti_2

Noticed the SP3 RC2 can only be installed if SP2 has been installed. I use SP1. Does anyone know if SP3 will eventually have the capability of being applied over ANY version of XP?

XP Won't Remember Themes
by Guest Weasel Keeper- 3 replies
XP does not remember my settings when it starts up. I set "Classic Windows" under the Display Properties and apply/save it. When I reboot it loads the standard XP themes. Also it resets my screen saver from "Blank" to "Windows XP". Also my sounds are reset to the default. I have recently moved this hard drive from another PC to the current PC. Before I never had this problem. I also was looking in my resistry, although I don't recall changing anything.

I ran a file from Kelly's Korner to resolve a problem with my taskbar and changed a registry entry. The file is regopen.vbs. The result of running the file is that the "lock the taskbar" option is no longer avilable to me and the taskbar is permanently locked. I would like to undo the change to the registry entry or how to revert the registry entry back to its origianl status. -- oumalou

Eraser; http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/ A 1-pass psydorandom is enough for normal use (protection against undelete apps) unless there's actually the chance that someone's going to disassemble your hard drive and do a very detailed analysis. A 7 or 35 pass will normally just waste time. There's also a portable version which is handy to keep on a USB drive: http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/eraser_portable

cannot copy file:
by Guest kbloomfield@yahoo.com- 4 replies

Hello, I have a HPpavilion laptop, XP Home 2002 SP 2, with a 98 GB hard drive. Just bought a maxtor basics portable 160 GB USB drive. So use windows explorer to list all the folders, and files, on the C drive, select all, and ctrl-C. then select the F: drive where the maxtor lives, and ctrl-v. Get a copying popup saying "Preparing to Copy", After a few minutes get a further popup entitled Error Copying File or Folder with the message "Cannot copy file:". So I format the maxtor - no problems - and run chkdsk against the C drive - no problems. Any suggestion of what might be the problem? Or even better the solution? TIA K

acpi.sys keyboard issues
by Guest dynamo52- 0 replies

Hi everybody, I am having a problem with an HP Pavilion laptop model # hzd7168cl. I will note that his is a multiboot system and this issue is present in 2000, XP, and Vista, but not DOS 6.22, Ubuntu, Suse, or even OS X (yes you read that right, I have 7 bootable systems on this machine). For the purpose of simplification, I will limit this post to XP Pro as it is my primary system. The issue is that the onboard keyboard and touchpad stop responding intermittently. For example, as I type, every few seconds a few letters are dropped completely. Needless to say that this is very infuriating as I have to constantly reenter/ correct text input. As to the tou…

Drop down menu / My computer delay
by Guest David- 0 replies

Please help...Whenever I use a drop down menu the XP window will freeze for about 90 secs before the menu opens. Say I'm in network connections and I use the address bar to navigate to my docs,my computer, etc. As soon as I hit the drop down arrow the window will freeze. This takes place also when trying to open a file using the run feature on the start menu and having to navigate there using the drop down menu ..Also if I open " My Computer" from my desktop or start menu the window will open immediately but will search for a couple of minutes before finding the files. One last thing that happens is when I boot up the computer it now goes directly to s…

Windows Installer Problem
by Guest paoloricardo@gmail.com- 2 replies

Every time I boo up my PC, Windows Installer pops up and tries to configure VMWare Workstation for installation. This is strange since I uninstalled VMWare some weeks ago, and as far as I can tell, have deleted any remaining references to it in the Registry. I've also run the Windows Install Cleanup utility which shows no references to VMWare. Can anyone assist in preventing this happening? I've disabled the Windows Installer - as a temporary measure - but this doesn't stop it momentarily flashing onto the screen at boot up.

Windows log-on screen
by Guest Robert Bodling- 6 replies

When I start my Windows XP it starts up waiting for me to point and click on my user profile (or picture) to get it to continue loading and start. I would rather boot up, and have it go straight into the desktop and load all the drivers and everything on its own instead of waiting for me to tell it to continue. Sometimes I want to reset or restart and continue on with something else in my busy day and not have to wait for it to ask me if this is who I am and to continue, then wait for it to complete it's loading... what can I change and not screw it up???
