Windows is NOT starting successfully.
by Guest Madison Arrowood- 3 replies

Hi, As of yesterday, whenever i try to start my Windows XP computer, this error message appears: "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change may have caused this. If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect yor files, choose Last Known Good Configuration.\ If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Rest button was pressed or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows normally." I have tried every option including pressing F8 and rebooting, and reb…

reoccurring issue with Zip files
by Guest ac2006- 4 replies

I have a user who keeps having the issue where he can’t see his Zip files when trying to attach them to a message in Outlook. This started happening about a year ago. I unregistered the following dlls on his machine and this would fix the issue for a little while, then suddenly it would come back and I’d have to unregister them again. regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll regsvr32 /u cabview.dll He is running Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 and all the latest updates. Plus he has WinZip 11 installed. I ended up re-imaging his machine (we use Ghost and he has the same image as dozens of other users) and the problem went away for almost a year. Su…

Reverting to XP from Vista
by Guest p.jayant- 15 replies
I have been struggling to stabilize my Vista spending a lot of money not only on the Vista OS but also to upgrade to Dual Processor (for the required speed), 2 GB memory and change of graphics, video and sound cards to make them compatible with Vista. But all that has failed and I can neither continue my work of capturing audio and video music nor can I get my e-mail, thanks to Windows Mail, the e-mail application in Vista. So I am seriously considering reverting to Vista and from the comments I have read on MS KB and various forums, this should be possible if 1) I have a Windows.old file saved on the system while upgrading to Vista or 2) I have the offic…

by Guest Talal Itani- 32 replies

Every time I install in a new device in my PC, XP creates a new restore-point, and saves old files. Is there a way to keep XP from creating these restore points? I need this because I frequently install new yet similar devices. Thanks.

Can I restore data to NTFS which were backed up to FAT32?
by Guest pat_mc- 8 replies
After purchasing a 500GB external HDD recently, I have just created a full image of my Win XP laptop's 40GB C drive (the only partition it has). Since the internal HDD is NTFS and the external one is FAT32 I wonder if I am actually as safe as I had believed to be. Concretely, I wish to know: 1) In case of system crash can I simply copy the entire image back to my laptop's internal HDD to re-create the system state at the time of backup? 2) Will the fact that the storage media have different formats affect data integrity in any way? 3) Which conversion steps - if any - are necessary to achieve a full system recovery after copying the image back onto the…

Re: Windows xp system restore
by Guest Bill in Co.- 0 replies

Re: Windows xp system restore I should have added, the assumption being that System Restore does not rewrite the entire hard disk partition - which I'm sure it doesn't. And it seems unlikely it would be able to selectively overwrite all the sectors containing those saved (monitored) files during the restore operation. But seems much more likely that it simply knows to erase them (as files) as a final housekeeping routine, upon restoration. I downloaded Internet Lock 5.1 (Trial Version). It works great at blocking IE and Firefox, but you can get around it by going to Start --> Search --> Search the Internet (on the bottom left of the screen). I can't figure out how to block this, any help would be appreciated.

by Guest Robert Bodling- 2 replies

I have been having a problem with my computer where I get a program (any program and more than one different type) that has fail to respond, when I press the [X} to close the program or attempt to close or terminate the program through Task Manager, it will give me the window to [end] and still fails to end... no matter how many times I tell it to end. Several times it has taken many attempts to get the non-responsive program to close... why?

Windows XP SP2 Windows Media Player 10 Internet connection Verizon DSL Problem: When I try to access a radio station in Windows media player 10 I keep getting the message "Reconnecting attempt x". This occurs when I select WMP Fast. Selecting Slow works ok. I recently removed files from the registry to clean out all traces of Norton/Symantec entries and removed all files relating to same. Prior to this activity the problem did not exist. Also, I was running WMP 9. I downloaded WMP 10 in the hopes that this would solve the problem. It did not. I used restore the system to a prior state, ( I created a restore point prior to working on the Registry).…

hi, i'm helping a friend with the following problem : he has tried to install xp sp2 but it crashed before it finished (microsoft artikel id 885523 (followed the steps described there before proceding)) i uninstalled sp2 with the repair console and now i'm trying to reinstall sp2. after the setup has backed up the files, made a registry backup and made a repair point the setup stops with the error : "cannot install the catalogue files" i translated this from the dutch error "kan catalogusbestanden niet installeren" so it's possible the translation is not perfect. New hard drive
by Guest Stumpy- 22 replies

Our old Win XP box has a 40 GB drive that is <3% free. Removed as many files as I could, then gave up. Bought a 160 Gb Maxtor IDE ATA for $70 at Fry's and installed it. Partitioned and formatted it, then tried to move the whole "shared documents" folder from the C: drive to the new F: drive. It won't go. Just makes a shortcut on the new drive. This folder has 16 Gb of Mp3s and alot of photos. Seems like a logical choice to move all of the shared files onto the drive and then make it the default drive for music and pictures. What am I doing wrong? Got any suggestions to take the load off of the packed C: drive?

Putting previously purchased copy of XP on another laptop
by Guest army25B- 3 replies

Hey all- I am wanting to upgrade to a new laptop. The one I want has Vista on it. I have already purchased my own copy of XP home, which works great. I have no desire to upgrade to Vista. Whats the deal with registering with microsoft when I try to install the copy of XP I am currently using on the new machine? I know you have to register, and MS has some type of DRM that keeps track of what machine its on. Don't know if its the SID or a hardware footprint, ect. I would want to remove their entry as it pertains from this laptop and be able to do a clean install on the new one. I would only want to use the new laptop. Anyone know if I can do this with…

Microsoft Agent & questions
by Guest Mambo- 7 replies

I'm trying to get an application to work that uses the Microsoft Agent. The Agent's balloon comes up but is silent, no speech, other sound effect with it work. I had re-imaged my hard drive with an image I created in 2003 right after a clean install XP Home on a dual boot computer. I installed the program after that date so don't have a working copy installed from this image. I've done all the updates except Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer 7 because I'm on a 15 inch monitor; 800x600 and the two 7 versions just don't look like windows... unless there's 'skins' for them out there. The main issue, no sound from the agent. Back in 2003 I think…

I ran the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor on a friend's computer that was running XP Pro. (Which computer WAS working fine.) While the test was running, I got a black screen crash. Now the computer won't run. Sometimes it starts, then freezes, sometimes it looks like it starts but there's all kinds of flashing, moving junk in the Windows login screen (video is on the mobo), sometimes it won't boot at all. Now what??? Looks like my friend lost a computer, and I lost a friend. I suppose this means that computer is not compatible with Vista...

I have a toshiba laptop with xp home installed. I had removed the fax component for some forgoten reason and now when I try and re-install it the system goes through the install process and says "finished" however when checking the windows components section of ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS it is not installed. In addition when selecting the 'fax' option to re-install through the services dialogue box it says that zero space is required for the files...I do not want to re-install the whole operating system as have nowhere to back up my files...is there …

Outlook Express file association
by Guest Chuck Moore- 3 replies

I am running XP Home and the version of Outlook Express that comes with it. If a file is sent with an attachment .PDF and I double click on the attachment to open it, I get a no file association message with instructions to go to Control Panel, file associations and establish the relationship there. When I do this, .PDF is defined to open with the Acrobat reader. If I save the attachment to my hard drive and double click on it, it immediately opens it with the Acrobat reader. How do I fix this problem with OE? Thanks Chuck Moore

Getting rid of "Found new hardware"
by Guest Stuart Grant- 3 replies

A few weeks ago, my computer started showing a message "Found new ardware - Image", although I had not installed any new hardware, and then started the "Found new hardware wizard". Cancelling it gives a reproachful message that your new hardware may not work. I have tried letting the wizard runs but after a while it reports that it cannot find what it is looking for. From the name "Image", I thought it might be relate to my Brother MFC 640CW, which has a scan function, but the software was installed months ago and I have used the Scan function occasionally with no problem. I have now got in the habit of cancelling the wizard after every start-up b…
