I must be missing something somewhere. I want to backup at least 40 gig and apparently I can't because of a limitation imposed by FAT 32. I am not overly techy, but it is hard to imagine, considering the size of most hard drives these days, that there is not some other way of backing up large amounts of data. Thanks for any help.

by Guest Telstar- 8 replies

System Restore is on on all of my drives. Yet, I only get the previous day's restore point...all others are erased every single day. This is not how it used to work, and it is very bothersome. I tried turning it off and back on again and it did not change the behavior. Further suggestions are welcome!

System Restore - but uninstall the undesired program first?
by Guest Bill in Co.- 22 replies

We've covered some of the relative advantages and disadvantages of using System Restore and ERUNT here before, but I have a specific question relating to the usage of System Restore: Since System Restore tries to keeps track of file and registry *changes* to your system, and since these changes can really add up, the more you do *between restore points* (especially for a large program), here is my question: Let's suppose you first create a restore point. And then you install a program you want to try out. And then you decide you don't want that program, and want to uninstall it *and* have the system returned to as clean a state as it was before…

Desktop Background Listbox problem.....
by Guest JimTheAverage- 10 replies
When I right click on my XP Pro SP2 desktop and select Properties>Desktop the Background listbox doesn't just list the files in %SystemRoot%/Web/Wallpaper. It lists those plus every bmp file in the My Pictures folder and sub folders. I searched the registry for "wallpaper" and found that HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion's WallpaperDir setting was in fact set to %SystemRoot%/Web/Wallpaper. So I dno't get where the other files are coming from. The problem here is that this is a new build and I haven't even started to put in my THOUSANDS of images into My Pictures yet. When I do, if this behavior persists, it will most likely freeze …

Getting the "site Code"
by Guest Uzi Barzilai- 1 reply

Hi, On a Dell machine (P4 XP home edition) I'm trying to activate a product. The program supplies, on initial run, a "site code" and I'm to supply the matching "site key" On this machine the "site code" returns blank. It has to be my computer because it works on two others. Granted, on ONE of the two others I had to turn off, temporarily, the AVG A/V. Needless to say I tried the same, on this one. Any idea? Thanks, Uzidengineer

I have a desktop that is connected to a printer using a usb cord. It runs Windows XP Home Edition. The printer works fine. My laptop is Windows Vista and it shows the desktop computer and I can access files on it like it is supposed to work. When you click on the printer though it says CANNOT CONNECT, ACCESS IS DENIED. I have the printer set up for sharing, but the laptop keeps saying this when you click on the printer icon in the desktops folder. Any ideas? Thanks

Group Outlook emails with Outlook and not Word in the taskbargrouping
by Guest sjurbanowski@hotmail.com- 5 replies

I am using Office Outlook 2003 on Windows XP Professional. Until this morning, all my open Outlook windows, such as New messages, drafts, replies, forwards, used to be grouped with the Outlook icon in my taskbar (set to Microsoft Word as my default email editor). All of a suddent they are being grouped with Microsoft Word in the taskbar. I would like to change it back so they get grouped with Outlook and kept separate from non-email Word documents. I've looked at options in Word and Outlook, but have not been able to figure out how to do this. Everything else (Excel, IE, etc.) gets grouped as before. It is only the email edit windows that have changed. I've…

Long pause on startup
by Guest Michel S.- 1 reply

Hello, Since yesterday, my system "pauses" upon booting. After the welcome screen, the screen is blacked out with only the mouse pointer in the middle. This remains for 1:30 to 2:00 minutes before the desktop appears. Before yesterday, there was no such pause. No program was installed in the mid-time nor any change to hardware of Vista's configuration were done. Any idea ? Thanks.

I just built a new XP machine with a brand new copy of XP Pro, SP2 and went today to Microsoft to do an Automatic Update. It downloaded 90 updates but then loaded zero. Windows Explorer Not Refreshing After File Delete or Move
by Guest Meryl- 5 replies

I found this KB article that describes my problem, but it did not resolve it as I already had this in place. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823291/en-us Are there any other solutions? Using WinXP Pro with SP2. This has been going on for a while. Also another problem came up recently. I could not find a KB article on this one. I think it's a Win XP issue because it happens in every app except Office. So that clues me in that it's the OS. If I open Windows Explorer from any application OTHER than Microsoft Office applications, the list of files is unsorted. Whenever I need to attach a file, download a file and tell the application where to put it., et…

XP Home SP2: RPC refuses to start with error 5
by Guest badpazzword- 0 replies

As I was preparing to repartition my hard disk (something I haven't yet got around to do), I decided to run a chkdsk run on my Toshiba laptop, an Equium M70-272. Well, the chkdsk lasted four hours, one of which was spent fiddling with "security descriptors" (or similar) of file #9, three of which were spent fiddling with "security information" (or similar) of each and any file in the partition. As a result, a number of problems popped up, and after a quick investigation I found that the culprit is in RPC now refusing to start with error 5, Access Denied. To save some time: * Yes, I did make a system restore point just before the chkdsk. And yes, S…

I have a few directory on my drives with names like this, e351ac1256f82aa65c632996. Another is, 48edb3c370aa660ddf. What are these things? Where do they come from? Each on has a file in it that reads like an event log. For example, one reads: === Verbose logging started: 12/6/2006 1:09:01 Build type: SHIP UNICODE 3.01.4000.2435 Calling process: C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe === MSI © (A4:E0) [01:09:01:750]: Resetting cached policy values MSI © (A4:E0) [01:09:01:750]: Machine policy value 'Debug' is 0 MSI © (A4:E0) [01:09:01:750]: ******* RunEngine: ******* Product: g:\48edb3c370aa660ddf\msxml6.msi ******* Action: …

Discrepency in file numbers copied during My Docs backup
by Guest A Taxed Mind- 1 reply
I have backed up My Docs by Copying and pasting to an external drive. However there is a discrepancy beween the original and the copy of around 24 megs and more importantly there are 2 files missing from the copy. I can't work out where the missing files are or should be, although I do notice that some folders have a very small discrepancy in "size" (but not "Size on disk"), but recopying them makes no difference. Any thoughts as to how I can determine what files might be missing, how I can find them, etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance (sorry if this has appeared somewhere, I think the original got lost during upload)

Script error in IE
by Guest klberry@neo.rr.com- 3 replies

My aunt has an approx 5 year old PC running XP. She uses AT&T DSL with her e-mail running in an AT&T Yahoo IE window rather than Outlook or OE. Everything was working fine. We installed the Powerpoint Viewer. Then when she tried to open e-mail messages (actually OPEN - she can view them in the preview pane), open attachments or send messages she gets script errors. We uninstalled the Powerpoint Viewer, but nothing improved. I had her uncheck "display a notification about every script error" and check "disable script debugging" in her IE/Tools/Internet Options. Now she doesn't get the script error messages, but when she tries to do the e-mail operat…
