Windows XP reinstall
by Guest jonmsm@googlemail.com- 10 replies

Hi there, my laptop is a second hand IBM x30 which has its oem copy of windows XP... which is dying a sorry death thanks to a variety of viruses. I have attempted to clean the computer but have come to the conclusion that it would be much more time effective to just copy my files off, scan them on my other computer and then reinstall windows. The problem I have is I don't have the IBM install disk. Now the laptop obvioulsy has its own lisence attached to the case (microsoft sticker on the underside with product lisence key). I do have a non OEM copy of Windows XP with Service pack 2 (i.e not a manufacturer or machine model specific install disk but a microso…

System Restore - Number of Restore Points
by Guest Crazy Horse- 3 replies
Recently I checked the number of restore points I'd accumulated and found only 8 extending over the past three days, including today. It seems to me, in the past, I've seen more restore points extending further back in time. The slider is set to Max [12%(553MB)]. Perhaps the issue is that I have a rather small partition, and I'm running out of room and the system is only going to use 12%, thus affording only a limited number of restore point. Any feedback would be most welcome. Thanks.

Cpu Program Rotation?
by Guest Ronis- 1 reply

I have XP Pro x64 on a quad core proc. When I am playing everquest, I notice on the Task Manager that the different everquest sessions are being rotated to different cores, and occasionally, they ALL end up on the SAME core, resulting in everything freezing. Ive tried to manually set affinity via the task manager but its not allowed. Im using wineq2 and have the innate eq affinity setting to off. Im told by tech support its an XP issue not Everquest or WinEQ2. So my question is, how do I STOP the OS from rotating my multiple instances of the same game around and force them onto discrete cores?

Switching among programs sometimes gets klunky in XP SP2
by Guest mama@mia.mamamia- 6 replies

Mine is an XP SP2 machine, 1 gig of memory, very stable, no viruses or spyware, been running fine for two years. About a week ago, I noticed that sometimes, I can't determine when exactly, I'll get weird behavior when trying to switch between multiple open programs on the computer. Normally, I might be running Firefox (2.0.0.12) and Thunderbird, plus maybe one or two other normal programs, like Windows or Excel. Normally, if you want to switch to a different application, you click on the application in the taskbar, and the window with that application opens up in front of other applications, and becomes the active window. However, in the past week, I'v…

Svchost.exe using 50% of cpu
by Guest hedera- 5 replies

I've seen several threads on cases where SVCHOST.EXE was using 100% of CPU. Has anyone see it use 50% of CPU?? I have a WinXP Pro system, updated using automatic Windows Update, running ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite which checks for both viruses and spyware weekly. Earlier this week I also updated SpyBot and LavaSoft AdAware Personal, and ran both of them. I'm behind a NAT router. Yesterday I noticed that 1 of my multiple SVCHOST.EXE processes was using 50% of CPU - I'm sensitive to CPU because I run BOINC for Rosetta@home and I expect BOINC to be using 95% of CPU. It's still doing this today, and I checked it during boot before Rosetta …

how to alphabeticaly sort files in bat file?
by Guest ILiya- 4 replies
I have file archives that need to be extracted in sequence based on the archive names. To do this, I think I need to iterate through all files in archives directory, pickup those falling into archives pattern (like "WeeklyUpdates????????.zip", sort them alphabeticaly (probably in a separate file) and then iterate through the file feeding them to unzip utility. But I have no idea how to implement this in bat file. Thanks in advance.

Mouse is multiselecting
by Guest GKW in GA- 2 replies

Whenever I point to something in Word, Intrnet Explorer, Excel or whatever, it selects several paragraphs, sometimes 3 or 4 of them or in Excel, clicking in a cell will select 5 or 6 adjacent cells. Sometimes in IE 7, selecting a word will select the whole page. I've tried switching mouses and keyboards to no avail, so there is some setting, apparently I've triggered. How can I stop this and what causes it. It just started last night

How to disable InstallShield's Update Manager?
by Guest Bill in Co.- 8 replies
Is there anyway to disable this blasted thing? (And by disable, I also mean NO annoying icons reminding me of such). I'm on dialup, and I really don't want it there at all - period. From what I've heard so far, it looks like maybe renaming "agent.exe" (or deleting it, but I'd rather not) might do it, but then again, I heard upon rebooting it might get put back. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm getting close. :-) Any ideas out there on how to? (and not whether I should, but just HOW to)

Ongoing Computer Corruption issues
by Guest Ted- 3 replies

With the help of several people on this Forum I've been working on the problem described below. I created a slipstreamed XP/SP2 Bootable CD and tried to Repair Windows. The process of repair proceded as expected to normal conclusion but did not correct the problem. Does anyone have a suggestion or do I have to rebuild the computer (which in my opinion may not work either)? By the way, what is the Indows Forms Parking Window? The last time I shut down the computer I got a message that Windows Forms Parking Window was not responding. Thanks for your help. Ted Here's the original problem description: The computer is running Windows XP Home Edition.…

Was trying to tighten up security on client -- not realising that Administrator is not exempt ... so would like to ensure I have undone everything by re-installing the original settings. Prob Now unable to see any file/printer sharing on server. Of course network wizard requires a floppy drive to copy settings -- not usb flashdrive or CD-R ... Hasn't this been updated?

Windows Administrator Paswword
by Guest Ted- 8 replies

I have created a Slipstream XP/SP2 Bootable CD ROM to repair a corrupted computer. When I boot from the CD and specify I want to do a repair, the system asks me for an Administrator Password. I do not know it nor does anyone else in the organization. I removed a Password Jumper as suggested in the Dell Manual which is supposed to erase any passwords. That does not work. Does anyone know how to get around this password requirement? Thanks. Ted

i read the post, tried few things, it doesn't work, got windows xp home, keep getting message windows\system32\config\system, got a fry's build pc, warranty is gone, i already tried going to bios and making sure the first boot is the cd, what i get is: please select recovery option: restore system to factory settings (i done it twice before, it wiped everything out, and i don't want to loose the files) that is the only option i get, the restore software/cd is from wasay technologies, any other way i can get around this? as far as i know, i haven't backed up the files.
