How to fix/reinstall Display Properties Applet?
by Guest Darkeforce- 7 replies
I cannot open the Display Properties from my desktop (right-click); the window either flickers open for a split second, and then vanishes, or else nothing happens. When I try to open it from the Control Panel -> Appearances and Themes category, it will only open if I select "Choose a screensaver" or "Change the screen resolution". And even then, once open, the applet will crash if I click the "Themes" or "Desktop" tabs. The problem started when I installed the drivers and software for a new ATI Radeon video card. I've gone through extensive technical service with them, and they concluded that it was a problem with Windows. I want to try to repair or …

[OT] Counts on a Link Away from My Web Page
by Guest W. Watson- 1 reply

Maybe someone knows the answer to this question or can direct me to a NG more appropriate. I have a web page with a link to Google Picas (Photo Albums). I would like to know how many visitors use the link. My web host, Ipower, provides a counter for how many times people have visited my page, but I'm not sure it's possible to count how many times someone has clicked a link away from my pages. Ipower seems to have difficulty even understanding my question. -- Wayne Watson (Nevada City, CA) Web Page: <speckledwithStars.net>

My Computer--Very Slow to Populate with Harddrives
by Guest W. Watson- 1 reply
I've rebooted my XP Pro machine several times today thinking that the slowness of My Computer was caused by something to do with my Pogo RadioYourWay Tivo-like radio. It sort of looks like a Ipod, and has a USB port that allows me to download (or upload) to it's HD. However, I do not believe I've plugged it in during the latest boot. I just tried My Computer, and it's window is showing little signs of life. Any idea what may be causing this? If I bring other windows up, it produces their contents, and easily lets me operate within them. I can see now that after maybe two minutes it is populated. It's peeking out from behind another window, but if click …

My computer crashed 3 months ago and had use the restore disc that came with my computer. The computer works ok now except for deframentation. I have just installed Windows Live One Care which seems operate ok. Did a tune up and during the tune up it supposedly defrags the disc, however under the heading it states "Unknown error prevented tune-up from performing this task. Try running tune up again". This was one of the reasons that I tried the 90 day free trial of this Windows Live One Care. Previously ,prior to installing Windows Live One Care I had found this problem when going to defragmentation on my computer. I had hoped One Care would eliminate t…

Remote Desktop: Any Hope For Bigger Screens?

I've grown addicted to the 19x12 screen I put in at one of my client sites - to the extend that I find myself driving there instead of working from home vis Remote Desktop. Is there anything here - or in the works - that would support Remote Desktop at sizes larger than 16 x 12? How about multiple monitors? -- PeteCresswell

Logging off with batch job running
by Guest simonc- 2 replies

I usually run backups using a .bat file. My backup programme requires Administrator privileges, and normally I use Runas to run the bat file as Administrator while logged in as a different user. The backup job runs in the background without affecting other work. However, if I am logged on as Administrator when I run the bat file this sets the job running in a command window and I can't log off as the administrator and log on as a different user without killing the back up job. Now, following advice in this news group, I've been experimenting with starting batch jobs invisibly with a VBScript. My question is: if I start the batch job using vbs while logg…

Lsass.exe-System Error
by Guest Ushnell- 6 replies

A while after utilizing a computer I just bought from a neighbor that had Windows XP installed on it, I came to realize that it was infected with spy-ware and the sort and I decided to go to war by looking through the registry to see their unfamiliar key names and using Spybot to find their exact storage locations such as their CLSID-Inproc Server . This really kept me busy and I enjoyed it but it led me to do something I totally regret:I decided to look into the unexpanded SAM (Security Accounts Manager) key in Regedit by setting up permissions to get Full control of it so I can read its contents; which I have never done since using Windows. I was d…

XP home When I open "my computer" from the desktop it opens with a single pane, with the main drive/s letters, Shared documents and Sony documents. If I click on the "Folders" icon on the menu it then gives split screen with full tree on the left and drive/s letters on the right side...which is what I wish to happen by default when openning "My Computer". I have tried folder options via control panel but unable to do it. TIA Terry

"Send to" doesn't open e-mail form
by Guest Mike Burke- 7 replies

I originally thought this might be an Outlook problem, but I've since decided that there may be an Windows XP setting preventing me from right clicking a file and using "Send to - Mail Recipient". I'm using Windows XP Professional, Office 2003 and Outlook is set as my default mail program (Unless Windows Live Messenger hijacked it without leaving traces.) When I click on a picture I get the "resize" dialog box, but no e-mail form ever opens up. When I click on a text file, no e-mail form shows up. have switched between Outlook's default mail form and using Word 2003 as the default editor, and neither chice makes any difference; I still don't get the form.…

Task bar blank/other operational problems
by Guest Ted- 4 replies
The computer is running Windows XP Home Edition. The computer was accidentally "rebooted" by turning the power off and back on. Since then the operational environment has been corrupted as follows: When booting up, the typical logon window no longer displays the icons and names of the various users defined on the system. Instead, a small "Log On To Windows" box appears with the name of one of the users. Once logged on, the Task Bar is blank/white from left to right except the clock is showing. There is no Start button. If a window is minimized it disappears behind the white task bar area and is unretrievable. If I press the Windows key on the keyboard, …
