I have a three machine network, two desktops running XP Home and a wireless laptop running XP pro. Two of the machines see each other and can access files between the two. The third machine has a shared printer and we can access it from any of the machines. However when I try to get to a shared folder on that machine I get the message telling me I do not have access permission and there is not enough server storage to perform the command. Confuses the heck out of me it does.... Can anyone help?

Hi I have a problem with Performance Monitor in windows. I have added some performance objects and under each I have number of counters. I can view the counters in System Monitor window live when I have added the counters to the window. But if I add those performance objects and counters to my Counter Log, then these objects and counters do not appear in the drop down list for Performance Object. Do you know the reason for this? The custom performance objects are implemented in C++. As said there is no problem to view these custom objects and counters live, but they do not appear in the list of performance objects for the performance log, even I have added…

I have been given an application at work to test and find that it makes two additional entries to the System Path. The default entry is: %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem however this application add two further entries to its own location. What is the significance of this and does it matter? Thanks

video locks up
by Guest Jeff- 1 reply

I have a HP Pavilion a264w PC, that runs Windows XP Media Center. Recently, I have been having problems with the video (on board Nvidia GeForce4 MX) locking up the computer. If I go into Safe Mode, everything works fine. If I boot into Normal Mode, it locks up everytime. There is no new software installed that I can think of off the top of my head. I tried a System Restore, but it still locks up. I have reinstalled the original video driver that came with the system, and that did not help. I also went to the HP and Nvidia websites and downloaded/installed their latest video drivers, and that did not help either. I even went into msconfig and disabl…

.DLL error
by Guest Cbarton- 5 replies
I keep getting an error on a computer whenever I start it up. It says "unable to locate/load c:/windows/system32/nvaxgmgv.dll The user brought it to me because his kids got a virus on it. Well, they got about 10 viruses on it, not 1, and I'm sure that one of those has changed the registry setting. I have no idea what this is, or how to fix it in the registry. I cannot even locate the system32 file in the registry. Also, I really don't like messing with the registry unless I'm 100% sure what to do. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks. -- Cbarton

Toolbars: Advice Please
by Guest Dermot- 9 replies

I am seeking to clear my desktop of items I use daily. I am considering using Tololbars to organise the items in categories and locate the toolbars around my desktop. I am seeking to gain a clearer understanding of Toolbar behaviour. When I right click the taskbar, and create a new toolbar everything is fine. If I choose to remove the taskbar, I right click the taskbar, and uncheck the toolbar. Question 1 What happens to the toolbar when it is uncheck in the taskbar listing, can I recheck it to enable....or am I permanently removing it and need to recreate it. .......this would annoy me as If I go to the trouble of creating a toolbars and want t…

What do you think of these symptoms?
by Guest Kieron Capehorn- 3 replies
Hi I think I need to format my hard drive and reinstall Windows on my machine, but I thought I'd post my symptoms here in case anyone has any less drastic suggestions. My laptop is incredibly slow when loading up. My first instinct was to run msconfig and remove some of the programs from my startup list. When I tried to run msconfig, I get the message "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006). Click on OK to terminate the application". When I try to run my antivirus software (Sophos), nothing happens and my machine freezes and has to be restarted. All of this happens when I am in safe mode as well as in normal mode. When I tr…

Windows shutdown
by Guest Bode237- 3 replies

When I try to shutdown or restart my Windows XP home edition, it clears all of the icons and task bar, then freezes with just the background being viewed. I have let it set for up to an hour and it doesn't go past that point. I would appreciate any advise on this subject. I am for the most part computer literate so I should be able to follow any simple to semi-advanced instructions. Thanks

Recognizing an external drive when rebooting
by Guest Phil Rabichow- 20 replies

Hi All: I have WinXP Pro SP-2. I have 2 external drives labeled D & E that are hooked up thru USB 2.0 ports. I have a drive imaging program (True Image) that should restore from one of my external drives to my C drive. However, it hangs during the reboot process. I'm wondering if it's because it can't recognize the external drive before Windows boots up. ( I don't expect an answer here on how to use True Image, as it's not the right forum). But I would like to know if Windows should recognize the external drive during the reboot process. -- Thank you in advance. Phil

Windows Explorer not loading
by Guest Henri Fournier- 1 reply

I have a client with a Toshiba Tecra running WinXP SP2 connected to SBS 2003 Prem server. After the client logs on, anything that loads Windows Explorer (My Computer, My Documents, Control Panel, etc) results two in "Windows Explorer has encountered an error" messages. However, the user can start Word and navigate to his My Documents and open files, just not through Explorer. When I logon as Admin, everything works as expected and I can browse the users "My Documents" without issue. I tried using msconfig to start up with all non MS services and startups disabled, but still the same error for that user. I'm guessing that there's some corruption in t…

Softare: WindowsXP Pro PCs (latest patches) / Windows2003 Server network Hi Any idea why my PCs stop talking to each other correctly after about 30 minutes? There is something weird going on. I have two PS - a desktop and a laptop. They are both on the same Domain. But why is it that after a while (say 30 minutes sometimes longer) my desktop suddenly stops being able to "see" my Laptop? When I try to navigate to the laptop from the desktop through Windows Explorer using: => My Network Places > Entire Network > OurDomainName > LaptopName there is a very long pause and finally it comes back with a dialog-box saying "Connecting to Lapto…

When I try to download a photo from my camera via USB I've started getting the message, "Windows Picture Acquisition Wizard has encountered a problem and has to close" but it doesn't say what the problem is. I've made sure the WIA Service is running and I've replaced the WIAACMGR.EXE file with one from another PC but it didn't fix the problem. Any other ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Ken Dunn - Lakewood, OH

"Edit" is standard for opening programs instead of "Open"
by Guest Patrik- 1 reply

After I cleared my computer from a virus the default for a program when I try to start it has changed from "Open" to "Edit". That goes for programs that I try to start from [start -> Run], [start -> All Programs] and directly from the Program Files folder. The only time I can start a program is if I right click the program icon and chose "Open". In this menu the "Edit" command is in Bold text and seem to be the default command used by windows when I try to access the program. What is does is that is opens my Word program because Word is set to my default editing program. How do I reset the default command from "edit" to "open" so that I can start…

Corrupted System files

Ray and I have a "computer ministry" helping older/elderly persons with minor computer problems, upgrading, etc. We also occasionally furnish older computers to the poor who have no other way of obtaining a "window to the future." We have been working with an older computer (HP 8760c, 128MB RAM, WinXP Home Edition SP 2) that was top-of-the-line in 1999 and is still running (barely) and still online "off and on." It has never had an antivirus program installed. When we installed AVAST! Free a couple of days ago, it found 131 trojans, viruses, etc. All infected files were moved to the Quarantine chest, and it now indicates that the following are system fi…

I recently installed an Epson CX7400 on my XP system. The printer and scanner portions worked for about 2 weeks. Then one day when I turned on my computer the scanner portion no longer was operable although the printer was fine. After contacting Epson and uninstalling and reinstalling several times, I still have no scanner that works. Device Manager shows a conflict. Epson says it's a computer issue. Dell says its a software issue. Anyone have any ideas? -- dufftt
