Software restrict policies
by Guest Jim- 2 replies
I am creating a new GPO for Software restrictions. I have set the default rule to "Software will not run, regardless of the access rights of the user." We are creating a desktop image that we know exactly what applications will be allowed to run. I figured this was a perfect candidate for blocking all applications. I am testing out the GPO. I have created a Hash Rule for Roxio Classic Creator and set that rule to Unrestricted. I go to click on the Shortcut for Roxio and I get a message saying that that Roxio executable is blocked by the SRP. I go to the Event Log and see this: Event Type: Warning Event Source: Software Restriction Policies Event…

IE dehanced? 1 2
by Guest davegb- 27 replies
I'm using IE for a while, trying it out. I haven't used it in a long time, and I'm finding that other than tabbed browsing, it's far less user friendly than it used to be. I've searched for options to fix these things, but haven't found most of what I need. Maybe some of you more experienced users know fixes? When I open web pages from my launcher, they come up in a new window instead of a new tab. I've set IE to open new web pages from other programs in a new tab, but this doesn't seem to work. Is it my launcher (Executor) or is it IE? No refresh button anymore? I have to F5 or use the menu? Can't find one if it's there. Looked under "Customize" and everywh…

Article: Why Windows XP should be available until Windows 7
by Guest On the Bridge- 22 replies

Look I am not a vista basher anymore... Vista can work "well enough" if you have a very fast computer and you are careful.. and of course you have SP1... I still cant use vista for my heavy duty geek stuff.. its too slow for my taste. But even if I get a 8 core machine with 16 gb ram, I will still be dualbooting Vista with XP, until and IF Windows7 is very good. Article http://www.itworld.com/Comp/2218/windows-xp-vista-dr-080218/ I quote here what I have said in the past... it seems that I was right again... "Of course, Microsoft knows the general public can't stand Vista. After trying to deal with companies like Acer and Dell that forced the o…

Win XP Pro - IP Address won't auto renew when changing sites
by Guest tmmiller@orbits.net- 1 reply
I have an end user who uses wireless at her office. When she shuts down and goes home, she will connect up to her home wireless however she will still have her office IP address. (It's not static). She can do an ipconfig /release /renew just fine and it works, but she would like it to auto renew/change when starting the PC. I have removed and re-added TCP/IP and removed/ re-added wireless drivers. I am at a loss as i've never seen it not refresh the IP address when powering up the PC. Any help is very much appreciated.

Difference Between Local Printer vs Network Printer
by Guest Tau_Ceti_2- 9 replies
I'm going to be setting up a few printers to share in a medium sized office, on several XP-Pro machines. (The printers have their own network card). But I've never been really clear on the difference between: local printer vs network printer. To add to the confusion I even hear some people say "I connected a network printer, locally" ! Now correct me if I am wrong, but this is what I understand thus far: A "local printer" can connect to WIN-XP in 1 of 3 ways: 1) USB port 2) standard printer port 3) through the network lines (using TCP/IP protocol) So... if I can connect the printer "locally" to the PC's using method 3 (network lines) wh…

My dad's computer no longer shows application icons in the taskbar when minimized. I've done a full virus scan and spyware scan but they still don't show up. What else do I look for? He said he thought this happened after some automatic update a few weeks back. I googled this but didn't find anything.

Reset tattoo settings etc
by Guest UselessUser- 3 replies
Hi, We have some XP machines which have been tattooed and we are looking at sorting this.. We have discovered the secedit tool, but this only resets local policies, not registry tweaks... I have also discovered the ntuser.dat file in the default user folder seems to be modified. I have consequently deleted this and now all new logins get a default ntuser.dat (Where is this generated and is this a problem not having one in the default user folder?).. Is there any other registry location where tweaks can be manually set such as HKEY Local Machine, and if so how can I reset this, or view the tweaks made easily? Any help would be appreciated..

How to remove Service Pack Restore Files in XP?
by Guest Head4Heigjts- 1 reply

KB290402 tells us how to do this with Win2000. XP is a bit different and the Registry key quoted is not quite the same. MS Support in US said due to regional variations in XP, they wouldn't help because I'm in the UK. A definitive answer would be most welcome! Thanks.

Reserved system space?
by Guest zulu- 4 replies
My two USB2 hard drives both, according to *Diskeeper* have a sizeable chunk of *Reserved System Space* On the assumption that System Restore was responsible, I disabled it for both these drives. I then transferred the contents of the smaller 250Gb drive to the larger 500Gb one. I then formatted the empty drive (not quick format) as it was i.e.NTFS , 512 sectors. Diskeeper _still_ shows the same unusable volume... What is going on here? How can I recover this space? ....should I leave well alone even? (why?) -- ¦zulu¦

Monitor display problem
by Guest Bill W- 3 replies

Most of the time when I restart my computer, the display will come up with a problem. It is okay horizontally, but the screen is compressed to about 2/3 the size of the screen vertically. Everything works okay and everything is displayed, it's just that that it's not stretched vertically. I've installed latest drivers. Sometimes, it will display correctly after several reboots. Thanks for your help.

by Guest cherish- 3 replies

Hi, When attempting to install the drivers for a USB ADSL modem I get *error loading newdev.dll*. Here's what I've done so far - removed the newdev.dll from System32 and replaced it with another I downloaded - didn't work Downloaded the SP2 from MS - installed, rebooted - that didn't work either. Searched MS site for specific issue - no go. Searched Google - lots of hits nothing viable. As of this writing my new PC is sitting on my dest unused and functioning mainly as a planter. A very nice and powerful planter. Can someone :please: help me resolve this issue? Thank you so much. jj

Can I upgrade from 2000 to XP without formatting the HD?
by Guest Robert S- 10 replies
We have 3 PCs in our office that are running Win2000. A number of applications no longer run on Win2000 (eg PC-cillin). We wish to upgrade these to XP. Is it possible to do this using the OEM XP installation disks that came with the PCs? If not, is there any way that we can do this? I tried it on a dummy installation of Win2000 and there was no upgrade option when I booted off an XP disk. --
