Regulary can't delete folders
by Guest Poster Matt- 6 replies

Hi, I regulary can't delete a folder from Explorer, I get the error: 'Can't delete FOLDER_NAME it is being used by another process. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again'. This happens with a wide veriety of folders and, after a while or a reboot, I can delete the folder as normal. Now I would expect this to happen when a file in the folder, or in a sub-folder of it, is open and in use by some software - but it's not, and I have checked in 'task manager' to make sure that the software's process is ended (because if the process has stayed alive this would explain my problem, but it hasn't). To further confuse me - I have been…

I have been researching this problem but have found no fix. I finally decided to reinstall per. http://bertk.mvps.org/html/reinstall.html But the same condition exists. I am not sure if this is related but when I try to access my router only a partial screen is displayed with no way to access anything on router. There are no router issues accessed from other systems. If anyone knows of a solution I would be very grateful. Thanks. J.

How to I remotely schedule backups on network PCs
by Guest OscarVogel- 2 replies
I need to schedule backups to run once on approximately 30 PCs on the network. Most of the PCs already use task scheduler and ntbackup to backup files to a server. But I need to run a seperate one time backup of particular folders on each of the PCs. I'd like to schedule the one time backups to run at scattered times over this weekend. I'm hoping to avoid physically sitting down at each workstation to schedule the task. I'd like to simply create a batch file and then somehow add a scheduled task without going to each PC. My biggest problem is how to schedule the tasks remotely. Or is there a completely better way to do this? (should I instead sche…

When using the window xp home - backup utility, under system tools, using wizard mode, I select backup all information on this computer. It is suppose to create a systems recovery disk, but the operation always fails. Message is - "The recovery diskett could not be created. Operation aborted" I can use any of the other functions and they work fine, meaning backup; -my documents and setting -everyone's documents and setting, etc. I am backing everything up to an external USB drive. Any help would be appreciated. Also do I need a "recovery disk"? Could I make it another way? Thanks, John

How to kill unwanted services on recovery console?
by Guest vfclists- 3 replies

I am trying to repair a windows system and I want to disable services before windows starts. How do you stop services from the recovery console before you restart windows? Are there some command line tools that will allow you to list them and disable them in the registry before Windows starts? If they can also list a short description of what they do that will be fine. What is the minimal list of services required to boot windows successfully?

what does this BSOD BugCheck actually mean?
by Guest mechphisto@gmail.com- 5 replies
I'm working on a system that always BSOD in a couple of games, but only in certain situations. First, the situation, then what I've done, and finally, the output of the BugCheck. (I'm really hoping there's some answer in the BugCheck I'm missing.) For example, in Battlefield 2, whenever one tries to Alt+Tab out of the game, it always BSOD. Or, if played long enough, (say, an hour) it will often BSOD unprovoked. This ONLY happens in this configuration: When using the ATI 2600XT PCI-x video card on the SATA drive. If I use the onboard NVidia video chip, can't get it to crash. If I use the IDE drive, with the exact same WinXP Pro install, and updates, and dri…

XP Pro SP2 and SLOW search
by Guest Gregg Hill- 2 replies
Hello! I have a friend whose search function in Windows XP Pro SP2 has gotten brutally slow. When he opens the search window and types in a file name or search for text in a file, then clicks Search Now, it appears to hang with nothing in the right-hand pane. If it is left alone, the word "searching" will come up after about five minutes, followed by some results. If he clicks in the window while it is blank, the title bar switches to "not responding" for about five minutes, then it searches. Last week, it worked normally. He said that he was having some problems with MusicMatch Jukebox and removed it, which is when he thinks the problems began. We r…

File Download Window Never Completes
by Guest Rick Hamilton- 1 reply

I cannot download a file from http://www.FMLS.com. Their Tech Support staff is unable to solve the issue. After I search for homes and receive a list, I click the Download button to receive a simple text file. The dialogue "File Download - Security Warning" opens, with three buttons from which to choose: "Open", "Save", "Cancel". If I click "Save", The Open button is greyed out, the Save button changes to a greyed out Open Folder button, and the Cancel button remains available. A piece of paper flies from the Globe icon to the manilla folder icon, and the file never downloads, nor do a receive the Browse dialogue which would allow me to choose a fold…
