by Guest Richard- 0 replies

The drive will not recognize any DVD+or-RW disks which have been written to, not even if the NexxTech did the writting. Commerical disks and DVD-R or DVD+R are read fine. It has no problems writting to new or erased disks and the disks it creates can be read in my other DVD drives. Any ideas? Thanks Richard

Long pause if I click a network resource that is not in service?
by Guest JerryI- 3 replies

I have a home network with three computers and I frequently share resources among the computers. Whenever I click anything that happens to be on a computer that is (temporarily) turned off, I have to wait about 45 seconds for a message that I don't have permission to access that resource before I can proceed. Can I reconfigure anything to eliminate this annoyance? -- JerryI

How to list a service start mode
by Guest Another Brian- 3 replies

I'm working with a service called MVFS. For reasons that I don't understand, it does not appear in the Control Panel Services applet. I'm trying to find some way to list its start mode. I've tried looking through the options of the sc command, but the only thing I can see is how to set the start mode of the service. Is that any command that will tell me what the start mode is? Brian

Unexpected file and application deletions
by Guest John Earle- 7 replies

Can anyone throw any light on this bizarre problem? In fact I have 2 problems which may or may not be related. When I power up my computer it has started going directly into the BIOS setup - not always but about 80% of the time. I exit from this without saving changes and it then boots up in the normal way. The second problem is that when I double click on a desktop icon to start a program, the application opens but I also get a dialogue box headed 'confirm file delete' which sits on top of everything else stopping me from any further clicks until I chose one option inside the box. If I press any of the buttons (yes/no) or even click the cross in th…

Having had to buy a replacement hard disk for my childrens PC and manually loading the manufacturers image I am now unable to restore any of the data backed up by Vista Backup and Restore Centre. Having looked into the problem I understand that my problem can be resolved by rebuilding the index file 'mediaid.bin'. Does anyone know how to do this?

New Windows XP Pro Product Key
by Guest corvettes.rock- 4 replies

I have the original Windows XP Pro disk for my PC, however when I ran into a glitch and needed a reformat, the person who repaired my PC used his volume disk with SP2 on it just for convenience. Ok now on to my question...I just bought a new product key at from Microsoft and tried to use their tool to make the change. When I restarted my computer, my AVG antivirus pitched a fit and said that there was an error and it didn't recognize my license. When I tried to reinstall it, it said I had another antivirus program running...which I don't. I did a file search and a program search to see if I had any other antivirus programs running and could find nothing. I…

I am trying to use the net send command in my network but it is not working. I did the following: 1) Switch on all the messenger services in all the PCs, and the server too. 2) All the PCs can receive their own messages whenever they use their own domain name but every PC can't send to other PCs, that means the service is ON but why the message can't reach other PCs on the network. I am using this command in Dos: net send Sales1 Good Morning Is there anything wrong? Thank you.

Can "Auto Scan" Be Disabled
by Guest HKL- 1 reply

A little info first -- question is about a home computer. Installed XP Upgrade package to machine, which was running Win2000 previously. I have an external Seagate hard drive which is usually turned off, but I turn it on to backup info every now and then. With XP now installed on the computer, when I turn on the external hard drive (HD), the main computer begins "Auto Scan" of the external HD. After 30-60 seconds, it prompts me with a "write fail" message to the effect that not all of the data could be retrieved and that the problem may be with the HD or the network. But in reality, this is not the case. Next time "Auto Scan" appeared when I turned bac…

Can't find files via Search?
by Guest John Brown- 5 replies

Any thoughts on this...was at a mate's XP pc yesterday..we looked for dbx files on his hard drive via Start/Search/All files and folders.../*.dbx. ....whilst this found some old dbx files...the current ones it didn't reveal. He only has one hard drive - drive C so first looked there then looked in My Computer to be sure, and have Show hidden files and folders tricked in Folder Options. Did eventually find them via Maintenance/Store folder...but intrigued as to why they didn't show in Search? Thanks.

Manual offline update
by Guest JClark- 5 replies

Hello, What is the best way to manually update windows xp? I often put together "bare bones" systems for my family members, kids in school, etc. I purchase OEM winXP CDs and install. But it's time consuming, and seems perhaps dangerous, to wait for the downloads when I do a new windows install. I've heard that you can manually update offline. I searched the web and downloaded the Heise script http://www.heise-online.co.uk/security/Update-Vista-and-Office-offline--/news/97355 to do this, but it didn't work for me, since the iso file it created is too big (715MB) to go on a CD. I posted a request for help in their forum as well. Any advice appreciated. Jack

by Guest ULguy- 9 replies

Hello All, A friend of mind owns a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop computer that came with a CD-ROM drive only. I tried to Add a Lite-on DVD-RW burner and had a problem doing so. Here are the details: Original Dell drive (CD-rom) has jumper on "Cable select", IDE conn is "end " of Cable. No audio cable attached (does has vol/headphone jack - odd that it wasn't supplied). The Dell Manual stated in quotes " 8. Ensure that the jumper setting for the new drive is set to "Cable select" (see the documentation that came with the new drive for information). ". However the Lite-on documentation says the jumper should be at either master or slave. Too make a lon…

bios STR / power saving questions
by Guest RJK- 4 replies

After all these years, I've never found a definitive, simple to understand, overall explanation of some of the XP main power saving settings, and the relationship between power saving settings in bios and those in Windows. i.e. I think I read somewhere years ago that that there is some interaction between those in bios and in Windows. re: my bios option "Repost video after STR", what's that for, and do I need it seeing as I have STR, and "power down hd aafter x minutes," etc. set to disabled ? I have ACPI enabled in bios, as I fancy I remember reading a long time ago that Windows needs this to be switched on for parts of its' power saving features …

"The Windows Installer service could not be accessed"
by Guest Mike Kron- 4 replies

Hello, I've had a problem crop up recently on one of my desktops, and I'm wondering if anybody has any inisght into this. Whenever I try to install Skype, I get an error dialogue: "The Windows Installer service could not be accessed." I would think it might have just been a bad installer, but I just got the same error message from a new Photo downloading application during it's install sequence. I did a quick google of this text, and the general advice seems to be that Windows can't find the Windows Installer application, msiexec.exe. I looked in the registry underunder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/MSIServer, and the Im…

backing up data to an external hard drive.
by Guest neophyte6565- 4 replies
I'm a neophyte at this. I've backed up on an external HD all the files I wish to back up using the XP backup tool. This being my first attempt at this exercise, I want to review what I've backed up. When I look in my external drive I see the windows backup file which indicates the size of the data. What I am not able to do is open the folder to confirm exactly what I've backed up. When I right click the icon and click on "open" it gives me the option of restoring the data which I don't want to do. I just want to assure myself that I have backed up the appropriate files. I'm sure there is a process for this but I can't find it. Suggestions please?

Windows Explorer Media File Performance
by Guest Charles Crawley- 4 replies

Hi, I am continually having problems with the performance of Explorer when displaying folders full of video files. Simply, if I select a folder containing, for example, 20 AVI files of around 350MB each, Explorer "hangs" for ages, even if I have the folder View options set to "List". Usually, control eventually returns but sometimes I have to kill off explorer.exe. This occurs even if I have disabled my anti-virus software, to try to speed up the file access. My PC is: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3GHz MSI P35 Platinum Motherboard 2x 1GB Crucial DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX RAM EVGA GeForce 8800GT 512MB KO Western Digital 160GB SATA Drive Western Digital 50…
