Fonts in Application Menus changed
by Guest earlyfilms- 0 replies
Some time ago I added a few new fonts. Suddenly the fonts in all my application menus became enlarged, in a few cases they actually became minutely small. The fonts in pop-up menus are usually so large that part of the menu is cut off. However, if I install a new application the fonts are all normal. I'm hoping there is a solution that does not involve doing an XP repair or uninstalling and reinstalling my applications. I cannot afford the potential downtime - especially since this occurred shortly after I changed my hard drive and re-installed everything from scratch!

msconfig missing not a virus
by Guest witsend- 13 replies

Can anyone figure this one out. I type msconfig and all other iterations of same to get it to run. It doesn't. I copied a copy of the program itself from an internet source provided by a previous discussion group onto my desktop and tried running it from there (as a test to see if it works). It doesn't. I just "ghosted" my OS over to a new hard drive within the same machine and have the OS on both drives now. The settings in the registry under HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Policies\System and HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Policies\System and HKEY USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microso…

Messages stuck in Outbox in Outlook Express
by Guest bjkrist- 6 replies

Sorry, this is a correction on my previous post of "mail stuck in Outlook Express "Inbox". I'm trying to help my brother with this problem and mis-understood his problem. When he tries to send an email, the screen says "sending 1 of 7 messages " and no messages ever leave the Outbox. There is never a timeout and the screen just locks up and never changes. Thanks for your help.

Where to place comregdb.bak when restoring to alternate location?
by Guest David Walker- 0 replies

When I use ntbackup to restore the System State to an "alternate location", the "COM+ class registration database" is restored as "comregdb.bak". Where is this file supposed to be placed? The other files are pretty obvious (Program Files, Documents and Settings, Windows, etc.). Thanks for any help.

Re: Does System Restore restore files that have been deleted from I purchased a software program on the internet called Restore-My-Files and they would never send an activation code. Be very cautious of this company! They have no phone numbers and no mailing address. They use the ClickBank system and withdraw the $$ within 10 minutes and after that time you can never contact them! I hope my experience is helpful to others... Error Mesasages re: Windows Explorer & Stardust Screensaver
by Guest Peter- 0 replies

Hi, since upgrading from Windows ME to XP, two what could be related problems have come up. Firstly, and this happens quite often, whenever I try to open Windows Explorer (sometimes MY COMPUTER), I get an error message that reads like this: WINDOWS EXPLORER HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO CLOSE. I get the same message with STARDUST SCREENSAVER CONTROL as well, only, obviously, Stardust Screeensaver Control is in the message in place of Windows Explorer. The whole desktop resets itself but some capability is lost. In particular, some of the System Tray icons are irretrievably lost. Also, certain IE 7 windows cannot be made full screen. I did f…

Fix corrupt NTFS partition?
by Guest throwitout- 2 replies

I'm trying to fix what looks like a corrupt NTFS partition on a HP Media center PC. Initial symptoms were that the machine would show the POST screen, then show a blinking cursor in the upper left and not boot, giving no errors. F8 will not offer Safe-mode options. I believe the user may have been improperly restarting the computer when this started. Pressing F10 at boot will still bring up the HP recovery environment. The PC will not boot into recovery console from a Windows CD because it doesn't recognize a valid file system on c: The Windows installation CD lists the HP Recovery partition as FAT32 as the second partition, but an "unknown" partition wi…

sound not availible
by Guest Cameracut- 1 reply

Whenever I want to play a piece of audio, I have one of two problems. 1. It plays but I can not hear anything although the speakers are plugged in and I can hear the Windows sounds (eg. asterisk, log on, shut down, little notification bubble down at bottom). Then I bring up the volume control and it says there is no audio hardware installed and I need to install some (it already is). 2. A message comes up saying "Failed to initialize Direct Music Audio." . Then it just closes it. Thanks for any help -- Cameracut

windows only starts in safe mode
by Guest azevon- 4 replies

Greetings All, User was working on PC (WinXPSP2) all day yesterday, no issues (or so he says), shuts down with no errors. Turns on PC this morning, boots up, logs into network (using Novell client32), login window successfully disappears (so he's into the network), wallpaper appears, but doesn't get passed that. No desktop icons. I've tried: removing Novell client, removing all SpyWare, nothing. I CAN however, boot up into Safe Mode (with or without networking). I can bring up task manager and run any app I want. For example, I just launched Excel and accessed a Netware file. So something is preventing the desktop from fully loading. Anything…
