Safeboot bluescreen problem!!!!
by Guest Digit4lPimp- 1 reply

HI I have recently had a virus/malware problem. I have found a lot of stuff that I have removed but I couldn't boot in safe mode to run any of the anti spy/malware programs due to a constant bluescreen error after pressing F8. I read that using msconfig to boot in safe mode may work so I tried it! I ticked the Safeboot option and rebooted but now (of course) I still get the blue screen and now can't even get into windows. The bluescreen message is along the line of... A problem has been detected... ***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78BE524, 0x0000034, 0x000000000, 0x000000000) Does anyone have any suggestions? Pleeeeeese  Can I bypass msconfig some…

Exceptions in Firewall
by Guest joseph- 4 replies

In Control Panel / Windows Firewall / Exceptions ; I am suspicious of the some of the programs that are Enabled. Some have names like Remote Assistant, Network Diagnostics for W XP, and Windows Live Messneger. There are 9 at the top of the list that DO NOT have names which worry me? There is a box with a check mark in and just the word 'ENABLE',,, no name of a Program. When I click on Edit they have names which I will now Copy. I don't know about enabling these places to have access to my PC, whether they are important for operation or some type of intrusion. (Remember the only name they have is 'ENABLE" and they are checked, I don't ever remember allowi…

Blue Screen Crash
by Guest GRV- 1 reply

Hi the computer running XP Home has crashed stating "The video driver failed to initialise" and no amount of attempting safe mode or any other access works. The computer was store bought and didn't come with a recovery disk and none was made since. There is no trace of the XP home disk that came with it but I do have a brand new XP Pro disk and license that I was going to use in a new PC I was hoping to try and build just for the experience. My question is, if I install Windows XP using the "boot from CD option" will I lose the data such as photographs etc. already on the computer or will it just upgrade the operating system?

Hello The situation: I maintain an office, where they now got a computer with Vista. There are 4 computers, all connected via lan and the idea is that all documents are shared to everyone. There are 2 computers with XP Professional, one with XP Home and now one with Vista Home Premium. Sharing works in all cases, all computers can access "my documents" on all other computer (though on Vista I renamed the Documents folder for the sake of the standard. There are 3 minor issues with the system. The XP Pro are the best working computers. 1) XP Home cannot remember passwords for logging in to other computers. Is this specific for "home"? Professional has it…

Wierd Linksys, dhcp and slow network problem
by Guest witchwise- 0 replies

Hello, The basic setup:-I have a WRT54GS Linksys wireless router, one PC, which is always on, is networked directly to the router via ethernet cable, and two PC's using linksys wireless adapters. One of these PC's is new and I have just set it up. My Problem:- When my new PC (wireless) is turned on, the network on it alone, is very slow UNLESS i turn on the laptop as well (also wireless). When that happens, the network traffic on the new PC works absolutely fine. So basically at the minute, in order to stream movies and copy files over on to the new wireless PC i *have* to have the laptop on as well! I figure this is something to do with the routing table…

Wrong Icons for DVD drives
by Guest greggsy- 11 replies

Can anyone shed any light on my problem please. When I go into My Computer the icon for the hard drives and DVDs are all generic so that I am unable to see at a glance which is the DVD drives. I have been into Device Manager and the DVD drives (2) are correctly identified. I have checked as suggested by some in the registry for Drive Icons but this does not exist. I am running XP Pro with all the updates. My video card is Nvidia but I do not thinkl that has any bearing on the problem -- greggsy

Hello, I am new here. I generally leave my computer on and occassionaly I will come back to my pc after 5 minutes having been working on important documentation and find that an automatic update has occured and my pc has restarted. I then lose valuable data - end up cursing and generally it ruins the rest of my day. I am sure the Microsoft guys get a kick out of ruining people's days but HOW DO I DISABLE AN AUTOMATIC RESTART! McAfee requests that I restart - so how do I do the same for my Microsoft restart. I am fearing for the safety of my PC because this is driving me to madness.

by Guest Danny F- 1 reply

I have an issue that has been driving me insane. I have 4 Windows XP Pro SP3 workstations. All the Accounting Dept PC’s. I also have an old Windows 2000 SP4 Server that I want to take offline and decommission. The problem is as soon as I disconnect this server or shut it down. The 4 workstations slow to a crawl. Not just on the network but performance as well. Here is the scenario: Workstation 1 connected to network and Server Old connected to network. Everything works great, PC’s screaming fast. Unplug network cable of ServerOld, workstation1 slows to a crawl. Open command prompt and type notepad to open notepad 60 seconds before notepad opens. (I…

restart problem
by Guest oldbiker- 3 replies
We are sometimes told "please reboot your computer" If I do this by closing down and then switching on again (a cold boot) all is fine, BUT if I do this by clicking restart (a hot boot), the computer shuts down tries to switch on again and after being given the option to go into bios the screen goes black and the message "error loading operating system" appears. If I now cut the power and switch on again it boots up fine. What is going on?

to All that answered the Modem-Details post(s)

Again, I thank all of you for input. The problem turned out to be a need for a 'Firm-ware' update,, even though the modem was only purchased a few months ago. Moral of story,,, dont use 'virginbroadband' as an isp,, cos' Richard will be out Ballooning across the country rather than looking after his customers. Thanks to all again.

Run task before logging off?
by Guest simonc- 2 replies

I made some temporary changes to various security settings for a particular purpose and know there is a danger I'll forget to reset them afterwards. Is there any way you can get a reminder/task to run whenever you try to log off/shut down which would prompt you to reset them? Grateful for ideas.

Using Telix to talk to a modem
by Guest Jon- 4 replies

I know someone with a W98 PC who uses Telix (an old DOS programme) to send data over a dial-up modem. He has asked me if this will work on XP. Is XP likely to block the serial port communications?
