Recommend a multi-paste buffer utility, anyone?
by Guest ship- 0 replies
Hi Does anyone know of a way of having more than one paste buffer? i.e. rather than just have Control/C and Control/V I quite often find that I need to have 2 or 3 paste buffer on the go. BUT the different paste buffers must be available simply by using different hot keys. (I dont want to have to muck about using a mouse!) - Any thoughts Ship Shiperton Henethe

Help needed on Windows XP Recycle Bin
by Guest Devin104- 1 reply

On my desktop computer when I click "Explore" on the recycle bin it shows what items are in the recycle bin. On my laptop however when I click on "Explore" it does not show what is in the recycle bin. Even if I double click on the recycle bin the contents do not show. How can I fix my laptop recycle bin so I can know what is in it? I am afraid to delete anything in it before making sure what is in it. Thank you -- Devin104 -- Devin104

xp formatted a sata drive, any way to recover?
by Guest sobriquet- 4 replies
Hello. On a vista computer which has a sata and an pata drive, I attempted to install windows xp on a separate 2nd partition on the pata drive (where vista was also installed on the 1st partition). When windows asked where to install xp, I specifically chose the right partition and subsequently windows xp somehow jumped to the sata drive and formatted this. It was my mistake because I didn't look carefully and assumed that because I had previously carefully picked the right partition, it would format the partition I had designated where windows xp should install. So the bottom line is that xp formatted my 500 gb sata drive as a 128 gb drive. Does anyone know o…

Command line Windoze Explorer Search
by Guest davegb- 3 replies
I've searched all over for the answer to this simple question, including this NG. I'm using a launcher to do more and more of the "normal" stuff that I do. I'd like to be able to launch Windoze Explorer in Search mode, then enter what I want it to search for. But I can't seem to find it. Thought it would be a switch, but apparently not. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks!

Boot manager, XP and Xandros
by Guest Dave Neve- 5 replies
Hello I installed a 30 day trial of Xandros (sililar to Linux) and it introduced a dual boot somewhere in the system Once the 30 day period over, I want to go back to XP by itself and wipe clean my second drive where Xandros was installed. But I'm worried that sth will go wrong at this moment and I'll lose access to Windows Ive looked at my Windows boot configuration and surprisingly, Xandros isn't there. Any ideas where it might be and what would happen if I simply erase the second drive and Xandros without further ado? Thanks Dave Neve

STARTUP DISK CHECK PROBLEM
by Guest RicRob- 1 reply
Whenever I power up my PC (running XP Home Edition SP2) I get a message that my hard drive needs to be checked. If I let the disk check proceed, the check proceeds at a snail's pace and never finishes. I let it run all night once and by morning it was only up to 18%. When I came home from work that evening it was still at 18%. If I cancel the disk check at power-up, Windows seems to come up OK with no apparent problems. If anyone has any suggests I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

When I first log on to Discussion in Windows XP General, the pane on the right says please sign in using the button above. But the button seems to have disappeared. I have a Back, Edit my Profile and Help button, but no Sign-in button. I can manage to sign in via a very torturous route, but it's time-consuming. Any ideas where it's gone. -- donwb

Command prompt confusion
by Guest Dick Baker- 7 replies
As somebody who had two CMP computers before switching to DOS, and who stuck with DOS long after most of the world had switched to Windows, I thought I was conversant with DOS/Command prompts, but this one has me baffled. I need to combine several .wmv files into one, e.g., combine 1.wmv and 2.wmv and 3.wmv into 1-3.wmv The various Windows GUI programs I found are all wretchedly convoluted and slow, but there's a plain old DOS program that's supposed to do the trick, wmvappend.exe. It's command prompt syntax is given as wmvappend -o <outfile> -i1 <firstinfile> -i2 <secondinfile> [-a <attributeindex>] outfile = Outp…

ALERT: Disk encryption may not be secure enough
by Guest jim- 4 replies

You may have already heard about or read about this story. If so, this is not for you. For those people in positions where privacy can mean the life or death of a career or even a person, listen up...... "Computer scientists have discovered a novel way to bypass the encryption used in programs like Microsoft's BitLocker and Apple's FileVault and then view the contents of supposedly secure files. In a paper (PDF) published Thursday that could prompt a rethinking of how to protect sensitive data, the researchers describe how they can extract the contents of a computer's memory and discover the secret encryption key used to scramble files. (I tested t…

? ? Did my "License" die with my HD ? ?
by Guest 2Dumb2Backup- 16 replies

I bought a computer with XP home on it. Of course, I didn't ever make the recovery disc they tell you to make, so when my hard drive crashed (hard) I don't have anything to re-install from. My question is this... Do I have to go buy Windows all over again, or (as I would contend) since I bought a "license" for Windows, and (as I would further contend) my license didn't die with the hard drive, can I just buy a new hard drive, download Windows XP Home edition as I had previously and install it "unlocking" it with my "product key" which luckily is on a sticker stuck to the top of my computer?? If so, then please point me to where I would download this file …

Restoring COA Product Key
by Guest Richard Harison- 20 replies
Help! Just purchased new Dell, which is working fine. (XP Home--all the updates installed) Unfortunately the COA sticker was placed crooked on the top of the machine and someone, thinking it ugly, stripped it off. I know that somewhere down the line I will have to re-install the OS and now I have no Product Key. I have the OEM disk from Dell, but their customer service is pathetic in this regard--saying it has to be done through Microsoft. I have Dell's service tag # and express service code #, but they cannot ID the OS any more than saying it is XP. Tried forums through MS website-- all leading to dead ends. Is there possibly a SIMPLE solution to reg…

Please wait...... (New Thread)
by Guest rmo555@cox.net- 8 replies

I posted this to the help and support group but haven't received any advise that works. Perhaps someone in this group can help: Right after the POST and just before I see the Logon screen, I get a light blue screen and the words "Please Wait......" appear at the top left of the screen. The '.' (periods) after the word 'wait' continue one by one until they stop and the Logon continues. Does anyone know why this might happen and what I can do about it? Thank you.

winlogon.exe crashes on logging off or shutting down
by Guest Ron Hirsch- 4 replies
I've had an ongoing problem for about 7 months. My system is a high end system running XP Pro, which I built 2 years ago. It runs flawlessly, but when shutting down, since the fall of 2007, winlogon.exe crashes. It also crashes if I just log off, and don't shutdown. In Safe Mode, it never crashes during shutdown or logging off. Periodically, after taking some specific action such as uninstalling a piece of software or hardware, or running RegCure, the shutdowns may become normal. And that may last for 1 hour, 1 day or up to 3 weeks. But then things return to crashing. When the system is running, it runs very smoothly, with no problems visible of any …
