I386 Folder Files Question
by Guest ColTom2- 9 replies
Hi: I have a Toshiba laptop running Win XP Home Edition and a Sony desktop running Win XP MCE(2005). When I open Windows Explorer and go to Windows\ServicePackFiles on the XP Home and open I386 folder it still has I suppose all the SP2 files (2,056 objects) in it which includes the Lang folder. However, when I open the Windows\ServicePackFiles folder on XP MCE (2005) all it has is the Lang folder and no files. Why is there a disparity in XP Home having these files while XP MCE (2005) does not? The reason that I ask is that I had a corrupt System Restore on the XP MCE (2005) and I could not restore it until I transferred the I386 Servi…

XP install loop while in Safe Mode
by Guest BatFrog- 3 replies

I had my computer in Safe Mode (won't go into lengthly reasons for that), and decided to run the xp install disk for repairs. So I boot from the xp install cdrom and all goes normally and I choose the repair option. It takes a few minutes loading a bunch of files and then says, " must reboot now to finish". So the computer re-boots automatically, but now it comes up with a screen ""Windows xp setup cannot run under Safemode. Setup will restart now" At this point the machine re-boots and it goes straight to the "cannot run under Safemode" error message again. This repeats endlessly. I need to get out of safemode or get the XP Setup program to stop runni…

I just saw that the RC2 download DOES now show up in the "Show beta software". If you have attempted the download, please make sure to remove it before the final release comes out. This will ensure the registry values are in "pre-download" status.

Caps Lock
by Guest Barry Karas- 2 replies
22/Feb/2008 Suddenly, my computer (running Windows XP with SP 2) doesn't make a small noise - like ringing a bell, softly - when the Caps Lock key is pressed. Although I use a text editing program that allows me to convert from upper to lower case (and vice versa), it is bothersome to do so, especially since I did not have to convert before now. How would make my computer make a small noise when the Caps Lock key is pressed? Thank you, Barry Karas

How is quicktime starting?
by Guest Paul- 16 replies

I recently installed quicktime on my xp system. I see that at startup in xp that quicktime is doing it's automatic update thing. It just popped up a dialog. I know how to turn off auto update in quicktime -- that's not the issue. What is bothering me is that I don't see how quicktime is starting up. I have the sysinternals programs autostart and process explorer. I don't see any Apple software in autostart, and there appear to be no quicktime tasks in process explorer. How is quicktime starting up? Some sort of new stealth mode?

Configure TS Automatically for Logged On User
by Guest Thomas M.- 1 reply

XP SP2 We are in the process of converting our users to standard user accounts. We have a number of employees who use terminal services to remotely control their machines. By default, administrators on the local machine have the right to use terminal services, whereas non-administrators must be added to the Remote Desktop Users list. This sets up a situation where people have the ability to use terminal services by virtue of the fact that they are members of the local administrators group. Once they are removed from local administrators group, and if they have not been added to the Remote Desktop Users list, they lose the ability to use terminal ser…

Inherited rights
by Guest Ercle- 1 reply

I was wondering if there is a place in the registry or if there is a DOS command that would allow me to re-active a folder's (and its subfolders) inherited rights flag? I was setting up manual rights to files and folders and forgot to re-activate one of Adobe's folder and sub-folders. If I could simply re-activate it via a registry entry or DOS command, I would be able to re-activate these rights on multiple workatations deployed in our department! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I enabled the error check (chdisk) on my c-drive to run on boot-up. No bad sectors were found. Unfortunately, chdisk now continues to run each time I boot-up. The computer will not allow a "defrag" because "ckdisk/f needs to run first". Any suggestions? -- Mike nemo

Res.All To day my computer has this type of desktop. It reads :-Warning. Spyware has been detected in your computer etc.. also the security warnings are coming at every few minutes. I think this type of interference is done by an anti-spyware software itself. How can I remove all these things without buying that software? Any changes in the registry settings will correct this? Thanking you in anticipation Prashant

Need standalone download for Windows XP Service Pack 1
by Guest John7690- 4 replies

I ran into an unusual situation yesterday and need help to solve the circular problem. I am resurrecting an old Dell 4300 desktop for my son to use as his first computer. The box was inherited from my mom with a dead hard drive. Using parts I had lying around I replaced the drive and added a USR5417 wireless modem to connect to our home wireless network for internet access. The problem is that the OEM installation disc for XP Home is a pre-SP1 version and it turns out that the driver for the wireless card requires SP1 to install, hence the recursive error: I can't download SP1 via Windows Update without the card and I can't get the card working witho…

MVP, I have compaq pressario running XP home edition. Suddenly both of my CD drives are no longer available. In the device manager it shows error code 41. "driver loaded but Windows cannot find the device." I tried to delete both devices in the device manager and restart my computer. After the restart both cd drives come back with yellow exclamation and error code 41 again. I also checked the IDE cable which connnects both drives to the secondary IDE port on the motherboard. I disconnected and reconnected all but this did not fix. Any ideas what is wrong? I dont think both CD drives(ASUS CDRW and HP DVDRW) went bad at the same time. Is this a …

Accessing registry on a 2nd HD
by Guest Gary Richtmeyer- 4 replies
I have a client's PC that won't boot and the decision has been made to re-install XP. I've removed the HD and placed it into a 2nd PC in order to backup the user's files before reformatting. However, there is some info in the registry on that HD that I'd like to access before reformatting the drive, but I'm at a loss on how to access it. Regedit allows you to connect to a registry on another networked PC, but not to a registry on another HD on the same PC. I know there must be a technique to do this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Can anyone help? -- Gary Richtmeyer
