Backing up the system drive - but also the MBR and Track 0??
by Guest Bill in Co.- 9 replies

Like some others here, I've used Acronis True Image (11) to backup my system partition to a USB hard drive enclosure, but I have a question. If, in addition to backing up and restoring the system partition C:, is it ever necessary to also backup and restore the MBR and Track 0 (which is also presented as an option in Acronis)? When is THAT needed? So should the MBR (and Track 0) also be backed up too? (I am guessing not, as I've gotten away so far without doing it). But if you add or delete programs, doesn't that affect the MBR (and the partition tables) at all? Or is it only if you make a change to the actual drive partitioning that the MBR c…

Log on automatically after log off
by Guest Uncle Marvo- 2 replies
I have a requirement to log on Windows XP automatically after a log off. I know this might be unusual, but I am using a piece of third-party software which has a bug in it and they're not about to fix it, so I need to automatically log off every hour or so. I have set XP up with one account (Administrator), auto logon, no password, and if I restart the machine it logs on with no intervention, but I don't want to restart it, just to log it off. Is this possible? TIA

My system is running XP Pro sp2 with the latest patch that I am aware of (I have automatic download on for updates). This morning the following error message popped up during the start up: he instructions at "0x7c918fea" referenced memory at "0x00000010". The memory could not be written. Cannot seem to find that error message in the Microsoft knowledge base. Would appreciate any insight. Thanks.

I want to turn off Windows Firewall because I have another firewall I want to use. I have a windows 20003 server - domain. Windows XP Pro on workstations. I see that the network connection are firewalled. I went to Security Center and to the Windows firewall settings. I won't give me the option to turn off the firewalled it is greyed out. The new computer came with Micro Trend PC Cillan preloaded - full subscrption. I took all references of that out of the networking and msconfig etc. I am still firellwalled. I will let me edit the viurs. I wondering if there may be a scropt that is stopping this? Somebody else set this up. I am just replaci…

Can't delete file
by Guest PSRumbagh- 4 replies

There is a file named "index.dat" in my Cookies folder. Looking inside the file with a Hex file reader (Hex_Reader XV132 2.12) the files internal header says "Client UrlCache MMF ver 5.2". Windows won't let me delete this file saying that it is in use by a program or other person. I can't figure out what program is using this file. I have tried deleting this file under normal windows, safe mode windows, DOS command and the freeware program Unlocker Ver 1.8.1 to no avail. What is this file and how can or should I try to delete it? Is it a master index to the 1312 cookies that are in my Cookies folder?

I have a machine that loses several preferences after a shutdown and restart. Examples are screen resolution, IE window size, and some application preferences. The settings survive a warm reboot, but not a complete shutdown. Anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it?

Missing iconcache.db?
by Guest Bill in Co.- 3 replies
Interestingly, this cache file has recently disappeared for me, and no matter what I do, I can't get it back, which seems a bit strange. Yes, I know it's a hidden file, and I've tried the various tricks like switching video resolutions and rebooting - to get it back, etc, but all to no avail. I'm just wondering if anyone else out there has the same issue of no iconcache.db. Keep in mind it's a hidden file, so unless you have your system set up to show hidden files, you'll never see it. This file is a hidden file, that normally lurks in: Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data, and stores the icons. But so far, it doesn't seem to be p…

Beginning several months ago, my computer (XP, Service Pack 2) speed seems to have slowed considerably. I have noticed in particular, for example, that if I click on a .jpg file, it takes about 30 seconds to load Irfanview and display the image, whereas, if I click on my Irfanview desktop icon Irfanview loads in about 1 second. Then If I click on the desired file, it loads in a second or two. Same behavior for other types of files, e.g., .doc, .txt, ..pdf ,.xls) It's always a lot faster (like 30 seconds faster) to load the app (Word, Note Tab Light, Adobe Reader, Excel) first and then find the file. I do not see this problem with other computers, an…

Uninstalling IE 7
by Guest 5tulips- 1 reply

I have been having some kind of a connection error because I cannot connect to the server for my web site. I can, however, go to the internet, get mail and everything else, except for this one problem. I have been reading of many people having problems like that because of IE 7. So I'm going to uninstall IE 7 to see if that corrects the problem. The question is, there are 8 security updates for IE 7 also installed. Do I need to uninstall them, also? Two of them were installed the same day I installed IE 7. DSG ...........................................................................

laptop shutting down when playing video/games
by Guest Teen Davey- 3 replies

I have a problem playing videos/games . After playing a game for about 10 minutes the laptop shuts down (turns off) and I have to switch it back on . This has been happening for the past year , even games I have played in the past with no problem (diablo) now shut the laptop down after a short length of time . It only occurs when playing videos or games , all other times the unit runs normally ... going into and returning from standby , etc . and there are no other problems with the system I know of. As it has only just started I am wondering if one of the automatic updates has changed something .. It is an emachine laptop running XP home edition (orig sy…

Hibernation scheduled task
by Guest ManyBeers- 0 replies

I currently use Shutter.exe http://www.den4b.com/screenshots.php?project=Shutter to hibernate my Sony laptop at night and use a scheduled task to wake my laptop in the morning. The reason i use Shutter. exe to hibernate the laptop is because when i tried to run (rundll32.exe powrprof, setsuspendstate hibernate) as a scheduled task it worked fine as far as hibernating the computer went but the computer would no longer wake in the morning. For some reason rundll32.exe powrprof, setsuspendstate hibernate would not allow my scheduled task wake event to occur. However i was reading a post and there was a link to this page(http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/libr…

Scroll lock comes on automatically
by Guest asliae- 2 replies

Scroll lock will frequently turn on by itself. I have a Dell D620 laptop running Windows XP. I if I wanted to turn the scroll lock on or off, I have to press Function + Num Lk. There have been times when I have not even been typing and I will still see the indicator turn on by itself. This has been an on-going issue for many months. It is very frustrating, particularly when working in Excel. Scroll lock does not come on automatically when I boot up the PC; however, after I have been working on the computer for a while it will start turning on by itself. How can I make sure that the Scroll Lock feature only turns on when I actually push the butto…

Two PCs Started "Freezing Up"
by Guest (PeteCresswell)- 2 replies

I've got two PCs side-by-side and sometime in the last month or so they've both started acting goofy. The main symptom seems tb that they cannot be shut down. Ctl-Alt-Del will not bring up TaskMan, and some applications cannot be close. Windows pops the "Not Responding..." dialog, but telling it to close the app now doesn't do anything. In the end, both PCs have to have the AC power cord pulled for a cold start. When the first one started this, I re-imaged it with a known good system. No luck. I had been thinking that there was some hardware problem on the first PC to start acting up... but the second one started and I had to wonder. Windows a…

"Natural" viewer for .jpg files?
by Guest RichardOnRails- 21 replies

Hi, I recently install Nero 7 and foolishly allowed the installer to reset all relevant extensions to its utilities. I just realized the error of my ways when I double-clicked the name of a .jpg file in Windows Explorer. I remapped that extension to Windows Media Player (because that's all I could think of), and it displayed the icon satisfactorily, but surrounded with it a slew of stuff irrelevant to my little icon. Somehow, double-clicking used to open a window sized exactly to the icon's content. What viewer in WinXP/SP2 which does that? I'll post a message to Nero on how to undo all those installation settings, but it'll take a week or so befor…
