chkdsk then asking for boot disk???
by Guest lmcdill- 3 replies
I revceived a kernel page error and then some other error that said to send report to microsoft. So I did and then they came back and said to run a chkdsk. I used the guided help and checked to fix errors. This chkdsk process took a long time fixing bad sectors in files. I ended up just going to bed while it was still running. Went down this AM before work and now it is asking for a boot disk. Do I just put in the cd that came with the computer? Do I bypass this somehow? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Question about SP3 download size
by Guest dairyman- 15 replies

I have a question. After reading some overheated puff about this new "Windows XP SP3 RC2", I want to try it. But my connection is limited, which means if I exceed the data allowance, my connection will slow down. So, is there a way to get a smaller setup file for SP3? Thank you.

Re-building WinXP - Mystery "PCI Device" and mystery "SM BusController"... Hi I am rebuilding my Windows XP Pro (OEM). When I check my Device Manager, ( Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager ) ...I find there are errors: "? Other devices: ? PCI Device ? SM Bus Controller" ...with yellow ? marks. The only card that I think I have in the box (judging by the outside) is Matrox Millenium graphics card (see below) Is it likely that it is causing the "PCI device" error?? Because it seems to be working fine (as far as I can see...) Also can anyone tell me what a "SM Bus Controller" is and what I should be downloading t…

Hanging task bar and desktop
by Guest Thirsty Lemur- 0 replies

I have just started having a problem with my task bar hanging every now and then and my desktop doing the same (but never at the same time). it takes about 5 min for my computer to get from the "starting windows" to the point where my desktop thaws out and i can run applications. it just started happening about a week ago and it seems everything is happening at once. while I'm viewing video files, they'll freeze every couple of seconds, for a few seconds and catch back up with themselves but only periodically. when i open the my computer for the first time after a reboot, it hangs for about 30 seconds then i'm able to do wut i need. i've tried to reformat …

Stand by/Sleep mode
by Guest Antares 531- 4 replies

My recently built desktop computer will not go into standby/sleep mode. It progresses through the screen saver part, but instead of shutting down it pops back to the active desktop mode and remains there indefinitely. This is a new computer I built a short time back, using a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. It has two 1 GB DDR2 memory sticks and is running Windows XP Pro SP 2. In general this computer works very well, but I can not get it to go into sleep mode. It has a 500 GB Western Digital hard drive and is no where near the point of being short of disk space or memory. I have opened Display Properties > Screen…

External hard drive - "The file or directory is corrupted andunreadable"
by Guest Robert Colgan- 5 replies

I've got a 320 GB external hard drive that I've had for about a year, but the other day when I tried to access it I got the following error message: E:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable Anyone know the cause of this or a way to fix it? Is the hard drive shot? Any chance of getting my data back? Thanks, Robert (Sorry if this isn't the best place to post this, but I'm putting it here in hopes that many people will see it.)

sp2 playing havoc with my monitor driver??
by Guest geurinT- 2 replies
Hello, I just wiped and reinstalled xp pro. Everything was running good. I have a laptop with a screen that probably has a burned out backlight or transformer or some such, so it's on a dock and I'm using an external monitor. I tried to install the SP2 and everything seemed fine. After the reboot, all I got on the external monitor is the desktop background pic. No start menu. No files that were previously on desktop. Figuring I messed something up I went back to a previous save point and tried to figure out what I did wrong. Posted on here but didn't get anywhere. So I tried again. Same thing, but before I reboot I looked at the screen of the…

Favourites in Windows Explorer - IE and Windows
by Guest Gregor III- 2 replies

I find it irritating that the Favourites in Windows Explorer also include my Internet Explorer Favourites - I do a lot of jumping between files and directories and want to find them easily, without having to look at a mass of irrelevant links. I mean, I can't see the point of having Internet favourites in with Windows directory favourites. It's extremely rare that I would need to jump directly from a directory to an internet link. Either I'm doing one type of work or the other - internet or file sorting. I checked the "Folder Options" in windows Explorer and there doesn't appear to be any option relevant to this. Of course, the option might have t…

Navigating between applications
by Guest Ross- 1 reply

Hi, My ability to navigate between applications has changed and I have been unable to find out how to fix my trouble. In the past, I could click on an icon on the bottom of my window and navigate to that application. For instance, if I had several email messages open in Outlook, I could click on the Outlook icon on the bottom of my screen, a list of the email messages would appear and then by selecting one of those messages, I would immediately navigate to that message. Now when I attempt to do the same thing, nothing occurs and the general Outlook icon on the bottom ofthe screen remains highlighted. This occurs with all open applications. The only …

I have a Dell running windows XP sp2 with two user accounts. Everything had been working fine for a long time. Suddenly I am having a problem with one account. Both have Admin priviledges: - One account can NOT access the Program Files. Gets "Access Denied" error if I try to open it. Cannot install new programs from this user. Cannot start most pgms via desktop shortcuts however seems to be able to open modules via "startup" folder. I checked the ownership and it is "Administrators". Since this happened suddenly I thought it might be a virus but I have run my anti-virus and spyware software with no luck. Roger

Cursor Movement Not Smooth
by Guest RN1- 3 replies
I am working on WinXP Pro (SP2) with 160GB HDD, 512MB RAM & P4 2.8GHz. Today while working, suddenly there was a long system beep (it's the same beep sound that can be heard when the computer is started but the RAM chip is not properly fitted in its slot). WinXP didn't generate any error but since then I find that whenever I start WinXP, as soon as the desktop comes, my computer generates a long beep. Also when I use the keyboard Left/Right arrow & Up/Down arrow keys to scroll horizontally & vertically respectively in any text editing software (like NotePad, MS-Word etc.), the cursor movement isn't smooth. If you navigate to Tools-->Internet O…

Windows Security Update
by Guest John Watt- 3 replies

I have XP Professional with SP1 and was able with LeechFTP to upload and publish my web pages to my hosting company no problem. Then inexplicably this all changed on the 15th of February and I have since been unable to update my Customer web pages with either LeechFTP, Filezilla or CoreFTP. After investigation it appears I have received three security updates on the date everything stopped working. (I was getting a socket error) When I removed the SECURITY UPDATES (KB 944533 & 943055 & 946026) I still was unable to upload my web pages. But low and behold if I drop my firewall everything is now working. In terms of a security update this is a bit of…
