Short-cuts I would like to have
by Guest Jay- 2 replies
1. Can I have a "Add/Remove Programs" shortcut on the Start Menu somewhere near the Control Panel shortcut? So that I'll do directly into Add/Remove Programs. 2. Can I have a short-cut to a folder of my choice in the start menu? I would like to have a short-cut to a folder that I often use that is inside the "My Pictures" folder. I have a lot of room on the right hand side of the start menu (with only My Docs, My Pics, Recent Docs, Ctrl Pan, My Comp and Run there) so I could definitely add these two short-cuts if at all possible. Thanks J

by Guest Lenny- 0 replies

Hi, I have a PC that seems to bring up a couple of errors in the event viewer and the computer also runs extremely slowly at times. They might be connected and I don't know what they relate too. Any advice would be great. These events seem to occur every 30 minutes one straight after the other and all the time. Here are the two event errors. I have no idea what PSS is. Event Type: Error Event Source: ESENT Event Category: Logging/Recovery Event ID: 494 Date: 15/02/2008 Time: 08:31:15 User: N/A Computer: DAWN Description: wuauclt (2456) Database recovery failed with error -1216 because it encountered references to a database, 'C:\WINDOWS\Soft…

by Guest Jim in Arizona- 2 replies

One of my co-workers asked me the other day what it is excactly that forces us to reboot a windows box after we change its name or join/disjoin it from a domain. The question was "What services are affected so we can just restart those instead of doing a reboot?". Does anyone know an answer to this? TIA, Jim

Area Code Rules II
by Guest Mark B- 6 replies
I will try this again with Screenshots, since my first attempt got no proper responses... Seems Windows, by default, forces a 1 before every area code when dialing through Oulook, for example. Other than adding every US area code into the Area Code Rules of the Dialing Properties and unchecking the Dial 1 Before Area Code box, is there any way to get windows to stop dialing 1 before ALL area codes? Example Screen Shots in order.... http://njycamps.org/temp/1.jpg http://njycamps.org/temp/2.jpg http://njycamps.org/temp/3.jpg

getting a new valid key for xp pro
by Guest jeremy123- 1 reply
I bought a computer a couple of months ago. It came with XP pro installed, but no CD or key was given to me. It worked fine, I got no errors with activation, or windows genuine or anything like that. However, the harddrive died, and I needed to install windows again on a new harddrive. I borrowed a friends cd, it installed, but failed WGA. I don't mind buying a new license and key, but I was wondering: I can get a discount through Microsoft employee purchase program (EPP). Can I use that key (even though the page for puchasing XP pro on EPP says 'version upgrade') to change my incorrect key on the computer and validate windows? I don't want to have to wip…

by Guest s1misza- 17 replies

I've bought cable to connect two computers (notebook<-->PC) Easy Transfer Cable for Vista (Laplink). The cable doesn't required any drivers because use a Windows tool "Windows Easy Transfer", which is included in Windows Vista. When I connect the cable to my notebook with Vista PL (Polish), everythink's OK but on my PC with XP PL (Polish) is a problem because XP doesn't have this tool "Windows Easy Transfer" and required is install this tool. I found Windows Easy Transfer on the Microsowt web site but not in Polish language, so I download this with English language. When I try to install this I see this communicate: "setup cannot update your Wind…

http links don't work
by Guest chas- 8 replies
If I click on a link in a browser such as IE or Firefox the links work. But in almost everything else, such as Open Office Org I get messages like --------------------------- http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5660494686870523359&hl=en-CA --------------------------- This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- Or nothing happens. The error message seemed like it had a good clue. But I couldn't find what to change there. Any ideas? Thanks, Chas

TCPIP.SYS issue
by Guest Burleyman- 5 replies
I am getting this warning on all the users I have checked so far (40+), Event ID:4226, Source Tcpip, and it states TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connection attempts. I know it means that over 10 connections did not fully connect in 1 second (if I am wrong let me know). What I need to do is to find out how I can increase that amount, as it is causing problems with my users. I was going to use a hex editor for the TCPIP.SYS file but I do not know the offset to the area that would need to be changed. Can someone please help me with something that I can do to increase this? I really don't want to download some ne…

During startup, my machine has become increasingly SLOW for about 5 mins or so, and I now discovered that msiexec is sucking up 80-90% of CPU resources, rendering my system useless until msiexec decides to go away. why is msiexec running, when I am not trying to install anything? how can i get rid of this aggravating annoyance at startup? thanx
