Profiles removed from Windows XP on logoff
by Guest sgt-spam- 2 replies
We just moved from NT 4 to AD (Server 2003). I have a few users that, when they log off, their profiles are removed from the computer. The behavior seems to be linked to moving their accounts from the administrators group locally into the power users group via domain users. Not everyone is affected. In fact, most are not, but I'm not certain about reconfiguring local permissions on the remainder of my workstations because I've lost several profiles from this 'bug'. I've thought about deleting and re-creating the user accounts, but that's a hassle... Any other ideas?

I'm having some problems with my PC. I went into BIOS and one of the options is to enable, disable USB Legacy. What is the purpose of USB Legacy? Also what will the result be if I leave it disabled? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, attilathehun1 -- attilathehun1

Upgrading to Windows XP from Windows Me
by Guest PlasmaRelay- 13 replies
I have a Dell Dimension 8100 purchased in 2001 and am still using Windows Me. No real problems with it, but think it is about time to upgrade to Windows XP. On the Dell Forum, I asked about this and it was recommended to do a "clean install" of Windows XP, rather than doing an upgrade. Is that really the best way to do this? Appreciate any comments on this. Thank you. -- PlasmaRelay San Antonio, TX

Is there also a Windows XP Recovery Disc made available by Microso
by Guest floringeorge2001- 5 replies
Two years ago I bought a Dell laptop 6400 with Windows XP Professional already installed . My problem is that I did not get also a real Windows XP Professional installation CD with my purchase. Instead, i received a so called "recovery disc" . At that time I did not thought that I should have asked for a installation CD especially considering the fact that the price for it was implicitly paid by me when purchasing the laptop. The problem is the installation media serves more than one purpose. It's not just a way to get Windows XP installed, it's also the only way to do things such as: - the recovering a borked installation; - the installation of the R…

I have a user on the road with a laptop using XP pro and VPN. This particular user has virus protection. For some unknow reason VPN has disappeared completely and she is unable to create a new connection. When she gets to the point to connect to the network at workplace the 2 choices for Create the following connectin: Dial up connectin and Virtual Private Network Connection radio buttons she can not choose either one. It's not a permission thing because I make her login as administrator. In addition if she goes to network connection in the control panel the VPN choice has disappeared too. Does anyone have any information on how to get this back?

How to move indexing catalog files to a different disk?
by Guest Academia- 1 reply
I been looking at the Indexing documentation and can't find anything that would indicate that the catalogs might be on a disk other than the system disk. Is it true that the index files must be on the system disk? Is there just one index file or one per catalog or one per disk or one per folder...? Can you tell me how to move them to a different disk? Thanks

How do I add tabbed browsing to Windows Explorer?
by Guest foxt2372- 3 replies
I have been seeing alot about adding tabbed browsing to Windows Explorer, most either call for replacing explorer or downloading a program that hacks the registry. Even Microsofts help and support has something that gives me the idea that Internet Explorer 7 will allow me to explore MY Computer with tabs via a registry hack. Unfortunatly Microsofts hack doesn't appear to work and I do not trust unfamiliar programs that hack my registry nor do I like what I am hearing about the replacement programs for W.E.. Any suggestions? -- "A man who listens even half so much as he speaks will be wise indeed."

BSOD STOP 0x00000024
by Guest cpfc-fan- 2 replies
Hi, Last week my PC suddenly crashed. Rebooting the PC led to the blue screen STOP error message: STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203,0x873662B8,0xC0000102,0x00000000) This screen appears every time I reboot, whether I try to go into Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration etc. I have been searching the web for potential fixes / better understanding of what is causing the problem. I have found various suggestions like running CHKDSK, disabling anti-virus software etc. However, my problem is that I do not know how I can do this since I cannot get past the blue STOP screen.... I am sure that this is a stupid question, but is there a way to go direct to the DOS comm…

No log on button on thid web site
by Guest donbowyer- 0 replies

Windows XP I want to go to either the Office or Windows XP Discussion Group pages and sign in to post a question. However I no longer have a sign in button on either site, which help says should be in the top right corner although I do have the Edit my Profile button. I have a .NET Passport. The only way I can sign in is to click New / Question which brings up the sign in page. However when I enter my details and hit the sign in button this brings up:- “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage”. If I then hit the browser back button I get the page back and I’m signed in OK. Where has the sign in button gone? -- donwb

Conflict with Java and IE 7
by Guest larrymax- 1 reply

Ever since I tried to d/l IE7 (which was unsuccessful...I think because of conflict with Java), my computer is messed up. I had to restore my system back to Version 6.0, but I cannot COMPOSE or FORWARD emails w/o having my browser close me out, and the same thing happens when I try to view vids on Media Player. When I remove JAVA and try to reinstall it, the installer "cannot proceed with the current connection settings," Then it refers me to JAVA d/l HELP, but there it tells me it can't establish a connection to server at JAVA.COM...suggesting that I may require an ActiveX Control J2SE Runtime Environment 6...but does not provide a CLICK BUTTON for …

Cannot open Help and Support in XP Sevicer Pack 2
by Guest Tony R- 4 replies

I posted this question before and got one reply which I tried with no success. If I try to open Help and Support by clicking Start, the hourglass appears briefly but nothing opens. Task manager says nothing is running. If I try to open any Help files in Office, an empty window opens top left of the screen but it is empty. Other apps on the PC which use Help that is not an html file or a link to the web also give me erros such as they cannot find the Help file or it must be corrupted or re-install the application. I have replaced the HelpCtr key in the registry, I have created a new admin level account in case my account is corrupt and still I can find no s…

Boot drive letter protection against viruses
by Guest smlunatick- 6 replies

Several of the local computer shops, in my area, are now recommending that XP be installed on a drive letter above E. This is to help prevent viruses from infecting them since most viruses look for drive C and D to infect. Is this a valid point to prevent viruses?

I tried the remove from list function then put it back but no change. Greg

Using XP Home to replace "recovery" version
by Guest Joe Mamma- 5 replies
Here's the situation, I have a copy of Windows XP, which I have installed on one of my computers. I have another system, which came pre-installed with Windows XP for which I only have a set of recovery disks. I would like to re-format and re-install the system that only has recovery disks, but I do not want all the crap (trial versions of software, etc.) that would be installed this way. Here in lies the question: Since I have 2 legitimate windows licenses. Can I use the regular copy of windows XP to install the second computer and take advantage of the license that came with the computer? In other words, will this be OK with MS, will the phone act…

Windows Registry!
by Guest Aravind- 1 reply

Ah.. The centralised configuration database.. This heap of data is not present in Mac OS, the way it is in Windows.. It is even there in WOW Vista! Except for the fact that it is a centralised open repositry it has no pros.. But cons comes like hill.. It is very open to any kinda attacks and most of the junks sit up, slowing down the system.. Right from a trojan to spywares starts from registry.. And the more astonishing fact is that, when u install more sw, the more system slows down.. Now i'm asking for alternatives.. Either the same *.ini files in a hierarchial locked directory structure or data in xml?? Help..
