Combining XP with SP2 for reinstallation
by Guest CuriousMark- 7 replies
My computer came with XP SP1. Recently I had to reinstall the software and I came across articles 894947-894950: "Combining Windows XP with Service Pack 2 for reinstallation (parts 1 - 4)" that describe how to create a boot disc with XP and SP2 integrated using the original XP1 disk, downloaded SP2, and BBIE software to extract the boot image. I followed along with everything until the very end. It says to create a new folder called "Xpcd" with the XP files and SP2 integrated. That was easy. Then it says to run BBIE to extract the boot image from the original XP SP1 disk and create a file image1.bin on the desktop. That was easy. But it doesn't say what to…

I thought I read somewhere that support for Windows XP was finishing with the release of SP3 sometime this year and that the Product Activation was going to be done away with, can anyone tell me if this is correct or not, or are we going to be stuck with this horror called Wpa forever.

Opening window
by Guest A Martin- 2 replies

Right after the XP opening logo and scrolling bar, while booting, there is a picture I somehow put there that I would like to remove. It is sentimental and is a sad reminder every time I boot up. I have tried everything I know, to try, with no success, i.e. screensaver, desktop etc. It is one of my .jpg photo files. Suggestions as to how I can remove it will really be appreciated. Thanks, A.Martin

MSN Messenger - .sqm Files
by Guest Lori- 4 replies
I have 3 users running MSN Messenger Live v8.1 Build 8.1.0178.00. One of the users noticed .sqm files stored all over the place - root of C:, certain shared network drives, etc. I Googled around & the consensus is that they are harmless and can be deleted but I would like to stop them from being created altogether. The closest I got were instructions on disabling the 'Customer Experience Improvement Program' option however the instructions must've been written for a different version since only 1 of the 2 options were available: This one I found on v8.1 -- Open MSN Messenger -- Go to Help -- Go to Customer Experience Improvement Program and pu…

Ole doesn't work with images
by Guest Newsletter- 0 replies

Hello, quick'n'dirty explanation. I can use OLE to insert any filetype except images. When I try to insert an image as OLE (in Wordpad for example) it just freezes the program so i've to kill it's process. Strange thing is that it's only on the one users account, but creating a new account isn't really an options (since you all know how much pain in the ... that is) any suggestions how I can solve this? WINDOWS XP Pro: when using my dial-up connection, the system hangs or even freezes. Sometimes I dial through the application itself, i.e. Outlook Express or IE, and that particular program seems to work. Other than that the system is doing sweet all. I have set my internet connection the the required parameters. A friend of mine had the same problem, and it only occurs with dial-up, not broadband. Can somebody please help?

"Clonezilla" (GPL software) for cloning systems
by Guest witan- 8 replies
Does anybody in this group have experience using Clonezilla. A friend suggested it to me, and he thinks highly of it. The info in the Web site http://clonezilla.sourceforge.net/ is impressive: "Clonezilla live is suitable for single machine backup and restore. While Clonezilla server edition is for massive deployment, it can clone many (40 plus!) computers simultaneously." It is free (GPL) Software. "Filesystem supported: ext2, ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs of GNU/Linux, and FAT, NTFS of MS Windows. Therefore you can clone GNU/Linux or MS windows. For these file systems, only used blocks in partition are saved and restored. For unsupported file system, sector-to-sect…

Hope some one can help me... On my newer computer (win XP), the motherboard went bad, i removed the HD (ATA) "hard drive X" and installed on my older computer (Win Me). I made the Win XP "hard drive X' the master and I can start Windows XP but then i have to validate windows, I can't because it is a different computer... All I want is my music, photos and videos stored in the "hard drive X". Is there a way I can do it using some copying software ... maybe?

by Guest ZZMHume- 3 replies

Hello, I my environment, I have a number of Office that are set up the same, except they all have a Different IP Subnet... i.e. 10.10.XXX.YYY Where XXX is different in each Office. Where YYY is a Different Computer in each Office. Each Office has a SHARED Folder for keeping Data on the Primary System (something like a server for storage). My Goal is that have a Script of some sort that will do the following: 1. Run the Same Script on Each Machine, no matter where the system is located 2. Find the IP Address of the system is was presently RAN on, not caring if it was the Primary system or secondary... 3. Finding the Third Octave o…

Disk Is Full When Saving To The Network From Excel
by Guest Malcz86- 1 reply

We have a problem when users try to save spreadsheets to a network drive they get a error message "The disk is full" but the drive has over 30gb of free space. If they save the spreadsheet to their desktop they can then copy into a network location. The problem appears to be intermitent and has appeared on multiple computers with multiple spreadsheets. A few of the computers (but not all which is strange) have several events created in the event log. In the system log they get, "The description for Event ID ( 50 ) in Source ( Mup ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display mes…

Windows Logon Error
by Guest Kevin Butler- 4 replies

Some of my Dell computers have been getting this message lately. I have noticed it started about 1.5 to 2 weeks ago. I am running Win XP Pro SP2 on all of these machines: STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000005 The system has been shutdown. Once I shut the computer down and restart it, this error doesn't come up for quite a few hours but it eventually comes up again. Nothing has changed on any of these systems and even when I have updated them (via Windows Updater), the problem hasn't been solved. I have looked up the documentation but it seems to be lacking f…

Computer powers-down or freezes in stand-by mode
by Guest SLA_personal- 2 replies

I have a Win XP SP2 PC (Gateway P4, 2.2 GHz, 1GB RAM). Recently, it unexpectedly either powers-down or gets into a stand-by mode and requires to re-plug the power cord to reboot. I do not see anything in the event log, and do not get a blue screen during the crash (although it is set to create a dump). I have seen a couple of postings from users having the same issue, but the responses were inconclusive. Any ideas?

About FAT16 file system cache
by Guest Watson- 8 replies
I make a FAT16 file system on ramdisk(Not Hard disk). But I found it's not so timely when writing data to the ramdisk. That means when I copy files to the ramdisk, there will be several seconds' delay after my copy action. The FAT table about the copied-file info is created 2~5 seconds delay. So the question is HOW to disable the file system's cache? In linux OS, there's 'SYNC' command and synchronize time can be set. In WinXP, how to do? Do I need to add something in my ramdisk driver? Thanks your support if you can.

Remember those tests in school where you used a #2 pencil and had to enter each number in its separate cell? So if you enter 123456 they had lines between them. How would I make a cell that has room for six digits? I have a form I print out that we enter numbers from machines that are using a six digit counter. I want to be able to scan them in using OCR. I thought it would help if there were vertical lines in each box so that the numbers are in there correct place. I don't see a way to do that using the properties box. How would I go about this? I have Excel 97 and access to excel 2007. Thanks Russ

Only the first one boots successfully, the second one does not boot at all. OK, here is my boot.ini. I know I need to remove one of them. But I am scared if I remove the wrong one, then I won't be able to start my machine (I don't have a floppy drive). So, please tell me how I can tell which one of the two I need to remove? Thank you! Hi, I installed a Windows XP on my old portable for my litle girl to play games on. I made images (iso) of all the game cds (legaly bought) and installed poweriso to mount all of the games to different virtual drives. Now she can play them without the need for changing cds because she's just a litle too young to trust her with that. There is only one game for which it doesn't work: "Dora danst te hulp" (the english title is "Dora dance to the rescue") from atari. When starting the game it says: "Emulator detected! Please deactivate virtual drive and emulation software." Is there a way to get around this? Can I make Windows XP think that it's not a virtual driv…
