Explorer slow showing folders containing PDF files
by Guest fsb@thefsb.org- 3 replies
I have Windows XP SP2 and Acrobat Pro 7.0.9 on a Dell Precision M65 about 4 months old. Windows Explorer experiences a significant delay displaying the contents of folders that contain large PDF files. Process Explorer shows that during these delays explorer.exe is reading from the disk at about 200 MByte/sec. The thread that's busy during these delays is ntdll.dll!RtlAllocateHeap+0x18c. The duration of the delay is proportional to the total size of the PDF files in the directory. If I rename these files to have, say, .doc extension instead of .pdf then the delay disappears. The delay to display a folder containing 300 MByte of PDF files is about 25 seconds. …

Windows XP - How To Reduce Offline File Synchronization Time
by Guest Anna_Stephanie- 18 replies
Hello All, We having users running Windows XP Pro with SP2. We have their My Documents folder made available offline that points to their home share on our network. The files are set to synchronize at logon, logoff and shutdown. Some users have complained that the synchronization takes a very long time. Most of the time the users that complain about this have a lot of files in their My Documents folder and work mainly on a wireless network connection. I have advised the users to clean (delete) or move their files to the root of the home drive so those files will not synchronize. I have also advised them that working on a wired connection is must faster than a …

How to configure offline files...
by Guest Victoria@DIG- 1 reply

Hello: I'm a new laptop user and therefore new to being able to work offline. I think I may not understand the process. I'd like to be able to have specific folders that are located within MyDocuments (which is located on the network) available offline. However, when I set MyDocuments to be available offline, all subfolders are then set for offline usage. I tried selecting the specific folders, clicking on File, Make folder available offline to uncheck, but it is checked and grayed out. Also, it seems that Access files cannot be made available offline as I receive an error when I try synchronizing. Is this correct? Example of Folder Set Up-- …

Error 1606
by Guest paoloricardo@gmail.com- 2 replies

I keep getting the dreaded "Error 1606 Could not access network location :." (sic) I've tried all the fixes i.e. deleting registry refs to Office 8.0 and 9.0, checking User Shell Folders and Common Administrative Tasks but none works. Also I've no idea what location ":." refers to. Apart from disabling Windows Installer (to stop it popping up randomly) I cannot update my Adobe Reader software. Any miracle workers out there? Thanks

Event ID 4226 along with slowness issues
by Guest Brit2008- 0 replies

We are experiencing issues with our clients with slowness on the network. Some clients that have been off when powered on hang at applying computer settings. The machine needs to be manually powered off and back on again and then it is fine. Other clients are receiving the Event ID 4226, TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connection attempts. These clients are powered on, reach the ctrl, alt, delete screen, user logs in, but then the machine hangs at apply personal settings. I know that this error is a limitation in WinXPSP2 and have seen a third party tool to adjust the 10 connections a second to 50, but …

How do I restore incremental backups?
by Guest OscarVogel- 4 replies
I'm using ntbackup on a Windows 2000 Server. I have finished restoring the big "normal" backup of a shared directory. Now I have a several incremental backups that I need to restore. How do I do that in order to end up with the directory as it was when the last incremental backup was done? I'm guessing that I need to choose "Replace the file on disk only if the file on disk is older". But it worries me the default choice is "Do not replace the file on my computer (recommended)". That doesn't sound logical. Why would I restore if I wasn't wanting to replace files? What am I missing here? BUT MAINLY, how can I restore these incremental backups w/o…

This is an update and redo to avoid confusion. 2-12 -08 Whoops. I had another incident today. Seems in the evening if I leave my computer on I end up with the blue screen of death. Last time (2-10-08) the problem showed 0x~c2 (0x~40, 0x~00, 0x8~00, 0x~00) with comment that C:\windows\system32/imm32.dll is not valid. windows forgets video settings
by Guest Kyle- 4 replies

Hello, Several months ago I reinstalled XP SP2 on system. Ever since then Windows frequently forgets my video settings and goes back to 640x480x4. If I try to reset the screen resolution to its normal mode (800x512x32), the screen blanks, and stays at 640x480x4. To get windows back to 800x512x32 the following sometimes works: Select 1600x1024x4 reboot Windows boots and is at 640x480x8. If get this far then I can switch to 800x512x32 without a problem and the setting stays until I reboot. However about 60% of the time I get 640x480x4 and switching to 800x512 won't succeed. I have tried renaming the monitor7.inf, renaming display.inf, deleting t2…

Changing to 800x600 causes signal loss
by Guest Tony Johnson- 2 replies
We’re having an issue with the XP video driver. When placing the display in a resolution of 800x600, the video drops out and we have to use safe mode to choose a higher resolution. The preinstalled video driver is the most recent. I just checked the Intel website. We were able to partially resolve it by loading the correct driver for the monitor (Dell 2007fp in our case) so that instead of failing every time, it fails maybe 1 in 10 times. I'm still looking into this problem but hoped you may have seen this before and can offer some advice.

Diskclean Automation
by Guest Maurice- 6 replies

Currently using XP pro with all service packs. After reading KB Article 315246 I have read the article but am still left with questions. I see the option for sageset and sagerun but do not see the actual syntax for entering a statement at the command line. The article states that one may set a [sageset/sagerun] number from zero to 65535. I want to automate diskcleanup to clear the Temporary Internet files, offline webpages, recycle bin, webclient/publisher temporary files. I would want this to occur twice daily and would prefer to control the times. At the run command line what would I need to enter?.This article is poorly written. Guidance sought

Network Printer
by Guest Don- 7 replies

This has probably been covered a million times before but.... I am using XP and have a network printer which I use for printing from a dos program by using: net use lpt1: \\computername\printername /persistent:yes this worked fine but now I have removed the computer and connected the printer directly to my router. The printer still works fine from windows programs. What command do I now use to print in DOS to lpt1? Do I replace the "computername" with the network address (192.168.0.101)? There appears to be no sharing option now for the printer. Thanks for any help.
