network printer problem
by Guest zhengquan- 5 replies

Hello, I am thinking of solving this problem, the lab in the group has several windows xp computers, they have public ip. Now we have 2 printers connected to the internet, both of them have public Ip. The computers and the printers are not connected by routers. Now the problem is, I need to spare a internet port for other use, so I am thinking of using a router to connect the 2 printers and let the routher have a public ip, the 2 printers will have private ip assigned by the router. I want to know in this situation, is it possible for other computers to access the two printers because they now do not have public ip, they are in a subnet behind the router. …

xp disc setup files
by Guest witsend- 10 replies
Hello all. I have a silly little problem that has a simple solution to be sure, but I'll be darned if I can come up with it. Basically, I have downloaded the setup files from the windows xp disc and now when I turn on the computer, its giving me the option to start windows as I normally would, or to start windows xp setup, which will invariably mess up the machine if others in the family stumble across this option. Where oh where are these setup files on my machine and how do I get rid of them? Thank you muchly!

In 'My Computer' it reads the DVD/CD-RW Drive ("D"). When I 'Send To' and in the written phase, it begins to transfer for several minutes, and stops. I received the following: Cannot complete the CD writing wizard. There was an error in the writing process. I change the 650 MB CD-RW and received the same response. Robert

Re-installing Windows XP Pro OEM on new hard drive
by Guest obi-wan- 1 reply

I have a 3 year old computer that I built with a RAID 0 boot drive (dual SATA). Last weekend one of the two drives failed. I managed to get it functioning again and backed up all of my data (My Documents, Desktops) to an IDE drive before the boot drive crashed again. I have two new drives on order, which I am going to configure as a RAID 1 (mirrored). I have read that I may get an error that the Registration Key may not work on a second install (to prevent software piracy). Before I remove my old drives and install the new ones, is there anything I should do first?

Oh yeah, my sound card is creative sound blaster live, I know it's old and not supported anymore, during this I found my disgnostics software (creative) wouldn't work either (not found)

Java?
by Guest Pat- 6 replies
I've had Windows XP for a long time. Recently I am receiving popups saying Java Updates are available to download and there is a Java icon in my tray. This is the first I've heard of Java, don't know what it is nor if I need it. However, I see in Add-Remove Programs it is listed "Java 2 Runtime Environment SEv1.4.2-03" so guess I've had it all along and was unaware of its existence. My question...is your advice that I get the downloads or, alternatively, delete the Java Program. Many thanks. (If I understood its function I could make an intelligent choice myself.)

Hi Win XP SP2 I've a USB portable hard disk. When deleting files/folders from the drive they been automatically put into a 'Recycled' folder. When I delete a folder from that one, they're just recreated with new names. How can I get rid of the whole folder & prevent it being used in future? Also, the drive has created a 'System Volume Information' folder. I guess it's for restore. I didn't create it. Is it safe to remove. Thanks for any help. Dave F.

Recover IE 7.0 websites visited?
by Guest Ed Flecko- 5 replies
I have an employee who's been surfing "questionable" sites, and infected his PC with some nasty viruses. He uses IE 7.0, clears his sites, cache, etc., and SWEARS he hasn't been hanging out at these sites. Is there any way of recovering a list of sites that a user has visited in IE 7.0 (like there used to be with IE 6.0) after he's cleared his cache, history, etc.? Also, system restore is not turned on in his case, so I can't use that. Suggestions??? Thanks.

For some reason I can't get windows to open and attach them in Outlook express to send my files that windows made smaller. For Example: I have some pics that are 2048 X 1536 Pixels and when I go to send them windows asks that if I wish to make them smaller for email. I click yes, the process starts, makes them smaller and then closes. It does not open a new create mail page in Outlook express THX

Boot Log
by Guest Devon Sedlydins- 5 replies
Sometimes my Dell Windows XP system will hang on boot up, but not always. I know how to hit F8 and ask for a boot log to be created, but I don't want to do that every time. How can I create a log so that I can see at what point the system fails, on those occasions when things go wrong? When failing, it will hang after the Desktop icons have been created, at which point the pointer/hourglass freezes and forces me to unplug the machine, since neither ctrl+alt+delete nor the on/off button will function.
