Virus Alert in System restore 1 2
by Guest TheSlaz- 31 replies
Just removed a virus from my son's computer. Went to restore the computer from a good clean point and I noticed that all the System Restore points are named "Virus Alert: Software Distribution service 3:00 A.M." Concerned about the "Virus Alert" part of the description. Can I safely restore; or is this telling me that there is a virus in the restore point?

Hi: I updated Sysinternals Process Monitor to Version 2.0 and now every time that I open Process Monitor 2.0 I get the following warning: "The version of Dbghelp.dll configures does not support the Microsoft Symbol Server. Please download and install the Microsoft Tools for Windows to get a version that does". I have downloaded and installed the WinDbg, but I have no clue as to what to do next. I also installed all the Symbols in the C\windows\symbols folder. Thanks for any help.

I keep getting this error message every day: -------------------------------------- Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error!! Program: C\Programm Files\VERITAS Software\Update Manager\sgtray.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. ------------------------------------------- I've figured out that this file relates to the "Check for updates" function of the Record Now software that came with my PC. I get the error if I invoke that function, when I click on the sgtray.exe file in Windows Explorer, in addition to its coming up on its own …

by Guest RJK- 2 replies

What a mystery XP user accounts - credentials etc. ! On a XP Home PC that has only ever had 1 administrator a/c ....I tried making a limited account, and as soon as looging into it - there were lots of shortcuts to programs that I don't want the limited use to play around with e.g. AVG 8.0 ....and I was unable to delete it / them from the limited users desktop. How do you control / add / remove program shortcuts from the limited users desktop ? Also, IE7 reported several HP faults e.g HP web-page printing errors or something like that. I don't need to prevent the limited user from using IE7 - however, why is installed HP software / IE plugins…

Re-enable 'Recent Files" Lists in all programs
by Guest Cornish-writer- 2 replies
One of my super-security programs set something in my Registry or in an .INI file so that none of my programs have the ability to display their "Recent Files" lists from the "File" menu. The option for displaying or not displaying the list is grayed out in programs such as Word, Excel, etc. This means it's been disabled at the System level. I want to see my recently opened files in all my programs. Can anyone help?

Every time I open OE6, either from IE7 or an outlook express icon on my desktop, it acts like it is going to start, then displays my contact list in the left corner, then hangs up and does nothing. I close it with the red x or right click at the bottom and it says the program is not responding.. I hit "end" and then restart it again and it opens up fine.. Go figure!!! Any ideas??? -- Paintwagon

Aloha all. I recently went to look in my Temporary Internet Files folder, and an error saying "Your Current Security Settings Do Not Allow This Action." I've gone in to this folder many times before, although not recently. Obviously something changed on my system, but I do not know what. How can I fix these security settings so I can access all my files and folders? I am the administrator, and the only user of this computer. Many thanks!

When attempting a shut down I am presented with the usual message not to turn off computer. The System is now hung on "Installing update 1 of 24". The computer has been in this state for several hours and I have no idea what to do. I have searched for a solution but have not seen any resolution. I am using WinXP Pro SP 2 on a 2.8 Ghz System. Can anyone off a safe solution? What would happen if I turn off at this time? Thanks. Jake

Help with EFS

Hello (Apologies for crosspost, I do not know where to post it. Searched something similar without result.) I'm new to EFS. I would understand how to use it and to expect from it. I have read many sites and many theory but not much I have found in practice. I have done the following things. I have crypted some files using the property tab of a directory. After, I have exported the private key in a separate file. I have set the flag delete if successful export, and it told me something like "you can not anymore delete or decrypt..." I am confused now, because I CAN STILL open and do everything with these files. So, what is the point of exporting …
