Need Help Formatting and Reinstalling Windows XP
by Guest patetc- 3 replies

I want to reformat my hard drive and reinstall Windows XP. I have the XP CD. I have partitioned my hard drive into C and D drives but I only want to format C and just leave D alone. Can this be done? My reason for doing this is to clean up some applications that don't work correctly and I've been unable to fix them. Reformatting at this point seems to be my only option. I have already copied all the directories and files to an external hard drive so I can reinstall them easier. Thanks for any help on this. Pat

Start menu items and commands typed in Run dialog not working...
by Guest deostroll- 7 replies
Hi, Suppose if I want to start a program which exists in my start menu, it does not work. It opens up the dialog that allows us to choose which program we want to execute. It is behaving as if this file is not associated with an exe. Even an exe file is not getting file- associated. Moreover, when I try to change the system time/date it throws a error message box saying Cannot find file c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe This sounds like a virus problem to me. Any idea on tackling this without the use of antivirus software...? -deostroll

Hi All, We have just begun a migration of legacy and new PC's. Both the systems are needed to run in parrallel for at least a year due to SLA etc. We use a 4 port KVM switch (which has USB and PS2) connections. When we plug in the new PC's to the USB port there is no problem. When we conntect the old NT4 legacy PC's to the KVM we can't get the mouse to work. We have attempted to reboot while connected but still not joy. Can anyone offer any advise please. Thanks. -- Flinty

Winidows loads to a blank (black) screen with just a mouse pointer
by Guest JordanL- 6 replies

I am taking a look at a Dell laptop for a friend. They were 'downloading' iTunes (i'm not sure if they were actually downloading or trying to install iTunes) and their laptop, running Vista, froze. On restart they got the 'computer was not shut down correctly' menu, and starting up in safe mode or normally brings a blank screen with just the mouse pointer visible. The mouse pointer responsds to touchpad movement. The windows splash screen shows, and when the screen saver comes on it is visible. Ctrl-Alt-Delete and Ctrl-Shift-ESC have no effect. I have seen several posts about this online but with no real solution for the ones that the task manager is n…

To top it off whenever we put a cd rom in the drive it will not run it on the computer because it doesnt recognize the drive. There is only a c drive now and it is driving me nuts here. A friend tried system restore multiple times and we located the date the problem occured but the system will not restore we get a message stating that it cannot be restored to the earlier date. Any ideas? Yes I have the Cd Rom that came with the computer however I cannot restore from Cd Rom if the…

In Windows XP Pro SP3 (don't know if it happens in other versions), if I attempt to Empty an empty Recycle Bin, it asks me if I want to delete 'WINDOWS'. I was smart enough to say NO. Shouldn't that option be grayed out when your recycle bin is already empy?

I have XP Home on my main computer and Windows 2000 Pro on a wireless remote computer. Sympatico is my ISP and has provided Bell Canada "Security Manager" (includes firewall) and a wireless "ZWire" router. I have set up "Shared Documents and Printers" on both computers. I am able from the main computer to sign on to the remote computer and can see "Shared Documents" as well as printers installed on the remote computer. However, the reverse does not work, i.e. the remote computer does not have access to the main computer "Shared Documents" and printer. Windows Firewall has been configured on both computers to allow access to "Shared Documents & Printers"…

Problem After Upgrading
by Guest patetc- 1 reply

Even since reinstalling Windows XP and upgrading to SP3, I have an additional directory under "documents and Settings." I did have User Accounts and My Name. Now there is a third one, Administrator. I can't get into certain programs because I get a message telling me that the program has not been installed for this user. I am the only person using this computer and I am the administrator as well. I have made changes to allow me full access but I still don't have it. My favorites don't show up in Internet Explorer either. I need help to get this back to normal. System restore won't work--I already tried that. Pat

When I was using 98se, I had the default icon set to %1, and this would cause windows explorer, to show every file icon that was a picture file, to show the picture as the icon. How do I do this for XP Pro?

In the System Restore tab of System Properities, the only "available drives" are my 'D' & 'E' drives. How do I get System Restore to monitor 'C' again? Don't know what happened but when I went to restore to a previous point, this is the dialog box that popped up: --------------------------- System Restore --------------------------- Changes made to drive(s) C:\ after this point cannot be reversed because the drive was either excluded from System Restore monitoring, or was turned off or removed. ---------------------------

I`m not sure where this should be posted but if not the right area perhaps someone can direct me where to post. I have a computer running XP Pro SP2. I`ve messed up quite a few of the keyboard keys monkeying around where I didn`t know what I was doing. At any rate I would like to just get back to the standard keyboard setup as it was origionally. Is there a way of doing this with my small amount of computer expertise (and your help)? TIA

User name assigned to a new profile!
by Guest spamlet- 10 replies

Hi, This seems a similar problem to that noted by Bea below: as yet unanswered. (Is something going around?) Old Dell laptop, XPHome. On logging out of one profile and logging back on in my normal (administrator) one, 'userenv' in event log says a 'temporary' profile was substituted, and it would disappear on logging out. Not a bit of it! Now all I get after log on is the blue basic dell screen and a handful of standard desktop icons. Windows explorer shows that my folders and files are still there, but I cannot find any way to reassociate them with my user id, which now seems to be permanently referenced to this unwanted empty new one. Ther…

Boot problem - stuck at "Windows is starting up..."
by Guest 2Tall- 3 replies

I can get to Safe Mode, but once I choose any almost any selection, the computer then starts its boot sequence. When I get to the blue screen that says "Windows is starting up..." it just stops. I have restarted the machine about a dozen times. Twice I received the blue screen of death. One listed a problem with "beep.sys" - a problem with PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA and later another blue screen of death said my video driver failed to initialize. How do I get past the "Windows is starting up..."screen?
