Hi, Is it possible to specify a user-defined usable area of the XP (SP3) desktop where shortcuts, files etc. will be placed and where the rest of the desktop area that s not user-defined is off limits and is not recognised by the system as usable and therefore is kept clear of any icons or files. Thanks for any info!

What do you use for burning?
by Guest Mark G.- 13 replies

Running XP Pro and have been using Nero for a while, but recently, it seems to have issues and it has always been more complicated than my needs dictate. I know you can burn to DVD and CD from within the OS, but I do not really like that approach. Therefore I was hoping some of you could let me/us know what you use to burn to DVD's and CD's with? Whether it be freeware or low cost is fine. Just trying to see what others use that is reliable, easy to use, and gets the job done without a bunch of buttons or confusion and without errors. Thanks for the input!

I have a situation. I have both MS Internet Explorer and Firefox active on my XP SP2 machine. I have Firefox set as the default browser because I prefer Firefox. I want to execute Verizon's speed test at (http://www2.verizon.net/micro/speedtest/java/ and it appears that it will not run under Firefox, but will under IE. I have a desktop shortcut created to do the test, but it wants to use Firefox because it is the default browser. How do I permanently make this shortcut and only this shortcut use IE? Thanks -GECKO

by Guest AliceZ- 5 replies

I have WinXPsp3 and just downloaded/installed IE 7. I notice when I open IE 7 and my (google) homepage shows, I can then go to Tools and Windows update to check for any critical updates. However, after I have checked and downloaded the updates, I click the back (blue)arrow (uppoer left corner of screen) and expect to be allowed to go back to my Google homepage. However, I can't get back to my google homepage. I have to close the Windows update page and then open IE 7 again so I can get my google homepage. If I go to other sites while using google (in IE7), I can always click the back arrow and be returned to the google page. Why am I not allowed to do it …

Got cheap Storm Surge sound card that Loses sound on Restarting. If I open tray icon & make any adjustment it comes on ok. Onboard sound originally with it I disabled in DManager but didnt remove. Any ideas except 'update driver'? Your help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks- bye- Larry ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A working unsecure OS is infinitely better than non-working secure OS. Can’t open files from “My Documents” after copying to them to DVD
by Guest peter_greve- 11 replies

About a year ago I had a laptop supplied by my employer where I among my work stuff had a lot of private documents, pictures, etc. I used Nero burning program and burnt all the files from the path "C:\Documents and Settings\Peter\”My documents” and "Desktop” and “Favorites” to a DVD Now I checked the burned DVD to ensure that the files had been copied and working. It was possible to open the files on the same computer. Today – a year later - I need to use some of the documents in “My documents” and tried to open them with their associated programs - Word, Excel, Acrobat Reader, etc. - and all I get is an error message saying that the files are dama…

Can I do a Batch (.bat) file to change the screensaver time?
by Guest magmike- 8 replies
I would super love to be able to have a shortcut on my desktop or quick launch bar to change my screen saver active time. Because it is password protected, I like it to activate within the minimum time (1 minute) when I leave my desk - but when I am at my desk, it is annoying to have to log on every time I get distracted from computer for more than one minute. And clicking a button or shortcut would certainly be easier than logging off, or going to display settings everytime my boss calls me into his office or I go to the restroom. Does anyone know how to do this in a batch file or some other way? Thanks in advance for your help! magmike

Hi, No matter what utility I have tried i can not make html shortcuts appear with anything other than the generic shortcut icon. Thanks, Lee G. xp sp3

System Configuration Utility message on startup
by Guest sheana- 4 replies
Over the past few days when I bootup my computer, the System Configuration Utility window pops up. It has the following message: You have used the Sys Config Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts. .....is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing the message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts. Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the SCU. I don't recall making any changes to startup..Can I just select Normal Startup mode, or is something else going on and if so, what should I do? Thanks in advance, sheana

Sometimes it seems to do this, and other times it is does not go into hibernation even after hours of non-use Does anybody know why it works sometimes and not others? Thanks, Bob
