We have a rather adventurous teen. We'd like to limit the number of applications on her desktop and password restrict IE7. When I set up a new desktop account it randomly included a number of applications, including IE7, and it wouldn't let me delete any.

PROBLEMS with virus riddled laptop
by Guest Richard- 13 replies

A colleague of mine made the mistake of letting his secretary stick her memory stick into his laptop's USB port. Totally shagged! So I managed to get it to connect to the internet again, installed the latest version of AVG Internet Security, BUT ..... some major problems remain. Please do NOT answer, unless you have a known solution .... I do NOT want "have you tried...." or "I think this may help...." type responses. Many thanks in advance for your understanding this. FYI, the lapton is running XP sp 2. The problems left are:- 1. Clicking on drive name (or even right clicking) does not open/explore the drive . Instead I get the "Open with" wind…

Hackers are here. Where are you???
by Guest Neuerung Technologies- 0 replies

Hi Greetings!!! Hackers are on move stop them before they enter your network. Beat hackers at their own game attend our training and excel in hacking and its counter measures. If you want to stop hackers from invading your network, first you've got to invade their minds. Computers around the world are systematically being victimized by rampant hacking. This hacking is not only widespread, but is being executed so flawlessly that the attackers compromise a system, steal everything of value and completely erase their tracks within 20 minutes. The goal of the ethical hacker is to help the organization take preemptive measures against malicious attacks b…

Keyboard Mystery
by Guest Blake Kaos- 23 replies
I have an IBM laptop running XP Pro, where the keyboard does not seem to work (in regular windows mode) - no key works at all. However, when I go to Device Manager, the keyboard does not report any errors; when I run PC-Doctor (which is a part of the supplied IBM diagnostics) it reports no errors and indeed the keyboard works just fine for navigation and option selection. In fact, when the laptop boots up, it requires a log-in password and the keyboard works perfectly to enter the password. This leads me to think that keyboard per se is not defective. Once it has booted however, the keyboard becomes totally non-responsive. What could be wrong and how …

Granting IIS Rights to Power Users?
by Guest Jason Heydasch- 1 reply
Is there a way to enable "Power Users" in Windows XP to be able to view the default Web site properties in IIS? I can login, as "administrator," to my Webmaster's IIS console on his PC and view the default Web site properties just fine. However, when he logs in as himself, he can open IIS but he can't even see the default Web site's properties. Is there a way to enable him to view this without making him an administrator on the computer?

Shortcut to a UNC path or network drive letter over WAN connection
by Guest MattNeedsHelpPlease- 1 reply
So, we have a number of remote offices that currently map a drive back to the main office server over slower WAN links (2-3Mbit or less). It is a fact that the CIFS protocol does not work well over a WAN connection and mapping drives uses network overhead. So we could use a shortcut on the users desktop to the UNC path i.e. \\servername\share. My question is: Is it better for network purposes to use a shortcut to a UNC path or a mapped drive?

by Guest Tester- 4 replies

HI there, I have a windows XP Pro machine with 4 shares and 8 PCs with windows 2000 Pro having the shares mapped to them, using 4 windows login accounts on a LAN and domain. These machines are on a remote subnet with lower speed links to where the domain controllers reside. 1. I am getting "No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as this computer can accept" on XP sharing machine. 2. On the Windows 2000 Pro client machines I am getting Microsoft Windows network: The local device name is already in use. This connection has not been restored" when trying to access a share of the XP machine…

by Guest timandjanet- 1 reply

I am using XP SP3.0 and I performed a Search, but then could not find in Windows Explorer all of the items listed in the Search. I already "Show hidden files and folders" in all folders. I am the Owner and Administrator of this computer. How can I find and delete these files? In addition, I cannot delete some files from a program I no longer subscribe to/use. I get the error, "Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use." How can I delete these?

Can't use Flash with IE
by Guest the K- 5 replies

I have IE 6 and whenever I go to Adobe's site to install flash, I run the installer and get no messages that something went wrong. However, when I try to view videos, I get the message that I have Javascript turned off or I don't have the latest flash player. I went to tools/internet options/advanced but didn't notice anything about Javascript. This doesn't make sense, because I can view flash videos in Firefox fine.

monotor does not turn off after 9/9/08 updates
by Guest sjcinnamond- 4 replies

I have Windows XP Home SP3 on a P4 1.7GHz, 1GB RAM computer. Graphics card is a legacy ATI Rage 128 PRO AGP 4X TMDS with the drivers provided by Windows. I did not download anything from ATI's site when XP was clean-installed. All has worked smoothly since the installation of SP3. After the latest Microsoft updates, however, my monitor no longer turns off despite me settings for it to do so. All was well with power management before the updates. Has anyone else had this trouble after the updates? Any ideas how to remedy this?

I was hoping someone could help me with this whole process. I tried using nLite software to place drivers on with winxp install CD and I keep getting same "Cannot Find Hard Disk Error". This is to due to the fact that Xp does not load SATA RAID Drivers during Windows Installation. -No I dont Have a floppy drive or even a blank floppy!- I have a Sony Vaio Model: PCG-384L Series: VGN-FZ140E I found the right SATA Drivers for my HD. I guess what I'm asking is if there is any other software or boot utility that I can use that will successfully load the SATA drivers or emulate an "A" floppy drive. I'm open to other alternatives. -Daniel

Folders views keep changing
by Guest SunshineDi- 17 replies

Folders do not keep the viewing options we'd like. They keep resetting to "Detailed" and keep resetting the size of the window to 3/4 the page rectangular. So say for instance, we have one folder on our desktop that has 5 files in it. When it comes up I'd like for it to view "Icons" and to be a long rectangular box at the bottom of my monitor screen. It used to do this, but now it views as "Detailed" and a bigger window in the middle of my monitor. I can reset it and it will keep that setting (mostly) until we reboot (which every night we turn off the computer). I think I remember a long time ago having this problem on our other computer and som…
