Windows shuts down when should restart
by Guest John Trauger- 0 replies
I support an automation lab. Sometimes systems seem to shut down when they are supposed to restart. I have never caught a system in the act, but I see it in the automation logs. The most common time for this to happen is switching between OSes. Each system has 4 OSes (xp,vista, 32,64, mix 'n match). The system uses batch files to set up a change in OS. The shutdown command used in the batch file is shutdown -r -f Are there known cases where a XP or vista machine shuts down instead of rebooting? Googling this sort of thing gets me huge numbers of useless (for my current problem) "my windows won't shut down" pages.

opening sound corrupted? 1 2
by Guest Jo-Anne- 35 replies

This is a trivial problem, but I wonder if there's something I can do to fix it. Ever since I received my new Dell notebook last month (WinXP, SP2 then but SP3 now), the Start Windows sound begins OK but then has some hesitations in it toward the end. All the other sounds are normal. I'd be grateful for suggestions. Thank you! Jo-Anne

Export e-mail messages from Vista's Windows Mail back to XP Pro?
by Guest PH Graphics- 3 replies
After nearly a year of occasional crashes and constant frustration I am taking Vista off of my new laptop and going back to XP Pro (which is already on all 5 of the other PC's and/or workstations in my office.) I've gathered all of the XP drivers and exported Vista's "Contacts" folder as a .csv file. Vista would only export IE's "Favorites" as a .htm file. Will XP be able to import that info, or is there a better way to get my "Favorites" over to XP? MOST IMPORTANTLY, how do I get my e-mail messages from Vista's Windows Mail format back to XP? Windows Mail will only export the messages in Microsoft Exchange format. Will I be able to import that fil…

HP ScanJet 8250 Incongruence
by Guest Bob Frolek- 1 reply
At location A I use SJ4850. At location B I use SJ8250. I use the same laptop (HP Pavilion dv9000) at both locations. This system has worked well in the past. I’m now at location B. Suppose I scan a fully printed A4 sheet. I see an A4 image, but the printed sheet has been “pushed” to the right and upwards, lopping part of it off, while leaving corresponding blank space at the left and the bottom. Have tried reinstalling the HP drivers to no effect. The defect seems to be at the HP end as four different software scanning programs give the same result. Is there a way of regaining congruence? Is SJ8250 dying?

MS Natural Ergo Keyboard 4000 Sticky/Stiff Spacebar Fix
by Guest Paul Michaels- 0 replies

I bought a newer MS Natural Ergo Keyboard 4000 to replace my very old white MS Natural Keyboard Elite. I was very disappointed to find that the space bar was stiff or sticky. So I searched the web for all the possible solutions. Here's what I found and tried: 1. lubricate plastic posts on underside of key (didn't work) 2. twist metal sway bar away from each other slightly (acceptable) 3. remove metal sway bar completely (acceptable) I took pictures of the procedures. Here's the gallery - http://www.paulstravelpictures.com/MS-Natural-Ergo-Keyboard-Sticky-Spacebar-Fix/ Hopefully this will help some of you that have this keyboard. Cheers, Paul Michaels …

Windows product activation
by Guest Bdbstr- 1 reply

When I log on to my system and enter the password, a screen comes up asking "This copy of windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on" Do you want to activate Y or N. When I answer yes it takes me to a screen that states "Windows is already activated" Click OK to exit. When I click on OK it takes me back to the log on screen. I have read some of the other responses for a similar messsage. I can not get to the start>run system because I can't log on. I have looked at a wpa.dbl file but I cant change it in safe mode. Any input? Do I reinstall XP? If I do will I lose all my files? I have tried to restore the system to a pr…

Accessing a USB Drive
by Guest Tom D- 3 replies

I have a couple USB hard drives and have not had this issue before. All of my drives with the exception of 1 drive works fine. My problem drive is recognized by the system and displays a drive letter in windows explorer but it is blue in color as opposed to black like the other drives. When I try to access the drive it shows no files. I know there are files on the drive because I have copied files to the drive and when I look at the properties it shows that there are about 50GB of data on the drive but I cannot see or access the data. I use this drive as a place to back up data files. This hasn't been an issue in the past and was trying to figure our i…

Screen Saver, Power Settings, DVD player (XP Media Center)
by Guest Westeban- 2 replies

My Screen Saver doesn't work, nor will the monitor turn off at the intervals I've set. I've examined the settings many times to make sure they don't conflict, and all is as it should be. I had this problem once before, and an HP Rep guided me to a place on Microsoft where I downloaded something to repair this. I've searched, but can't find it again without assistance. Thanks!

I want "Multiple" monitor for both 1 and 2
by Guest childofthe1980s- 1 reply
Hello: In the Display settings in Windows XP Control Panel, the drop-down list for monitor 1 and 2 read "(Multiple)". Now, only 1 says "(Mulitple)". #2 says "Plug and Play". I want them both to say "(Multiple)" in the drop-down list. I wish that I had never played with these settings, and I cannot remember how to switch them back. I don't care about those two checkboxes at the bottom. I just want each of the two selections in the drop-down to red "(Multiple)" ,like it was in the beginning. Would rebooting help? If not, how do I fix this? Thanks! childofthe1980s

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300D-01N, Model No: PSLC8C-01N019 and I am downgrading to XP Pro from Vista. I have formatted the hard drive then tried to boot with my XP Pro that already has SATA drivers as I had created it earlier but I get this Stop Error 0X0000007B (0XF78D2524, 0XC0000034). Would I need different drivers for the hard drive??? Thanks in advance for the help.

Windows XP Professional

I have a desktop computer that has Windows XP Professional isatlled on it. It was user-installed. Right now , i am having issues with Windows XP trying to load. It comes to the WINDOWS XP loading screen with the green scrolling bar below the XP logo. As it attempts to load, it freezes before the screen switches from the welcome screen to the logon screen. What are the causes of this and how can it be overcome so that Windows will start normally? NOTE: Safe mode does work. Restore has been attempted but it can't get passed that little bump as XP is loading -- Jeremy

HELP with scheduled tasks
by Guest jhleslie@googlemail.com- 10 replies

Hello! I have some important files on my computer that need backing up daily, there is a hard disk attached and a very nice young man created a thing called BACKUP.BAT which works perfectly. It took him about 45 seconds of furious typing. It copies everything from my computer to the hard disk, all the files that have changed, or been created, perfectly. All I have to do is double click it. I wanted this to happen at the same time every day so the nice young man said as he left the office 'just set up scheduled tasks'. I have been trying to do this ever since but it wouldn't run, then eventually, acting on a hunch, I discovered that it is because I don't hav…

Registering previously installed Windows XP Home Edition

Months ago I installed and registered my OEM Windows XP Home Edition on an older computer. I just installed it on my new computer but I haven't registered it yet. Do I have to do anything to de-activate my old registration before I can register my new version? If so what would that be?
