Copying Folders with No Files
by Guest mcp6453- 4 replies

I'm trying to make a copy of a folder on my XP SP3 data drive by dragging it and dropping it onto a USB drive connected to the same computer. For some reason that I don't understand, when Windows Explorer encounters a folder with no files in it, it throws up an error and then stops. If I kill the folder and try again, WE throws up on the next folder with no files. Sure, there is no downside in deleting all folders with no files in them, but there are many, many folders on the drive. Please help me understand why WE would choke on copying and folder with no files and whether there is a solution for copying all of the folders (including the zero-byte on…

Resoring XP Boot Ability?
by Guest Ross M. Greenberg- 1 reply

I had a dual boot system: XP Pro/Vista Ultimate. Then I ran some buggy partitioning software. Fortunately I had full backups on an external USB drive. I restored the Vista partition without a problem. The data files on the XP Pro partition were restored as well. But the bootable portion of XP Pro didn't make it. When the system boots I get the choice of booting from Windows Vista (the default) or the "Earlier Version of Windows" which is not bootable. What do I need to restore the dual-boot capabilities? Thanks! Ross

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.
by Guest Marcel Cox- 2 replies

This is a Windows XP professional SP3 workstation. Since about 2 weeks, I'm no longer able to install new problems that use the msi installer. When I try to install a new program, the following message gets displayed: The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assitance. I have tried an install of an MSI with logging enabled, and the log shows the following (just one line): MSI © (44:2C) [20:47:52:390]: Failed to connect to server. Error: 0x80040154 At the same time as the windows installer, windows…

Command problem?
by Guest Vanessa- 2 replies
When pressing a key, it has to be pressed 2-3 seconds before it displays in the document. This is in at least two different programs. It is possible that the shift key was pressed before the problem began. So I am thinking it may be a command, but not sure since it was someone else's computer who is encountering the problem. Thank you for any help.

Ok, while listening to audio on my Windows Media player, V 11.0, my audio on the WMP AND my system is completely muted immediatly after arriving at websites such as weatherchannel.com, atlantafalcons.com, or any website that appears to be running some type of Java or extraneous video or graphics....Now, sometimes it will happen and sometimes it won't. But when it does happen, it ALWAYS occurs after I have just arrived at an "offending" site and usually just after IE has just blocked a pop-up. The audio never returns unless I restart my system...Now, sometimes the audio returns after I close IE but it is very rare...I have checked all my connections, cord…

No. You can provide a real email address in Reply-to and ask to be replied to via email but such requests are usually rejected. If you use a REAL newsreader like XNews, any replies to your posts are highlighted and "jumped to" when you update the group headers. You can't ask for much more than that. -- Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything. - Josef Stalin

Can't uninstall Microsoft Student 2006!!
by Guest Luvrsmel- 20 replies
Add/Remove programs shows the program but just gives me how much use it has...There are NO remove options. So I tried to reinstall it using the original cd and it says its already installed and that if I want it removed, to go to Add/Remove in control panel to perform that function. I'm really frustrated because its a huge program taking up a lot of Hard Drive Space and the worst is MS doesn't support the 2006 version anymore and there are no updates. Could someone please tell me how to get this forsaken program off my computer? Should I manually start deleting MS Student 2006 folders? TIA

Want to reinstall windows XP using CD
by Guest Hari- 5 replies

Hi, Im having lots of issues with my computer and virtually unable to work. Logging to windows XP (SP2, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB SATA hard disk) takes atleast 30 minutes and that too after navigating through couple of errors (blue screen, autochk.exe missing and so on) etc. Im not able to run any programs after logging on (associations lost). I have copied relevant files (my documents, favourites, personal excel macros) from C drive to other drives in the same disk and now would like to reinstall XP in C drive. When I try booting through CD drive, the set-up begins and I get a message in the bottom saying "press F6 if you need to install any third-party or RAID…

Strange problem
by Guest Ronin4444- 2 replies

I gave my old computer to my sister. I did a clean reinstall of XP home edition and had some problems with some logon files not getting copied (msgina.dll was one of them) XP wouldn't start. I did a repair from the CD and cleared the problems up. I then couldn't activate the OS over then net. Called Microsoft and got it to activate over the phone. Then it wouldn't do any updates. Trying to get this solved I noticed that the Hard drive was 75% full. This should be impossible since I just reformatted the drive during the reinstall. No files show in My Documents, My Pictures, My Music or anywhere else. Nothing shows up in program files either. BUT…

Digital certificate trustability
by Guest Jaelani- 11 replies
Hello, Many program files such as EXEs, DLLs, OCXs etc. have embeded digital certificate viewable from their file property dialog. I know that when a file's certificate is no longer valid (not expired), it means that it somehow has been modified. Correct me if I'm wrong. But any programmer that know how to properly embed a certificate can use fake names in the certificate (e.g. Symantec, Google, Microsoft, etc.) or look-alike names since anyone can make their own valid certificate. So my question is, how do I know if a certificate really does come from the intended source? What can I do to check the trustability of a digital certificate? Here's an example…

I am running Windows XP SP3 and have reached a stage where Windows won't load at all, I get the following message:- Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt C\Windows\system32\config\System It then goes on to say use the CD Rom, but like most people, I don't have it, my PC came with XP preinstalled. Can anyone advise how to resolve this issue. I can't get it to boot in safe mode or anything else. I have tried various back-up CD's that I have prepared for such an emergency but they don't work either. Can I get a copy of the installation CD anywhere or download it and burn it to CD? Re: Over 4 million highjacked PC's My little broadband icon in the system tray sometimes sometimes lights up with activity even though I'm not on-line - my wireless router is always on with my PC by the way. I've read that way over 4 million PC's have been highjacked. My question is: how can one tell if one has been highjacked and how can we stop them doing it again? Thanks - Andy
