I am in a “catch 22” situation with the WIN XP recovery console password. I have a laptop with WIN XP PRO and received a blue screen “Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate “ error. I am trying to follow KB307545 “How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting” The Problem: I am trying to start the Recovery console from my WIN XP install disk. I can get all the way to hitting “R” to start the recovery console and select 1 for C:\Windows. Then I am asked for the administrator’s password. I hit “enter” and I get …

I ran CHKDSK on my Fat 32 D:\drive and it left a file fragment in a folder on the drive. I ran CHKDSK by right clicking the drive selecting Properties and then Tools tab and selecting Error Checking. Which notified me that in order to run it will do so after the next reboot. The file is File0000.chk RecoveredFileFragment 4kb. What do I do with this file fragment? And is this a bad thing that it was found?

Help with IE8 beta
by Guest LMO- 9 replies
Aloha all. I installed IE8 beta, and now something odd happens on some of my pages (ABC News, for instances). When there is a photo with a caption, the caption at first appears correctly, then moves up over the photo and I cannot read the caption. I cannot find a switch in the options that might control this. I was able to remove IE8 Beta in the Control Panel, but now cannot reinstall IE7. Can anyone help me either fix the text problem, of reinstall IE7? Thanks!

Startup failed with appmain.sdb
by Guest Stan Hilliard- 7 replies

At startup of XP Pro SP2 I got the following message: ==== "When I boot up my PC get an error message 'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt Windows\AppPatch\drvmain.sdb You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows set up using original set up CD-ROM. Select r on the first screen to start repair." ==== If I shutdown and restart the computer it often starts but startup takes a long time. Before the slow startup or the failure-with-message there is a large band across the bottom of the screen that looks kind of like barcode and like a progress bar. I recently tried to install SP3 and got an access denied err…

'Search Companion' Problem
by Guest Jim- 4 replies
Have somewhat of a problem and need help. After a recent update, I no longer have dialog when I select 'Search' from the 'Start' menu (Start > Search ). The animated character appears, but there is no dialog (options for searches or to change preferences). 'Google is my friend' but have not found anything to tell me how to get the dialog back. Depressing F3 closes or opens the dialog window, but NO dialog appears along with the animated character. How can I get this functionality back? Responses are greatly appreciated. -- Jim "What we know is minuscule to what we don't know..."

system restore
by Guest SQL Programmer- 3 replies
Hello: An end user reported something regarding the XP System Restore feature that I am surprised at. He had installed a program on his laptop. Beforehand, he created a Restore Point to use just in case the program created issues. It did. It was "messing up" some other programs of his, so he decided to use that Restore Point in order to get himself back to square one. He claims that, when he restored, it restored his laptop to the previous day rather than simply to the previous point from before installing the program. That does not sound right. I have used System Restore in the past to restore my laptop to a point from just before I installed…

Laptops and Vista
by Guest ken- 8 replies

I need to purchase a new laptop computer for my college-age daughter. It appears that the new ones (HP, Sony, Dell [i know that there is a higher end in Dell that uses Vista Business] all come with various flavors of Vista. My experience is with Win2K and Win XP Pro, which I have come to know well enough to do most of the support (with help from people here). I have heard problems about Vista being a memory hog and having "problems" but I am unclear about what those problems might be. In addition, I am not sure if these newer computers would run XP Pro (which I would prefer). If someone would venture their opinion about potential problems using …

Automatic Hibernation

Ok, I have gone through this before and it is time to rehash it. I hibernate my laptop every night using Shutter.exe. http://www.den4b.com/screenshots.php?project=Shutter and it works fine. By that I mean, not only does it hibernate my laptop at the scheduled time but it also allows my scheduled wake-up tasks to run, which Rundll.exe,powrprof.dll SetSuspendState did not do. It has in its parameters one that if true will DisableWakeEvent. So ,what I need is one of you experts here to tell me exactly what to type in my Scheduled Tasks Run box when setting up the task. If you would look at this page :http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa373201.aspx an…

Opening a file with two different applications.
by Guest matthewtec- 1 reply

I know that I can click on a .txt file and have it open with Notepad. And to open it with something such as WordPad or JEdit, I can right click on it and either use 'Open With' or 'Send To' [after putting the respective shortcut in the 'Send To' folder. But, I was wondering if there is a way to accomplish this by doing something along the lines of selecting a key and left clicking the application [such as holding down 'Control' and double clicking the application to have an alternate application open the file], or something along those lines? If there's anything anyone could help me with, it would be appreciated. Thank you. Matt -- remove t…

SP3 file indexing ARG!!
by Guest Jo- 8 replies

This is driving me nuts! I don't know if it's just SP3 in general or if it's this useless file indexing thing or what, but my computer runs MUCH slower, it sometimes hangs when a program is trying to read a directory, and often the thumbnails it shows are only a fraction of the regular thumbnail size and I have to click refresh to get the fill size. This is supposed to be an improvement how??? When I looked in Windows Help to see if I could shut it off, it tells me there should be a "Fast Find" or something in the control panel. Not! I did find "Indexing Options" but it only gives me options, not the ability to shut that feature down. I tried to unclick…

My computer died, and my son gave me his desktop that he doesn't use anymore since he got a laptop. How do I get rid of the Documents and Settings that say Brian (his name) and establish files for me? Same with Brian's Documents. How do I eliminate his name and files from everywhere I see it in one fell swoop and establish me as the owner of the computer? It is running XP -- David Schwartz Commack, NY

Personal nfo tracking files

Recently I was visiting what I thought was a respectable web site and suddenly I started getting pop up IM-type messages of a sexual nature. They were in the form of contact invitations and all of them said they were from my zip code. If I visit an electronics vendor's site, it already knows my zip for computing the best price available on an item. After a visit to a cooking blog, I immediately received an invitation via E-mail from the name I recognized as that of the blog's author suggesting I visit their MySpace page. I don't use any app whose purpose is to store personal information for easy retrieval in an effort to avoid the very situations I am now expe…

iMac 4 Gb RAM Windows XP Pro SP3 running under Parallels I have a FAT32 external HD on the virtual side of an iMAC This drive is accessible from both the Mac and Windows side. All was well until two days ago when one single folder failed to open, producing an error message: [path] is not accessible. The handle is invalid. The folder continued to open without hesitation on the Mac side. I copied the folder to an off-drive location, deleted the original and recopied the folder back to its original location. Same problem. Then, from the Windows side, I renamed the folder by putting a space between each letter of the folder's name. The problem was resolved and…
