Deleted Folder Keeps Reappearing
by Guest magmike- 7 replies

I have a folder on my desktop that just had two pictures in it, that once no longer needed, I deleted. However, whenever I restart, the folder with pictures inside reappears! I've moved them to other folders, and again - it reappears after a restart. I even deleted the folder with a supposed 'forever eraser' program that supposedly overwrites the data a thousand billion times - but, yes, you guessed it - it still reappears after a restart. Anybody know the cure for this and could explain why this is happening? Thanks in advance! magmike

We have an old laptop that is currently running XP Pro (VERY slowly), that we we intend to take out of service. We intend to use the OS in another much newer laptop that can easily handle the operating system. We would like to avoid activation problems of course, and need to know how do we transfer XP licence from the old laptop to the new laptop. Appreciate any advise that will make this go smoothly. Thanks RJN

My defragger will never defrag my Outlook .pst files completely...but there is this new error (something I have never seen) called VProSvc.exe. Any help is certainly appreciated. I usually do not use Norton products but heard some good things about this one....hmmm!!! I always wondered how I could dfefrag my Outlook ..pst files... but would be happy just to defrag it! The file (VProSvc.exe.2008 1002-041759-00. hdmpseems to be located in C:\WINDOWS\PCHeal…

Explorer doesn't explore sometimes
by Guest Alpha- 4 replies

Of late, Windows Explorer often takes ages to open up on a Windows XP Pro SP2 notebook. And the Dr Watson bugger comes up and the shell restarts. All updates installed, works perfectly otherwise. Also, one gets the ~another process is accessing the file~ error very often when deleting files. Unlocker takes care of that pretty effectively though. Don't now if related - Windows also takes ages to shut down when the explorer issue occurs - no end-process messages though.. No other error messages. Clear page-file at shut-down is disabled. CHKDSK /F and SFC /scannow run without effect. We would appreciate any insights into what to look for. Regards and TIA. Alpha …

When I use the bluetooth headset, I find that my system volume has no effect on the output volume. The output volume seems to be totally under the control of the application, eg Windows Media Player, Winamp. Is there any way I can configure the PC so that I can still use my system volume with bluetooth headset ? Thanks in advanced.

Microsoft extends XP downgrade rights date by six months 1 2
by Guest the granter of sina- 40 replies

MS knows Vista is crap lol http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1619 Microsoft is sending some very confusing signals about Windows Vista - the latest of which it issued via a statement on October 3. The Register reported on October 2 that Microsoft was going to extend again the date until which PC makers would be allowed to continue to offer Windows users "downgrade rights," enabling them to switch from Vista to XP on new machines. The Reg said Microsoft had moved the downgrade cut-off date from January 31, 2009 to July 31, 2009. I asked Microsoft about the Reg's report and got this statement, via a company spokesperson: "As more customers …

Minimizing Web Pages
by Guest Barry Karas- 3 replies
11/Oct/2008 12:01 I am running Windows XP Home with SP3. When I minimize a web page, the notification icon goes to the bottom of my desktop (between the start button and the clock). This web page SHOULD NOT change. However, when I start a new web page (for example, that is on my desktop, or is in an e-mail message) the minimized web page changes to the web page I just started. I want the prior web page to remain. This worked the way I want until about three weeks ago. Then the MINIMIZED web pages changed automatically when a new web page was started. How would I make minimized web pages stay the same until I terminate them? TIA Sincerely, Bar…

Cannot upload files
by Guest bitwise- 2 replies

After recklessly using a registry cleaner, I can no longer upload files (DSL speed test upload speed = 0). Event viewer shows "upload manager failed to start ID: 7000). Account specified wrong. It looks like my computer name has been removed from some service that is trying to start, but I haven't figured out how to find the name of it. I did a system restore from a safe date, but no joy. Local system network DDE disabled network DDE DSDM disabled remote access auto connection manager disabled (I think this is due to remote access being disabled for security). I do have a drive image from a previous backup s…

Hi, I'm looking for any tools/softare or a process where in replacing an exising hard drive on a computer, that has a hidden restore partition like IBM, Lenovo, some HP's, that I can clone both the boot partition and the hidden restore partition over to a new larger hard drive, that would then replace the existing internal drive. Seagate tells me their SeaTools will not do this. Acronis tech support has not responded. Thanks in advacne - Dodge

WD external drive not playing well
by Guest Joe Starin- 2 replies
Dell laptop, Windows XP Home, one play/burn DVD drive. Have a Western Digital My Book Essential USB 2.0 320GB external drive. Whenever I connect this external drive then power up, I get a black screen and nothing else -- as soon as I disconnect the drive, Windows boots immediately. When I connect the drive AFTER the laptop is running, all processes seem to slow down or stop. Every simple click takes 2 to 3 minutes or the request won't complete at all. Can barely run Belarc Advisor. Can barely view "My Computer." Can barely even switch Web pages. Not a crash but I get a very long hourglass no matter what I do and/or this error message: "The specified…

explorer freezes for ~3 seconds after closing file
by Guest Eric T.- 1 reply
Intermittently (maybe half the time), when I close a file I have opened from the explorer, it freezes for about 3 seconds before letting me do anything again. I doesn't seem to happen with .txt files, but it does happen with ..doc files (where the recovery exactly coincides with the backup file that Word created being deleted), and with .jpg files (which is why I don't suspect something with Word in particular), and maybe others. During this delay, keystrokes I make are lost (e.g. if I hit down arrow to move to the next file, it does not do so when it recovers). It seems that only explorer is frozen. I can switch to another application or bring up the …

Why do all my local workgroup shares show up as "The Internet" in Network Places on my XP machines? UPnP devices show up as "Local Network". Even a share off the local host shows up as "The Internet". How does Network Places decide "The Internet" vs. "Local Network"?
