Windows 2000 Client Errors within Windows 2003 SBS Domain
by Guest Chris- 2 replies

Two of our machines cannot access the network resources, nothing was ever said to me and I don't usually check these two computer as they actually control our Atmosphere Environment and hardly get used. The backup of the data on these machiens gets pulled from the SBS2003 server itself - using copy commands. I have removed Symantec AV and PC Anywhere and am in the process of doing all Windows updates. The machines do have SP4 installed. The following messages are recorded in Event Log Event Type: Warning Event Source: MRxSmb Event Category: None Event ID: 3034 Date: 9/25/2008 Time: 10:17:06 AM User: N/A Computer: LV09 Description: The red…

Reinstalling Windows XP Pro after upgrades
by Guest Ed Wood- 6 replies
I have a June 2006 Windows XP Pro (WXPP) with SP2 Version 2002 SP3 build 2600 installed on my system. Somehow I picked up some viruses, which took me about 2 weeks to remove using AVG Internet Security V8, Spybot SD ver. 1.6.0, Malwarebytes v. 1.28, and RemoveIt Pro Enterprise v.4. I am not sure that they are totally removed yet, but I am trusting my antivirus/spyware/malware programs to catch them on future scans. There are still some corrupted WXPP files that need to be replaced. When I insert my WXPP disk in my drive, I get the following message: "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the C…

Regarding the event viewer application log.
by Guest talgam- 2 replies

I have received a red X on the left hand pane of the Application log in the event viewer. It won't display the application log on the right. I am not allowed to do a destructive restore because extra programs that were installed, we installed by a third party and he doesn't have contact with them. He does not have a Windows CD because it has the recovery sector on the hard drive. Is there any way that this problem can be fixed. I have not come across this problem before and I can use all the help I can get on this problem.

reinstalling Xp home (CD lost)
by Guest Miles- 10 replies
I have lost my CD, but still have the product key from the CD. I need to reinstall Xp. Can I just borrow someone else's CD to reinstall Xp and then enter the product key for the CD that I purchased several years ago (rather than the product code on the borrowed CD)? If that is not possible, can Microsoft help me or do I need to bite the bullet and purchase another upgrade Xp CD?

Hi, I 'm running windows XP SP2 on thinkcentre M55 with Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 @2.33GHZ. I'm trying to tune the memory on windows xp sp2 so I can have 4 GB of RAM. I can see the 4GB of RAM in the Bios, but windows can't see it because it's 32 bit. I found articles with Microsoft so you can tune the memory. I followed the documentation and modified the bootini. I didn't have much luck I can only see 3GB in window mean while 4GB in the BIOS. This is the bootini "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /PAE /3GB /Userva=2900 /NoExecute=OptOut". Any Idea, note the machine supports DEP.

Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft Windows "To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Name: Remote Desktop Connection Publisher: Microsoft Corporation." These are the updates that were done recently- KB updates - 952287, 952954, 938464, 950762, 951698, 951376-v2, 950974, 951376, 951066 and 946648 which after the updates this message occurred. If the message is not closed, RDP can be used normally. I have gone into the Advanced tab under Data Execution to select the option to have DEP not be used on RDP - rebooted the laptop and still have the issue. What is the next step to correct this issue?

Group Membership Caching - Solution for VPN available?
by Guest Herbert Storpe- 0 replies
1.) Remote User connected via VPN 2.) Run gpresult on client and check user group membership 3.) Add User on your AD controller to a new group 4.) Run gpupdate /force on the remote machine 5.) Run gpresult again As you can see Group Membership will no be updated. Membership refresh only happens during logon to the machine (not possible here, VPN User is using a software certificate for auth which is only available to the user after logon). QUESTIONS: 1.) Is there a solution available to trigger the client to update Group Membership Caching? 2.) Is this a known issue and solved with Vista? Thanks a lot, Herbert

Hello all, I had the windows/system32/config problem following a BSOD so I followed KB307545, I go a bit further because now i have the XP logo at boot with the sliding bar at the bottom but after 10-12 seconds the boot stops and i get an error message with a BSOD that says STOP 0x0000007B (0xBACCB524,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000) My XP CD xon't let me access the repair console, when I finish the boot sequence on the CD I can only select to install in C and not repair using the R key. Registry Question: Broken Open Command
by Guest Gruff the Elder- 8 replies
I scanned my XP Pro sp3 system with MalwareBytes AntiMalware and got the following hit: "Broken.OpenCommand". The detail indicated a problem with the registry entry at HKClasses_Root\scrfile\shell\open\command\ Under the column heading "Other" MB further indicated: Bad ("%1" %*) Good ("%1" /S) When I used regedit to look at this key, the value (REG_SZ) is indeed "%1" %* So I infer that MB is saying that the value of this key should be changed to "1%" /S What does this key do; why is the first value bad; and should I change it to the second value?

(long) HD errors hosed parts of computer - what to do?
by Guest foobar5@home.com- 3 replies

My daughter has a Lenovo laptop running XP Home, SP2. I get on it periodically for maintenance (my account on that computer is admin; hers is not). Earlier this week, I had the yellow shield alerting me that SP3 was downloaded and ready for installation. The installation proceeded smoothly and uneventfully until about 2/3 of the way through, when it had a problem copying a file. Stupidly, I said to proceed without copying that file, but then the next file copy had a problem too, so I aborted the SP3 install. The installation looked like it smoothly "rolled back" to SP2 and the computer restarted. But then I had no internet access, even though the WLAN …

Set Program Access & Computer Defaults?
by Guest Charliec- 15 replies

I use an e-mail client called Forte Agent for my email. I have it set as the default e-mail client in IE7. When I go to "Set Program Access & Computer Defaults", the Option under "Choose a default email program" is set to "Use my current e-mail program". Forte Agent is listed as one of the options, but I check it and click OK. Go back to the control panel and Forte Agent is unchecked and the default is back to "use my current email program". What am I doing wrong in getting Forte Agent as my default email program? Thanks Charliec ****************************************************** Charliec

by Guest Ramesh- 7 replies

HI, In the task manager, there is a system process utilising 99% of CPU at all times. I have noticed this after I updated to SP3, not sure if that was the starting point. Is there any way to sort this out? The system has come to a grinding speed. At times the screen just goes blank while working and takes 5-10 seconds to get back (and continues as normal) Thanks for any inputs. Ramesh

Microphone input not working
by Guest maghy17- 5 replies

I'm so frustrated right now, I own a laptop and yesterday I bough a headset with microphone included since the fan on my laptop makes a lot of noise and the people I talk to are bothered by the loud fan, I thought this was going to solve the problem, but yesterday when I plugged the headset the other person told me he can still hear the fan, how can I block the sounds coming from inside the laptop and just leave the external microphone working? I have tried everything but nothing worked, I have no idea why my computer won't give me an option to pick between external microphone or internal, please help!!

Trojan Vundo removal guide?
by Guest anthony- 5 replies

I posted a message re an 'auto update turned off' warning from Microsoft which persists .... and was told it was possibly a Trojan Vundo infection. I'm going to follow the tips provided for removal -- but if all else fails, will my problem be solved by a clean wipe of my hard-drive? I do have all XP discs, and all software applications safely filed away for re-use.

XP extremely slow boot up
by Guest RDT- 12 replies

I have booted up in safe mode and that seems fine and takes a normal amount of time to get up and running but when I try to boot up through the normal login screen it takes forever as in grass grows faster. Once it gets to the screen where the users are listed, it virutally freezes. The color bar doesn't even move. You can here the HDD making a pattern of noises (dttt...dt, dt, dt, dt). It has done this for awhile and would evetually boot but now it takes 2 or 3 minutes just to get to the password window and it goes to sleep before it ever boots. It's a Compaq laptop that orignally had ME on it. It has a 20G hard drive and 256M of ram. It's been great for…
