Microsoft Keyboard USB problem
by Guest HLAMUTHNOSPAM@EARTHLINK.NET- 5 replies

I have two MS keyboards...the natural ergonomic variety...the old one, an Elite, works in USB and PS/2 modes but the newer Multimedia v. 1.0a will only work in the Ps/2 mode. I have the legacy mode set in the bios. The USB connection is via an adaptor from the PS/2 connector. Issue for me is to switch to a USB KVM and the Elite works but I prefer the Multimedia board. So, I am stumped. Any ideas on next steps? Thanx for any help. Henry

U3 Readyboost flash drives problem
by Guest Andrew- 2 replies

2 SanDisk Cruzer Micro 8GB U3 Readyboost flash drives are on their way to me from Amazon, which at £9.99 each post paid are the cheapest branded one I’ve seen to-date. I’ve found u3 to be an expensive gimmick and would normally use a little app called u3 uninstall which returns the flash to its original non-u3 state. However, not yet familiar with Vista Readyboost, has anyone any idea if using the u3 uninstall will affect the Readyboost aspect of these drives? I'm still using XP home until support runs out. - Thanks - Andy PS - Have also posed this question to Windows Vista General Discussion.

Can't get rid of desktop icons

Hi using win xp My friend was using "Magix Photos on CD & DVD" to create commentaries on a slide show and each commentary has ended up on his desktop. Now he can't get rid of these icons He did go into the registry through H- key_Local_Machine and H-Key_Current_User to his desk top icons, deleted the icon streams and altered the binary codes but they seem to regenerate themselves. His desktop is a mess of icons. Would anyone know how to fix this please? -- Martin

Maintaining Icon Associations
by Guest Sam- 6 replies

I have written an x86 Assembly language game which I now would like to distribute online. I have made a custom icon for the game that I associate with a shortcut to the game. I wish to distribute the game by zipping all of its files in a folder and then providing the zip as a download. My problem is that upon unzipping the folder on a new computer, the shortcut no longer remains associated with the icon, even though the .ico file is in the same directory. It is strange that the shortcuts themselves are able to reestablish a correct path to their executables, but they are not able to reestablish a correct path to their icons. My game originally began a…

why does one pc run slower than the other?
by Guest Jon Dobson- 3 replies

I have 3 nearly identical Dell P4 pc's running nearly identical XP operating systems and software, yet one pc runs much more slowly than the others. For example, a program I recently wanted to install on all three units installed somewhat slowly but completely on the 2 faster units, but clogged the slower unit so much and took so long that I finally abandoned installation. My question is why does this one pc runs more slowly than the others? RAM is idential on each unit. The only thing different about the pc's are the hard drives- the two faster units have 160 GB drives about 60- 70% data filled and the slower one has a 20 GB drive about 80% full. I c…

My icon says that my auto updates have been disabled. When I go to change it the security center has the auto updates checked that they are in fact enabled. I go to the security website and it checks to see if I'm running the proper stuff and then I get a message saying... error 0x8DD0018, The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is not running:Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install high-priority updates for your computer) Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted) Event Log (keeps a record of updat…

Hoping someone out there can help me. My system started hanging up, taking forever to open anything, we started getting error messages for everything and I do not know of anything recently added to cause this issue other than updating our Intel Bios for overheating issues. Very simple home users love E-Bay and working on my excel projects. I received this Debug Error! When ever we hit print (on or off line) we get this message and the spooling goes to 99% but never prints? Vista vs XP Machine Purchase
by Guest Watty- 11 replies

I'm told that some mfgers will sell quad core PCs with Vista, but provide a way to replace it with XP (Pro, I hope). If so, which mfgers provide machines that are able to get back to XP? In general, I've heard that most (maybe) new PCs with Vista probably cannot be reset to XP--possible hardware-driver conflicts. Further, MS is putting together a new OS that will supersede Vista in a few years. Comments?

The new version of MusicMatch doesn't allow for loading music from LP records. Does anyone know of, or have software that will accomplish this? -- JLAB
