Hi i have a Dell Dimension 9150 desktop. I was having problems with slow startup of Windows Xp Media Centre and IE7 keeping locking up. So Dell recommended i restore my PC to factory Default by Ctrl and F8. I carried out the above, and then the PC was back to the same as the first day i received the PC. I connected to the internet and carried out all the Windows XP and driver updates. I was still having problems with IE7 locking up so therefore installed IE8 Beta. IE8 sometimes still stops responding and now i am also having problems installing software. I have tried installing MSN Messenger etc and other software and it starts downloading, but howeve…

Viewing two windows at once.

Hello Folks I need to copy a lot of information from PDF files and put them in a word document. However, when I start typing, the PDF window goes behind the open Word file window and I have to manually switch between the two every couple of words or so. Is it possible not to lose the view of PDF window. It will be unfeasible to print each PDF file as there is a *lot* of them to do and only need about 30 or so words from each page. It is also unfeasible to have two small windows open as there will have to be lots of scrolling up, down, left and right. It a nutshell, what I want is to do is to be able to type on a full screen Word document, with a 3/4 si…

Can renew IP address
by Guest wli2k2- 3 replies

I have a laptop with Windows XP Home with SP3. I connect the laptop directly to the DSL router and it is set to get IP automatically. However, the last few days I noticed that it does not generate IP address. I know the DSL connection is OK since I tried another laptop. I got another PCMCIA NIC and yet it also cannot get an IP address. I did get a reply by ping 127.0.0.1. Any ideas what's wrong?

I have 2 new hds they are not twins not puchaced at the same time, one is a white label. I cannot get xp32 or 64 to see this drive. the install disk sees it. vista sees it. linux sees it, and partition manager (dos) sees it. xp says there is something on the sata channel but that it has no id, therefore has no idea what it is so i can't use it. The only difference in the hd id's that i can see is the white label has an ascii charector at the end of its id. is this odd or what?

Is there an utility which allows you to run all you command shells from a single windows and switch between them, rather than having so many of them cluttering the desktop. There is something like that for Putty. Is there one for DOS?

Windows Boots - nothing shows
by Guest Jeff Mort- 7 replies

Interesting ... Windows XP Pro boots up, you can log in with no problems, however, nothing shows up on the screen, no icons, no bar on the bottom, nothing. If you CTRL-ALT-DEL and open task manager you can run programs all day long. Mouse and keyboard work fine. I'm at a loss, I've used System Mechanic to see if there were any problems that could be solved, and I've turned off all startup items. Any help would be great.

Acronis/DiskWizard--Reboot to Copy?
by Guest Watty- 3 replies
I'm began using the seagate version of acronis. I copied a bootable disk image from a 80G drive to a partition on a Seagate 500G external drive, L-drive, 100G. The size of the files on the 80G drive were about 60G. I then attempted to copy the image to a 320G WD drive. When I was about to start the copy, I got a message with a large exclamation point that said the machine would be rebooted when I proceeded. That seemed a bit odd. It seemed the implication was that it would be the very next thing to happen. Why would it need to boot to make a copy? I can see how this might be the case once the copy had been made.

Problem with Multi-user
by Guest jktan99- 2 replies

I have 3 accounts on my PC, one admin, two limited (for my kids), running on Windows XP SP3. Now, when we boot up the PC, if my son (limited account) or I (admin account) logs in first, there is no problem. However, if my daughter (limited account) logs in, the PC got stuck. On the desktop, some icons are okay, some aren't (they look like document shape not icons) and the PC is frozen. She said that when this happens, she has to restart (i.e. pressing reset button because it is frozen) a few times until it finally boots up okay (and the desktop is fine). I checked her settings (startup applications, display property etc) and I couldn't find anything…

I was trying to set resolution in safe mode. First, I ran msconfig then ticked boot to safemode and then I restart. But I cannot login cause I was only able to login thru a different domain or netmork (e.g. doamin\username). Is there any possible way to boot into normal mode again? I tried pressing F8, and then choose Normal Mode etc, but still it went thru safe mode! So sad, I feel Im in Danger Mode. Please help! I cannot login and my computer is completely useless now... Many thanks in advance! -- ===================================

Running Pentium based HP about 2 years old, don't have explicit details. He is in another city and doesn't have access to a Windows disk. Bill

Unable to stop USB hard drive
by Guest simonc- 6 replies

I raised this before but unfortunately didn't get any replies which helped solve the problem. I now have some more information. The problem is that every time I try to remove a USB portable hard drive and use the Safely Remove Hardware icon I get a message that the device Generic Volume cannot be stopped. This although I have no applications open. I've now discovered that if I have the USB device already plugged in when I boot the computer it gets locked as described above. However, if I plug in the drive after booting up and logging on then I can eject it at will with no problems. What might be the application which would be locking the disk drive onl…
