Problem with SP3 and Diskeeper
by Guest Jeff Barnett- 11 replies
I just installed SP3 on an XP Pro SP2 machine then rebooted (twice). All went well except that Diskeeper 9 gives an error message about a snap-in problem when I try to run an analysis. I get an option to continue (as well as inform Microsoft, etc.) and continuing works in the sense that I can do the analysis and defrag my disks. Has anyone else seen this problem? Diskeeper Corporation has no updates posted on their site and I don't know if this is their or Microsoft's problem. Anyone have a clue as to what is going on? TIA -- Jeff Barnett

Folder name change messes up my nano
by Guest Hizonor- 2 replies
I am running XP. I have tried to install iTunes on my computer so I can use a nano. However, I tunes cannot find the "My Music" folder because windows has changed the name to "Donovan's Music." I cannot change the folder name back to "My Music," since it is a special folder. To get around this, I followed iTunes instructions and created a new user on my computer, named it "Musicman," and sure enough there was a "My Music" folder under that user that allowed me to sync to the nano. However, the next time I accessed iTunes, it would not open because the "My Music" folder had been renamed "Musicman's Music," and could not be changed back. I bought a rem…

svchost.exe & store.xml - Laptop Hard Drive
by Guest Dave Onex- 14 replies
Hi Folks; I'm troubleshooting a problem with my laptop's hard drive not going to sleep after 5 minutes. To that end I broke out Process Monitor to take a look at what is accessing the hard drive. What I'm finding is repeated attempts to CreateFile; C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Provisioning\store.xml that results in a NAME NOT FOUND error or NAME COLLISION. I actually created a store.xml file in that directory thinking that would make it go away - it hasn't. Does anyone know why svchost.exe is continually trying to create a file called store.xml and how can I stop it? Thanks! Dave

Have mis-edited registry keyboard value
by Guest rseaton- 4 replies
Hi, I believe I've deleted the 'upperlimit' value in the registry for my keyboard (I was trying to do so for my CD drive, following a knowledge base article). Now, when my computer boots up, I can't log on as the keyboard won't work. It still functions in the BIOS. I'm using XP, SP3 on a Dell Dimension 3000. I have a (slightly old) back up of the registry on my hard drive, so I can copy and paste the correct value over if only I could log on. It's a bit Catch-22. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I understand that this is a part of Office program to do with voice recognition. I have Office 2003 installed on XP Pro SP3 I don't use voice recognition. How can I stop this occurring. Thanks for any assistance.

XP Transfer My Files & Settings Wizard Q.
by Guest RJK- 2 replies
I've just plugged a USB hd into a XP Home ed. system box, ( detected as drive E:\ ), and after choosing, in as many of the wizards' "Next / radio button" screens, I've selected that this is the "old" computer that I want to transfer files and settings from," and pointed the wizard to output to a folder called E:\briansfsw\ ,...and the wizard starts off, and then spends and inordinate amount of time examining a massive directory structure that I have on that external USB hd !!! ...should it be doing that ? i.e. I don't want gigabytes of stuff from my ext. hd, added to the "Transfer My Files & Settings Wizard," archive, from the source machine, …

I'm running XP Home Edition, SP3 on a home network. When windows explorer is open and another PC on the network is in use, and I navigate away from and then back to windows explorer, it hangs for several seconds. After this pause, the folders for My Documents and Network are displayed and I can then access the other folders. Any suggestions on how to avoid this problem?

Dialog box font size
by Guest j10z- 8 replies
On one (out of six) computer in our office we have a weird problem. Many dialog boxes (especially when installing software) display font sizes so big they extend "outside" the box. This usually includes check boxes, so no user input is possible. Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this, and does anyone know if anything can be done about it?

Hi, I have a computer A with internet connection (ADSL connection through USB modem) and computer B with no internet connection. Both computers have Win XP. First I have changed the settings of my internet connection so that it is shared. Then I connected computer A to the internet using the (shared) internet connection. Then I have set up a wireless ad hoc network on computer A as described in http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/adhoc.mspx Next I connected computer A to the wireless network (is not mentioned in the article but I don't get it to work if I don't). Next I looked at the available wirless networks on computer B and found the …

Simple Font Installation?
by Guest Jay- 3 replies
Greetings! I am trying to copy some fonts from one XP machine to another. These are TrueType fonts. Is it possible to just copy/paste them from the Fonts folder of one machine into the same folder on the other? I've done it successfully that way on one machine, but on another I get the message like Windows is using the font and it cannot be replaced. If I'm not running any apps, and the font hasn't been installed yet, then how can Windows be using it? Thanx,

System restore problem
by Guest Theslaz- 7 replies

Trying to remove my old restore points. Reason being; I had a virus; cleaned that up; however; my virus program still shows a virus in my various system restore files. I have tried; several times; turning of system restore and then rebooting. However; when I go back into the settings; it shows that system restore is still turned on and monitoring. I would have thought that it would stay turned of. I did another virus scan and it appears that the only system restore files showing a virus are on the "C" drive. My other 4 drives don't show anything; whereas before turning of system restore they would show a virus. So it appears that some files where rem…
