missing HAL.DLL - but that's not it - more issues pls help!
by Guest daviddschool- 24 replies

I have done the research to try and fix the missing hal.dll (google and have seen a lot of fixes). Here is the issue : when I boot, it stops before XP comes up and gives me the error that the hal.dll is corrupt or missing, please reboot. I have tried to reboot several times. 1) I put the hard drive on another computer, but it wouldn't read it properly (using an USB 2.0 external bay) 2) I have tried the windows recovery CD (booted with the XP CD) and did the bootcfg /rebuild but I get an error and it won't let me - and tells me I must do a chkdsk. So I am trying that, but it is taking forever (on an 80 gig drive). I am hoping this fixes the issue ,but I c…

download error
by Guest Bill- 1 reply

I am unable to download a specific file, http://www.logmein.com/logmein.msi. This is the install file for the LogMeIn remote control software. I am using IE7 and it gives me an error "data area passed to a system call is too small." it happens as soon as the download begins, so I never get the file. I know enough about programming to know what this means -its a win32 buffer error, but I dont know what to do about it. I am on xp pro sp2, just got the latest IE7, defragged harddrive. I am able to download much larger files from all kinds of web sites with no problems at all. Vendor's tech support staff has no idea what the problem is but seems convinced it is w…

Funny menu
by Guest Peter in New Zealand- 4 replies

I have a curious thing that happens from time to time with my start menu, and I cannot figure out what is causing it. Every so often, when I click on the Start button, the menu pops up, but is doubled. What I mean is, it's like it's there twice, one in the normal position, and an exact copy above it on the screen. Both appear equally "solid", and the shortcuts on both seem to work the same. I have checked the actual menus in Windows Explorer, and everything there is OK. If I reboot, or set the menu to "Classic" and then back to the XP style, it all comes right again. I've used XP for several years, and never seen anything like this. Everything works OK, th…

Fonts and icons too small in larger screen resolution
by Guest Paul- 6 replies
My wife has always preferred our desktop monitor's resolution to be set low, at 800 x 600. Getting her ready for a nice new 19-inch LCD (1440 x900), I decided to raise the old monitor's resolution (the highest it can support is something like 2000x1600). It put it at 1280x1024 and the icons and fonts on webpages look incredibly small. I went into the start menu properties and told it to use large icons; and the settings in the desktop properties--I change the font size to large. But as you can see, everything looks incredibly small. http://img242.imageshack.us/my.php?image=resolutionvz4.jpg This monitor is an old Sony Trinitron, on its last legs. I…

My eyesight is getting to be no match for site designers using ever smaller fonts. Is there some procedure to force larger fonts? Also, in the acessability area, I see mention of a "style" sheet that sounds hopeful, but I can not find any detailed help for creating and using style sheets in IE-7 Help or tips appreciated. Thanks

Desktop not working - no icons, start button, etc.
by Guest jaredean- 14 replies

Friday before I left for the day programs just suddenly started erroring out and then i got a BSOD. I had to go home, so i just let it reboot itself and left for the day. Came in this morning and it looks like it was trying to do a scandisk over the weekend (which only takes a few minutes) and was stopped on part 2 of 3... so, i shut it down, started it up and let it go through it again (which it accomplished)...but, once it started up again I could login, but had no desktop icons, no start bar, nothing. I can do a CRTL + ALT + DEL to bring of the task manager, but that is it. I can also login using safe mode, but I can't see anything in there either. It…

Hello all, Winxp prof, SP3 I have found a very few post on this issue but ever since uninstalling IE 8 my machine has become a dog. Time Zone keeps changing...?
by Guest Kenneth- 14 replies
Howdy, I run XP SP3... Perhaps two years ago, the system started changing its time zone setting quite frequently (and apparently randomly.) If I recall correctly, there was a download from MS that corrected the problem. I ran it, and all has been well since. Until about a week ago... Now, I have the problem again: I am East Coast US, but at least every day, my system sets itself to Brasilia. I checked the MS site, and attempted to run the DL that I believe corrected the problem in the past, but I got an error telling me that I had a newer version of XP, and did not need the update. What can I do to correct this difficulty? Many thanks, -- …

missing dll files after installing sp3
by Guest DLandry- 4 replies
after the automatic install of sp3, I am receiving 2 error messages at startup: The first one reads: The procedure entry point apsSearchInterface could not be located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dll. The second one reads the same, substituting apsGetReady for apsSearchInterface. also IE webpabes do not change accurately. New web pages return a message that the web page is unavailable. If I refresh the link 1-3 times, it is responding correctly. I don't know what this means, nor how to fix it. I would greatly appreciate any help offered. Thank you.

by Guest cccdddrrr@hotmail.co.uk- 0 replies

XP SP3. Everything's been fine, up until today. If I use Windows Explorer, then try to look at My Computer, it freezes up! I haven't done any updates recently, the only thing I was playing around with recently was an external HDD, which can be a bit troublesome at times. Thanks a lot for any thoughts, best regards, Robert.

by Guest Bryan- 0 replies

Hello: I have a Windows 2003 Server Environment. I have 40 Windows XP computers on my environment. I push all the Windows updates from my server to all the workstations using WSUS. I have set it so after it installs the updates it will reboot automatically. One computer in particular, after it rebooted and user logs in he doesn't get his own profile, he gets a brand new profile. He has to reboot the computer one more time in order to get his old profile back. Is their a fix for this issue? Thanks in Advance
