Malware remnants
by Guest Brian in Vegas- 14 replies
I recently did battle with some fake virus alert malware, and after successfully eradicating them, I find that my C: drive and my ZIP (D:) drive are no longer listed in the My Computer Folder. How do I get them back in there. I currently have created shortcuts on my desktop so I can still access them but can't seem to figure out how to restore them to the My Computer folder. Also, I still have a "VIRUS ALERT!" message displayed next to my clock in the taskbar on my desktop and have no idea how to get rid of that either. THe malware popups ahve ceased and everything else is working just fine. HELP! Thanks in advance, Brian

NTFS - Changing Read-Only attribute on folder
by Guest 5tulips- 5 replies
Windows XP SP2 NTFS I have a folder that has a subfolder with a title composed of 15 words. I didn't create it, but know what's in the sub folder (not much, and don't need it). It looks like the title of a web page. Inside the subfolder is four very small files (4 are .js) (1 is jpg). My computer got a complaint yesterday while I was doing a backup with a message that said the title was too long, either change the name or delete it. I could do neither. The folder's properties are checked for 'read only.' I went to Help and Support and it gives instructions, which I already know, and in most cases it always worked. I'm on NTFS, The change procedur…

dead keys
by Guest Bob- 0 replies

I am sending WM_KEYDOWN messages from one window to another. This works OK in English. In e.g. French, with the target window using a French keyboard, I can use VkKeyScanEx to find out what key to send for most characters, like for 'ç', wParam is VK_9. But VkKeyScanEx is useless for characters that are entered using a dead key, like 'â' is the sequence wParam = VK_OEM_6 (a dead key) followed by wParam = VK_A. Is there some other function that will tell me how to convert a character into the proper dead key sequence for a given keyboard? Thanks, Bob

Antivirus Solutions

We're currently running SAV Corporate 10 on our 2003/XP network and really don't want to shell out the $1500 for new 50 new licenses. Symantec has become increasing more bloated with each new version to the point where, if I wanted to upgrade to Endpoint Protection 11, I'd need to upgrade my workstations, and that's not going to happen any time soon. I've been looking into some alternate solutions and wanted some opinions on NOD32. AVComparatives.org shows it has a high detection rate and there seems to be a lot of praise coming from IT admins in various forums. I've installed the trial and like it so far. Uses much less resources than SAV. Anyone h…

MSVCR70.dll missing
by Guest David Schwartz- 5 replies
I uninstalled a number of programs from an old computer for my wife to use and now a number of programs, notably, Outlook Express gives me the error message that it can't find the file MSVCR70.dll. I did some research on the file and I know that it belongs in the Windows System32 folder. I have another computer networked to this one that has the file where it belongs. Can I just copy the file from this computer into her computer's System 32 folder and solve the problem or will that create another problem, like a registry problem that will make me wish I never woke up this morning or do I have to go through some anal Windows procedure to get the file wher…

SteadyState and WDP
by Guest Ray- 9 replies

I work in an elementary school and we are attempting to use SteadyState with Disk Protection enabled to protect the computers from the kids in the computer lab and Library. We have redirected the Desktop and My Documents folders to a network drive - but we have several applications that don't play nicely and store their data on the computer's hard drive and don't offer the option of changing the data location. Does anyone have any suggestions for some method of getting around this problem? If we can't find a solution, I'm afraid we're going to have to abort the whole process. 2 applications specifically are Type 2 Learn 3 by Sunburst Technology and KidPix …

error!!
by Guest TARUN- 0 replies
Hi Recently my PC auto updated to SP3. Since then my DVD burner/Rom is not able to read blank DVDs/CDs (imation)!! The moment I place an empty DVD to burn some data, my PC restarts. DVD ROM is able to read any CD or DVD which already has data or movie in it. I am not sure that is the problem. Once (PC got re-booted) windows stated that my PC has recovered from serious error. After checking the report that was created, some BCP codes and some other codes were stated in the report. I googled the problem and bought Regcure to fix the error. Since then I have never rec'd this error whenever my PC reboots its self after I place a blank DVD/CD in my DVD RO…

Whenever I attempt to defrag C drive I get a message Defragmenter has detected that chkdsk /f is scheduled to run on the volume c. Please run chkdsk /f. I have attempted to run it in safe mode and that didn't work. I also attempted to do a system restore to a previous date. This also did not work. Any suggestions? -- paultooch

Tool bars not fitting on screen no matter how we adjust
by Guest Stacy- 3 replies

Wed 9/10, I saw the remove unused icon button come up and I clicked it to close or thought I did. It popped back up so I hit o.k. It was starting the wizard and I walked away. When I came back the screen was all distorted and out of range. My computer guy tried rolling back the video driver and adjusting settings from the monitor itself and settings with no luck. Low resolution is the only way it fits or by not enlarging the windows. Was there some download on 9/10 that would have affected it. My computer has 2003 drivers.

Very slow system start-up
by Guest Ganz Doof- 1 reply

My laptop (Win XP Pro) has become very slow to start up (more than 5 minutes before it is ready for business) and shutting down seems to take a long time too (about 3 minutes). What could I do to speed up the process? I have run CCleaner and also tried to uninstall unimportant programs - but it does not appear to help.

Can't load 'User'
by Guest Rob- 0 replies
I'm having trouble accessing any User after the Welcome screen. Windows XP SP2 boots okay to the user Welcome screen. When I pick a user it starts 'loading the settings', thee background comes up, no desktop icons and then suddenly it goes to 'saving the settings' and back to Welcome screen. I first tried rebooting and also Safe Mode (using Administrator) but same result. Figuring XP needs a driver or repair, when I try to use the OEM XP cd to boot it gives me "install XP, create or remove partition" When I touch any key it goes to blue screen. 2 messages - either 0X8E or 0X50. From there I've tried removing recent slave HDD and added SIMM but no change. …

Win XP SP3 fails to install and causes LAN to malfunction
by Guest M Shafaat- 5 replies

Hi, I run Win XP Pro SP2. After the automatic Win XP SP3 update failed, I tried in all the 3 ways instructed by Microsoft to redo it without success. I get the error message "Access is denied" after all tries . The same thing happened with my laptop. So it seems that this is a very common issue affecting many people. This has also caused my LAN no to function well. By restarting both the modem and router, I coul come out to the Internet, BUT still the other machines on the LAN cannot read the content in my machine and this is very important for me. Please help with both these issues. Regards M Shafaat

Mouse Freezes
by Guest User- 1 reply
XP Media Center, Version 2002, Service Pack 2 Dell Dimension E520 Quite often my USB mouse "sticks" for a moment, then recovers. Several times a day it freezes entirely and I have to unplug it then plug it back in to get it working again. (Some sort of driver conflict?) Surfing around on the web I see a lot of people recommending to uninstall/reinstall the mouse driver. But I'm a little reluctant to do this. If I uninstall the driver, won't the mouse stop working? How would I do anything after uninstalling the driver, and where would I find a new driver to install? Thanks.

program termination
by Guest LeoD- 0 replies
When a program or process is terminated, stopped or ended, it does not fully stop and is seen hanging around in the Windows Task Manager _ Precesses screen. It then has to be terminated by clicking on 'End process'. This happens with all applications. Some won't restart and gives the message 'application already running', even though it is not obvious on the screen. At the same time, on shutdown, a popup window appears advising svchost.exe - waiting to shut down. If the 'end now' is clsicked, the program ends but the computer takes >1 min to shut down. Are these problems related and is there a fix?

'Unlock' process does not show up in process list
by Guest John- 0 replies
Windows XP Media Center edition. In the task bar where active tasks (i.e. firefox) sit when they are running, there is a process/task called "unlock". The only options available are minimize and close. I took a tasklist /v from the command line and saved it to a text file and started looking at the active processes. I didn't see anything odd, the usual svchost etc. So I closed the "unlock" and took another tasklist -v To my surprise, there was no difference in size between the before an after images. I did some googling but couldn't find anything about "unlock" that looked specific enough to tell me what' going on. I'm not at that computer now, but…
