Problem After Upgrading
by Guest patetc- 1 reply

Even since reinstalling Windows XP and upgrading to SP3, I have an additional directory under "documents and Settings." I did have User Accounts and My Name. Now there is a third one, Administrator. I can't get into certain programs because I get a message telling me that the program has not been installed for this user. I am the only person using this computer and I am the administrator as well. I have made changes to allow me full access but I still don't have it. My favorites don't show up in Internet Explorer either. I need help to get this back to normal. System restore won't work--I already tried that. Pat

When I was using 98se, I had the default icon set to %1, and this would cause windows explorer, to show every file icon that was a picture file, to show the picture as the icon. How do I do this for XP Pro?

System Restore not seeing 'C' drive
by Guest Harold E. Schumacher, Jr.- 14 replies

In the System Restore tab of System Properities, the only "available drives" are my 'D' & 'E' drives. How do I get System Restore to monitor 'C' again? Don't know what happened but when I went to restore to a previous point, this is the dialog box that popped up: --------------------------- System Restore --------------------------- Changes made to drive(s) C:\ after this point cannot be reversed because the drive was either excluded from System Restore monitoring, or was turned off or removed. ---------------------------

Since I like to use the maximum page display I always use the autohide taskbar feature. Lately it has ceased to function properly. I can uncheck the autohide and apply, then recheck autohide and apply. It then works - once. After that it will not hide. Any suggestions on how to repair? TIA

- If I drag a folder from within the 'Shared Documents' folder on my PC - To the 'My Documents' folder on my PC - It remains visable in the 'Shared Doc's' folder - Till I navigate out and back. - The folder & contents seems to move OK but this doesn't seem like good behavior. Anyone else have this problem? Details: - I'm running XP Pro with the latest updates. - The PC is in a peer-to-peer with 2 other XP-Pro PC"s all on my desk top - All 3-PC's have their 'Shared Documents' folder set to share - No other PC has the folder open or any files in the folder open Thanks for any help.

I`m not sure where this should be posted but if not the right area perhaps someone can direct me where to post. I have a computer running XP Pro SP2. I`ve messed up quite a few of the keyboard keys monkeying around where I didn`t know what I was doing. At any rate I would like to just get back to the standard keyboard setup as it was origionally. Is there a way of doing this with my small amount of computer expertise (and your help)? TIA

VISTA, XP and Virtual Machines??
by Guest Al Dykes- 2 replies

What is the deal with running XP under VM legally. If I buy a copy of XP/Pro (EOM) as part of a complete system, can I run it under VM if I install Linux or Vista as a host OS? Would getting a legal XP/Pro Retail make any difference? -- Al Dykes News is something someone wants to suppress, everything else is advertising. - Lord Northcliffe, publisher of the Daily Mail

User name assigned to a new profile!
by Guest spamlet- 10 replies

Hi, This seems a similar problem to that noted by Bea below: as yet unanswered. (Is something going around?) Old Dell laptop, XPHome. On logging out of one profile and logging back on in my normal (administrator) one, 'userenv' in event log says a 'temporary' profile was substituted, and it would disappear on logging out. Not a bit of it! Now all I get after log on is the blue basic dell screen and a handful of standard desktop icons. Windows explorer shows that my folders and files are still there, but I cannot find any way to reassociate them with my user id, which now seems to be permanently referenced to this unwanted empty new one. Ther…

Boot problem - stuck at "Windows is starting up..."
by Guest 2Tall- 3 replies
I can get to Safe Mode, but once I choose any almost any selection, the computer then starts its boot sequence. When I get to the blue screen that says "Windows is starting up..." it just stops. I have restarted the machine about a dozen times. Twice I received the blue screen of death. One listed a problem with "beep.sys" - a problem with PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA and later another blue screen of death said my video driver failed to initialize. How do I get past the "Windows is starting up..."screen?

Howdy, I have been trying to create a batch file that will start with my system in Normal Mode, boot it into Safe Mode with Net, run two programs, and finally boot the system into Normal Mode once again. IE startup, false starts
by Guest craig311- 1 reply

When trying to access the internet, upon the initial try, my computer will not connect. It does not allow me to even click out as it is telling me it is not responding for a long time. Eventually I can get the message that windows is looking for a solution and I can put down the window. So, what I have to do to get on the internet is click on internet explorer a second time, even as the ohter window might be still searching and locked up. Then it comes right up, or I might have to try a third time. This is a Gateway computer GT5411E. Running windows XP. I have the compter virus protected by mcafee, with firewall and have run Registry Fix and spybot. Any s…
