Links not highligthed on return to page
by Guest Galen Somerville- 10 replies

Highlight is probably the wrong term I'm on a page with many links. I click on one and go to that page. I close that page and am back on the many links page. Nothing shows which link I had just selected. On Win98se, that link would stand out so I know which one I had just used. See http://home.surewest.net/galen/private/xppics/xppics.html Top pic shows I,m choosing 1 of 4 possible links. Middle pic shows I'm exiting that page. Bottom pic shows how Win98se tells me which one I last used. How to make WinXP do the same??? Galen

Internet Explorer, Freecell and calculator have disappeared
by Guest chizzy- 1 reply

Hi, hope you can help. I run XP SP3 and have just done a disc cleanup durich which I uninstalled Fax Service from Windows Components. Nothing else. On reboot Fax is still there but IE, Freecell and Calculator have disappeared. I have Calculator+ so that's no problem, but Freecell I want back and of course there's no life without IE even for a Firefox fan. All the other Windows games are still there along with the utilities. I've tried to re-install from the Windows Component menu but it wants my Windows installation discs, which I don't have because my Windows is pre-installed (and authenticated). What now? Thanks A.

I try to follow this instruction: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/startmfu.htm ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Resolution Right-click an empty area in the Start menu and select Properties. In the Start Menu tab, click Customize. Configuration options for the Programs list are on the General tab. Make sure that the "Number of programs on Start" is not set to 0. Try clearing the MFU list in the registry once, by pressing Clear List button. Disable the two policies namely NoInstrumentation and NoStartMenuMFUprogramsList. See article Q292504 for more information - Policy Settings for the Start Menu in Windows XP Microsoft Knowledgebase article Q292504 talks onl…

Can't See Programs in Start Menu
by Guest TomG- 3 replies
When I go to Start/All Programs, the list of all my programs is apparently to large to fit on my screen anymore. I expected some link to the right somewhere so I could see what is to the right of the screen, but there is nothing. As I install any new programs, I get the "New Program" message in tan when I click on start, but can't see to the right of the screen. Is there any way to see those hidden programs? Thanks. OT: How to launch RoboCopy after installation ?
by Guest Mel_3- 4 replies

I have 60 GB of data to move from one hard disk to another. Windows "copy" command aborts when file names are too long. Tracking down all long file names could take hours or days. I heard RoboCopy would do the copy. I downloaded it and rktools.exe but heard it was a command line program and not a windows gui application. My questions: 1 - If I double click on rktools.exe from Windows Explorer will it launch as a DOS application or will it install the application in c: \program files\ like other app's do? 2 - Once installed must I go to the command line... then navigate to the RoboCopy folder... then enter RoboCopy from the command line to launch …

physical drive letters stepping on mapped drives. Why?
by Guest Cameramonkey- 16 replies
Anyone know why after 16 years and (6 major versions), windows STILL cant tell that a drive has been mapped so that it doesnt re-use a drive letter for things like card readers? Have I been missing something all these years? I am getting tired of having to manually configure a card reader in drive manager to not use F: because a network share is already mapped to that letter. anyone? (or has this been fixed in Vista and I havent run across it yet?) And yes, I know that one fix is to map network drives from the bottom up, but thats not really a fix. Thats just avoiding the problem.

I have Windows XP Media Center Edition: I have to redo my question regarding my pc problem. I am such a newbie on this site, and a newbie pc user too. Here it goes: I uninstalled my webroot spyware. Then restarted laptop. When I logged on (administrator account) I got this message, "windows cannot load the users profile but has logged you on with the default profile". Detail "The system can not find the file specified." On the "default profile" that windows logged me on, I can not acces my administrator profile desktop, and all my documents, and also all the programs installed. I tried to use Restore system, it doesn't work. I used to be abl…

service pack 3 won't install
by Guest Luis Ortega- 6 replies
I keep trying to install service pack 3 and it fails with a message that a windows folder for installation doesn't have enough free disk space and I need to gain 4 mb more space. The drive it is on has about 300 GB free but I went ahead and deleted about a GB of stuff anyway and it still gives me the same silly message. Can anyone please advise me on what is going on and what I can do about it? Thanks for any advice.

HP ScanJet 8250 Incongruence
by Guest Bob Frolek- 0 replies
At location A I use SJ4850. At location B I use SJ8250. I use the same laptop (HP Pavilion dv9000) at both locations. This system has worked well in the past. I’m now at location B. Suppose I scan a fully printed A4 sheet. I see an A4 image, but the printed sheet has been “pushed” to the right and upwards, lopping part of it off, while leaving corresponding blank space at the left and the bottom. Have tried reinstalling the HP drivers to no effect. The defect seems to be at the HP end as four different software scanning programs give the same result. Is there a way of regaining congruence? Is SJ8250 dying?

Re: File and Transfer Wizard Woes
by Guest David- 0 replies

Re: File and Transfer Wizard Woes Brutal does not describe the XP File Transfer utility. I ran the utility on my XP machine to output all my settings to an external drive. I then installed a new laptop hard drive and re-installed the same version of XP with SP3. When I tried to run the utility I got the message that the Migration store was created with a previous version of files and settings. How am I supposed to go back and create the export with a different version of the utility. as an IT Software Developer I can't imagine how non IT people would feel about this brutally bad utility. This is beyond Frustrating. Fed up with non user friendly issues …
