I am having problem with windows xp sp3. I can't bring the system restore screen. It appears blank white. The problem started this way... I have WinFax Pro 10.04 on windows xp but fax sharing wasn't working therefore, Symantec suggested the solution where it asked to go to admin tools and click on component services and my computers, right click and click on properties, click on COM Security, Edit limits and add anonymous logon and check local and remote activation. I followed all the steps still it did not resolve the winfax sharing issue but got windows problem. When I rebooted the system, I noticed it takes long time to start and login. Further, I recei…

Windows XP Pro system has slowed to a crawl...
by Guest husky86- 18 replies

I've presently exhausted all ideas about tackling this ongoing situation, so I thought I would turn to this forum to see if anyone has any ideas. Here's the problem: In my wife's office at work she is using a Dell OptiPlex 8200 system (Pentium 4, 1 GB RAM, Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 3), 80 GB hard drive (60% full)). During the past couple of months, her system has experienced a TREMENDOUS slowdown. The best way to describe it is that it's like trying to move through "molasses in January".... it just takes forever to accomplish anything like loading applications, installing or uninstalling programs, completing tasks within applications, etc. …

Problems w Adobe Reader 9.0
by Guest mdpeters149- 4 replies

I just downloaded Reader 9.0 and it installed automatically. Now whenever I start/restart the computer, it goes to the folder labelled c://program files/adobe/acrobat.com and displays the contents of said folder. I looked in the startup folder and there is nothing indicating that this should happen. What gives? Should I uninstall/reinstall? Thanks

IS THIS A HOPELESS CASE FOR SERVICE PACK 2? PLEASE HELP
by Guest kim42- 9 replies

Hi, I'm back with a new problem. Hope you can help me with this one too. I have a Dell 4600 xp that had sevice pack 1 on it. I have tried to install service pack 2, 3 different times, with no luck. I finally decided to try it again and it seemed to be doing ok until it got hung up at the end where it was doing clean-up. I think it was in clean-up at least an hour. anyway it finally came up and said that the install failed. I rebooted my computer and it was there. It is also in my add-remove in the control panel. It was giving me problems, so I rebooted in safe mode to do a system restore. All that was there were service pack restore points, so I picked the …

I have copied the following from another forum - he describes perfectly what i have been experiencing for over 6 months now and it is finally driving me nuts... "I hope someone has a suggestion/solution to this irritating problem. Before posting this message I searched the web for similar issues and applied what I could from what was suggested (re-installing IE, disabling add-ons, ...) but to no avail. The problem occurs only in IE (not Firefox) and exhibits itself randomly (it seems): whenever I click in the address bar or sometimes on some links within the page I get this message in the status bar at the bottom of the page: "Contains commands for w…

Cannot get to certain websites
by Guest Gre0145- 10 replies

I'm probably overlooking something but I need help. I have a PC, which was full of Viruses and Malware, but is now clean. I can run a scan of several different virus engines and it detects nothing. So with that being said, why can I not get to certain websites? Windows Update is one, and if you try to go to safer-networking.org it takes you to a totally different site. When trying to get to Windows Update it shows IP 127.0.0.1 which is the loopback address. I checked my host file and it is clean. Where is IE picking up this 127.0.0.1 from?

Need help with SP 2 (or SP 3)
by Guest PerkyPenny- 6 replies

Hello all, I am in dire need of help and hopeful that I can get the assistance that I need. My hubby downloaded a virus on my computer one day last week. It was quite nasty and I had to do a system restore. I ended up having to do a Destructive System Restore to get everything right again. (The virus would not allow me to access any of my documents, music, etc. When I clicked on the Start button, it wouldn't even bring up my control panel or anything) I did the destructive restore and everything has been working fine. My computer automatically downloaded all the updates and when it installs the SP 3 (or even SP2) and tells me to restart my compute…

I installed service pack 3 and have noticed a weird problem-every time I put the computer on standby, it crashes every time I come back from standby mode. I used it all the time with SP2 with no problems whatsoever, but with SP3 when I come back from standby it crashes. Has anyone else had this problem? And if so, is there a fix?

Antivirus 2008 1 2
by Guest Alan C- 28 replies

One XPPro workstn was infected by the antivirus 2008 trojan, which I have managed to clean. One problem remains: I cannot browse any server (2003) shares via network places or explorer, although all mapped drives are accessible. When I try to browse to the server, - '\\our_srv\' only one share is shown - 'userdata' - and this appears as an empty folder. Z:\ is mapped to \\our_srv\userdata\username and lists all files, but in explorer that same path returns 'windows cannot find (path). check spelling....' I know that the trojan affects the local policies, which I've reset, but cannot find anything that would cause the above. Any help, suggestions, guidan…

Or whatever that one is called in Windows that is neccessary to keep to get updates. Anyways mine is empty for some reason and I don't know how it happened. So the other day i noticed my C;\drive had lost about 650megs of space and after poking around I found out that folder was full of kb folders about 650megs worth. I guess they were all a bunch of past updates I have installed but got re downloaded. Did the fact that that folder was empty have something to do with that. And can I fix it. I deleted all the folders becuse my computer is up to date and always has been.

"Insufficient system resources" messages
by Guest Robert S- 2 replies

Several times I have either received the above message - or "insufficient page file space". I've very rarely seen this in the past with XP which makes me think something's wrong. When I open up the task manager I get: Physical Memory (K) Total 523760 Available 185000 System cache 255084 Kernel memory 44396 Paged 30362 Nonpaged 14124 The Page File Usage History is running fairly constantly just over 50% When I open MS Word and Exploror the Page File Usage History runs at about 60% At the moment I'm running ESET Smart Security, Outlook Express and Firefox. Are these figures appropriate? What is the best way of debugging these problems?

by Guest _Who- 7 replies

Anyone know what SupportSoft software on my XP might be for? I know of their site but I've never purchased anything from them. In ProgramFiles there is a folder support.com which I'm guessing belongs to it. All the sub folders are empty except that bin has 3 .dll's It also appears in me Add or Remove Programs list. === A maybe related question: What is the name of the Roadrunner magic software? The dialog box use to pop up when my service was not good. I no longer need it but don't know where the file is. === I'm having trouble with the computer hanging on boot and like to get rid of anything I don't use - especially the services. Thank

booting
by Guest jeem- 3 replies

Need some direction here. My Dell XP (a few years old now) locked up last night while in a EA hockey game. I manually shut it down. When I started it up this morning it began the normal boot cycle and then went to chdisk. It fixed a few things (no idea what) and found orphaned file (same as before no idea what), and then it re-ran the same cycle restartign the boot up. It never starts, but reverts to the Dell screen and the xp screen over and over again. Is my PC dying or is there something I can do to get to my desktop again?
